Actually, I'm from Chicago, but I'm rarely there. My job keeps me away from home 5 days/week. Currently, I'm serving a three-month sentence (the customer is pretty bad) in Seattle.

The location on my blog changes depending on what city I'm in.

I can't believe you forgot 3rd Base either. No one ever remembers them when they talk about white rappers. They were easily the best white rappers until the emergence of Eminem. They had as much street cred as anyone at the time. They rep'ed NYC, were anti-Hammer and Vanilla Ice, and were part of the Native Tongue Family (Queen Latifa, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, etc.)

If I get a girl's number and I'm not interested (drunk at the time, tyring to be nice, whatever), I'm going to call in a few days and be friendly but non-commital.

When I was a full-time Chicagoan, I wouldn't date anyone outside the city limits. Transportation was an issue, but their was also a lifestyle difference. I'm an urban cat and prefer a vertical world. I like skyscrapers, steel and concrete. I like it going on 24/7. I love the crowds and chaos. I love going out to eat and hanging out in restaurants and bars and museums and...everything that makes a city a city. It seems anti-suburbs to me. And anyone who would live in a suburb probably is on a different page than I am. Experiments have borne this theory out so far.

BTW, I don't know the difference between Manhattan and the outer boroughs. I've only left Manhattan twice in my NYC visits.

Well, I agree with u that Python does more in less lines of code. At least in this case I think I cant reduce the code, unless I put everything in 1 line, but that would be completely horrible, lol. In your case u can reduce even more ur lines of code (ie all apples in 1 line), so I must respect that.

About OO, my code is following OO rules. Maybe it is strange because of the main() method inside the same Apple class, but that is not a problem, u can use the Apple as a normal object. The only difference is that it has a main() method. If u want, u can add main() in every class to do some tests or to have an example of how to use your classes. But u must remember that by convention the class that will run your application must be called 'MainClass'.

Quizás no sepan que para que salga un video, un artículo o lo que sea, "alguien" ha tenido que currar un ratito (o un ratazo) delante de un ordenador. Soy webmaster de varias webs y se lo que cuesta actualizar el contenido, reparar fallos, supervisar, hacer copias de seguridad, etc.. además, como bien dice Israel hay un tema que mucha gente pasa por alto y es el hosting. Hay que pagarlo y en el mejor de los casos sufrirlo... por eso me sorprende como alguien puede llegar a plantearse que algunas zonas de la web puedan ser de pago.

No estoy aquí para defender a nadie y menos al padre de greenshines, pero creo que TODOS deberíamos pensar y respetar las decisiones de este y otros web's que con su trabajo, van haciendo crecer Internet.

... y no me enrollo más. Esperaré a ver como va evolucionando el nuevo proyecto.

Hugo Heine cita acertadamente la existencia y el reconocimiento (desde hace muuucho tiempo por parte de las compañías de videojuegos) de epilepsias latentes no manifiestas hasta que se presenta el evento disparador de los síntomas. Claro que, ahora que él mismo lo menciona... yo me acuerdo bien que mi manual de mechwarrior 2 traía esa advertencia, pero los juegos mas recientes no lo incluyen (aclaro que hace rato no compro un juego original, quizá se deba a eso). ¿A que se deberá? A mi parecer, que una compañía ya no incluya eso en sus manuales es una putada... la única razón posible que se me ocurre para que hagan esto es que quieran llegar a ese pequeñísimo margen de personas con epilepsia latente, y esas sí son muchas ganas de hacer plata :-P

PCMan is great if you use Gnome. I never liked Nautilus and although they're improving it to become a little more lightweight, I still think it's bloated.
I don't use PCMan myself that much, because I'm running XFCE which has the excellent Thunar (otherwise I would).

Funny that a large proportion of idiots in Chile think that piropos are nice. And most of them are... women.

The Lonely Planet guide mentions somehting about foreign women not getting on with the local females. I just can't think of North-American/North European thinking that catcalling or wolf-whistling makes them feel 'good'.

The person who sent the letter is an American expat and it generates huge controversy. You wouldn't believe there was even a contest to choose the best piropos.

It is March now and I came back from Europe for some time, after 2 years away. The good thing is that upfront I'm prepared to expect shit. At Inmigración I handed my Chilean passport and that police piece of paper. And this was the dialogue:

Police woman: Where's your other paper?

(no Good morning nothing, just a woman with a rotweiller face)

Me: Sorry, what paper?

PW: The papee

Me: This one?

PW: No, the one you got when you left the country.

Me: Sorry ma'am, I left Chile 2 years ago, I don't recall any paper to get in again

PW: Yes, there's a paper, why you don't have it?!

Me: Alrigh... "Welcome to Chile" that is then

Me (pissed off): Sorry but I have traveled a number of occasions and this is the first time this happens, believe me not ven going to Europe I've been asked for a paper handed when I left-

SAG woman checks my rucksack, incidentallyit is a sports bag. She thoroughly checked it and having experienced being taken toxic French cheese and Spanish sausages, you know highly radioactive products, I brough just biscuits, teas and stuff. But this woman found a fucking old banana I had left in my sports bag after I went to the gym on Tuesday, and after I run I have a banana. This one ended at the bottom and to my horror it was shown to me right at the SAG control in SCL.

SAG: what does this mean?

Me: Looks like a banana

SAG: Show me your sworn declaration (again, no "please")

Me: here you go

SAG: But you say here you don't bring fruits

Me: I don't, what was by mistake, I didn´t realise

SAG: I had to fine you then

Me: WHAT!!!!!

SAG: yes, a fine, you're in breach of the regulations by bringing fruits

Me: No no, I'm sorry that's an old banana....

And I explained the whole story of the gym, my sports bag, potassium after running, etc.

I explained that by applying the law they are just being unjust. There's a criteria to enforce the law and that an old banana worth a few cents cannot justify a fine! I explained I didn't intend to lie, until a man came, apparently the supervisor, and he understood and let me in. He said "you're wrong but we can make an exception".

Amazingly, after he left and I was authrised to leave, the woman said I AM SORRY I HAVE TO FINE YOU!

I packed up my things and after fighting with some taxi drivers, I finally met my family.

All this to enter my OWN flippin' country!! What a great way to start my holidays.

Tomorrow my sister hs a job interview and she has to show a legal proof she's single, she was requested at the infamous "Notaría" two witnesses, not her relatives (just in case she went with my mum). She managed to convince two old folks waiting there to act as witnesses. How stupid is that?

How stupid is to ask for papers that if you don't have they just annoy you, don't they have a computer to check who has left? How ridiculous is that sense of stupidity and red paper and rudeness everywhere.

I've lived abroad for many years and horrible things have happened but I understand, it's not my country. When I see these things happening here, I get angry.

Marcelo, it is march, I have a lot of chilean friends, and people here are shit, no matter the time of the year.

If the Chilean economy is in jeopardy because of a smallish black old banana, man, this economy is sad. At least fine people and make the money go to charity. My point is that I was neither bringing foreign produce into the country, or worse, smuggling bananas. It was the one old banana, cannot justify one UTM fine (over 40 lucas).

For a beer and chill out is even worse mate. You go to the bar, order your stuff, go to the cashier, pay, get a receipt, go back to the bar tender.

I actually had a stomach bug (welcome to Chile again) and I had forgotten how great it is to order, pay, and collect your medicine from three different people: Chilean efficiency.

Mamacita complains over Chilean women. It is nearly impossible to have an insightful interesting conversation with a Chilean woman, or at least for more that 3 minutes. I have met so many gringas and they always have something interesting to say, and in some cases even something boring to say, but at least "something" to say. I just can't cope with the average chilean girl cheesy music habits, oh man how can they possibly enjoy that awful music. Well, that's one of many things. The most infuriating one is by far the inability to live abroad without complaining over absoutely everything and the ridiculous jealousy and control-freak obssesives.

I know I sound awful, but I now have a French girlfriend and for once I know what it is going out for drinks with my mates without that typically Chilean manipulative make-you-feel-guilty attitude, rather than "you're drunk again I'm sick of you", not something you hear from the British or Irish, who are as drunk as men and nobody makes a fuss about it.

I hate giving advice but you gringas are too honest, it just doesn't go down very well here. You have to learn the manipulative two-faced over-sentimental ways of the girls here if you want to fit in. If you're talkative, that will make you the odd one out. And if on top of things you're blonde, I wish you good luck, cos you will need it.

But the most interesting and bizarre thing is how shocking it is for women to be trated as equals here. There's this sort of feminist wave going on now. But for a man to trat women like equals means one is boring and cold, or "weirdo", which now I take it as a compliment.

In the end I made good friends of the fw of my female friends who managed a while abroad, and even married gringos, so lately even the "snooty" adjective has been added to the list.

Oh, and about the beer, this is one thing different for Americans (their unreal laws on selling alcohol), but the North European gringas, that's fun to have a drinking session.

But don't try coffee either, the girls here all suffer colon irritable, but if they don't, they wouldn't like the taste of coffee either.

Is she peruvian or chilean? Chileans even love the peruvian nanas, they can teach children to speak in that soft and well enunciated peruvian accent, and they cook delicious stuff. Let alone how hard they work.

In America people work flipping burgers and although the income is higher, comparatively the gap is less striking (although they are still better off) that this odd jobs in Chile.

In a way it makes a good way to share wealth in the country, by giving hand in cash to people willing to work. If the workers are treated humanely there shouldn't be a reason to feel "bad" about it. I think a lot of people are aware of it and feels the same, but think about it: what if there were too many restrictions and regulations on these jobs? Poverty would be even worse.

Hiya, funny cos I was there on Tuesday night last week and it was packed! The service was very friendly but really slow. I don't know if the same happened to you but it took forever to get the change after we paid the bill, so in the end we jut left, leaving a tip. Cheeky bastards.

The italian selection of cured meats was good but rather expensive. Can't they just get Chilean stuff, more affordable? Some of those silly girls from TV were around. The really snobbish celebrities live around the Bellas Artes/Parque Forestal area (Nicole one of them, if you don't know her don't worry cos nobody does but me). For them the Barrio Alto is so passé. Well, it is soulless.

And about the 80s music, I have a theory. We were robbed that decade, so now we want it back. Even worse, the government sort of encouraged English music so people wouldn't understand a thing, and that was better than protest songs. For the government 'Sweet dreams (are made of this, hehe)' was better than Adiós general. So listening to 80s classics brings back memories of those days but now finally we're living a little. It's just the nostalgia. Although I'm 31 now and the 80s weren't quite my teenage years, I do have some vivid memories and I can see why people like it.

Santiago is certainly not Baghdad. But for a few years it may be enjoyable. It's an isolated place so people are insular, although they think of themselves as nice and friendly. That can be quite odd.

Chileans need to be in touch and engage with other cultures, so I'm actually encouraging people to move to Chile, but because I think it's good for the country. In Chile, you can have a priest preaching during the main news programme and people don't complain about it: they actually think it's a great thing.

For people in engineering or commerce, it's good, think of Chile as a developing nation and those skills are in high demand. For the rest, you should be prepared to be worse off than in North America or Europe. For students it may be defintely good, as in fun and parties.

Things like a dishwasher or central heating are still regarded as a luxury. That gives you a glimpse of what to expect.

I have lived in big cities with so many foreigners that in the end nobody could care less where I came from. But in Chile you will always be singled out as the foreigner, and being Chile so homogeneous, you may be feel you just don't belong. Chileans speak Spanish with their own tilt and flavour, and it's a sort of bizarre dialect, so if your Spanish is 'good', it'll take you a while to get used to it.

My girlfriend is French and she didn't like the country, and I fear 'didn't like it' is a bit of an understatement.

All in all, Chile is OK but for a couple of years only.

It's so funny to see how much people miss silly things like candy. Same here. Being away I just die for leche cultivada, I like it with instant oats (avena instantánea). Yeah, I know it sounds gross, great and convenient after the gym.

But, amazingly, once I was sent so many pots of manjar (the massive ones) and I had it with toast for weeks and weeks, but in the end I got sick of it. I eventually switched to Nutella (before I thought it was fake manjar).

Although you're not gonna change anything and it's not like the piropero is gonna ever think "oh, someone told me off, so I better stop doing this".

It is a sad part of our (lack of) culture.

Someone has got to take on those idiots.

Now, it bothers you, imagine how it feels when someone does all this to a guy's girlfriend with him next to her. It has happened to me, and to many, and it's common. It happened to me quite a few times with my French girlfriend who is totally foreign looking which I even think put some people off (I think most men usually prefer wolf-whistling at the typical Chilean hottie type, but perhaps I'm wrong here).

This is so sickening that once even some fucking cops said things to my then Chilean girlfriend. I remember it vividly cos it was quite a scene (the "pacos culiaos" part from me -predictably- did not make their day and didn't help too much my relationship).

A met up with a French friend once in Santiago and same happened to her, by one of the pacos of La Moneda. That was just the last straw.

This idiotic behaviour has got to change and Chilean women would never ever retaliate, so if you do it, be aware you'll be the first one ever, and people around you are gonna think you're a witch, or you're having a bad day or simply you're mad not 'enjoying it'.

I can only say that I totally (and respectfully) disagree with Fned. And I fully agree with Emily:

What's this thing about talking to strangers with no reason?? If someone needs directions, help, etc, then go ahead and talk to others. But if not, why can't people mind their own flippin' business?!

I have told off so many guys: "chucha que andai caliente weon", is my favourite. I make sure I smile and that I make them feel we're cool. Of course, I'm not, and I just mean to bother them.

Two idiots sat opposite them, and started staring at them for at least 15 solid minutes, with a pethetic face like "wow, I'm gorgeous, you're gorgeous... let's get together" sort-of-thing.

My friend couldn't take it anymore and she just said somehting like "enough is enough".

The German girls opened their map and after a while they left. The two guys followed them! Pathetic.

I mean it's OK when you go to a pub and make eye contact. For a man, if it is blatantly obvious he's only getting the "I'm not interested" face, it's time to drop it.

Chilean men think that a woman on her own, or two women, having a coffee or whatever, is a sad thing or they are necessarily looking for male company. It is OK for Chileans to bother other people, invade their space or approach others to show their ignorance or that they are some pathetic version of Neruda (the "of beautiful eyes of my sweet angel" type, I hate it more that the downright obscene words). Making remarks about anyone is, apparently, acceptable. They just don't get it that a woman on the public transport or on the street may not be in the mood to hear any feedback on her appearance. But you have surely noted that people can say anything to anyone.

Chilean just wouldn't realise it's stupid and they make fools of themselves. So if you start off this retaliation campaign, it's pretty much yourself against everyone else.

But do it. Just throw an enraged look at them, that would do. No point in starting an argument. Although you can be certain they're gonna say "oh sweetheart you don't look like an angel anymore..." etc.

You're not gonna believe this. My sister asked me on MSN if I was going to watch the game. I said no, no point, they are too lazy and I couldn't be bothered. I woke up at night dreaming I was watching the game with one of my best mates (he's built up his whole life around football). I fel asleep immediately.

Then in the morning, I turned on the computer first thing. I woke up at the time they scored. I don't believe in anything supernatural or in the unexplained, but today has been the most bizarre ever.

BTW, I met the footballers in their hotel in Dublin, after they beat Ireland. They were great and had all the time for the fans. Chatting and joking, I told them that Leeson St was the place to go (I explained to them what a 'meat market' is, dunno if you use that word in America). When I saw the Irish papers and the Chileans on the Dublinazo (an drunken incident with women in the hotel) I had a similar moment. They did go to Leeson St, and I'm only too happy now that Mark Gonzalez is back in the national team.

Great post Kyle, this has been truly historic because at the end of the day, we totally love the Argentinians and their football is one of the world's finest, so this was just great.

Just one question: how come the US women team is so good?

Hi Kyle, I don't mean to sound patronising but I've done a few races myself and one full marathon (26,2M/42 KM), and just a few tips:

As I read in one great book, 'you want to start slowly, and after that you run even slower'. This is not a sprint, this is long distance.

Also, if you did your homework, you shouldn't be worried. If you have done the right training, you should feel confident. If you didn't do your proper training, cancel.

I see you have done your preparation, so don't worry!

If you have an iPod, make sure you get the music right.

Needless to say, have a good pasta dinner the night before, and porridge for breakfast that day.

It is too late now so you just have to rest, so no more training. Running is finished now.

I don't know why some people hate sports drinks. They are great. Have one, you need them, and an energy bar in your pocket.

This post and the comments have been quite interesting.

Reading your blog I have noticed that some Chileans take offense when confronted with the stark reality: Chile is shit.

Having said that, Chile is not the only shitty country of the world. I couldn't agree more with the great contemporary thinker and philospher Noel Gallagher (warning: strong language):

"I miss watching the football, I miss getting a decent cup of tea. That's about it, other than that I don't miss anything."

"You know England is not that fucking great, as anybody'll tell you. To live in England is a fucking shithole, to be honest. Well, look at it, fucking dump!"

Just replace "England" and "London" with "Chile" and "Santiago", and you'll know what I feel about Chile. Although there are differences: there are less tourists in Chile, and football is crap. I miss the Selección matches and la UC. There's nothing special about it. One italian girl I met a few weeks ago was telling me how much she loves Neruda and Isabel Allende, she even described Chile as the country with the most beautiful literature of the world. OK, I just hope she never visits Chile.

But other than that, I agree with what people are saying about Santiaguinos being kinda rude.

Psicométodos though got one thing wrong. Are French people rude? No way Jose. If anything, they're irritatingly polite. So I think there's a reason for the Santiago rudeness, and it's because in Chile (in Santiago, whatever) we perceive 'fake' as something really bad. It's preferable to be rude than --god forbid-- fake. So nobody cares really if you're pushed. It goes withoout saying that nobody meant to push you or cause physical harm to you. So what's the point in apologising? If you don't mean it, then don't do it. If I can, I would. But most likely I wouldn't realise.

I say that because I don't feel offended when people push me to get on the Metro train (imagine the Tokyo metro). We're all equally rushed and stressed out. You're gonna get pushed. The attitude is "f** it, live with it". Actually, it's been the same ever since I was going to school, so I really think nothing of it.

And by the way, Gabriel Monty, well I'm sorry I wasn't born in a wonderful place where I could see the beautiful green praire every morning and walk happily to school every day, smiling and playing sorrounded by nature. You hate Santiago 'mainly for its people'? You've got to be flippin' joking, but if you mean it then I recommend you seek help.

I remember once I went to buy the newspaper in France. "Good morning monsieur", "it's €1,50 monsiuer", "bon journée monsieur, merci". All that just to get the paper. Of course her face was saying something different. But you see my point. Once to see a football match the guard checking tickets was saying 'bon match' to people. They wish you a good day for everything. They thank you more than twice when buying anything. But you can't tell 'tu' to people, you use 'vous' (usted). So I told my girlfriend that it was a bit much. It was not politeness anymore, it was the ultimate fake. So whoever said the French are rude is someone who is being economical with the truth (to put it mildly). They're uptight and excessively polite.

Rancagua is round the corner from Santiago. I would rather live in Beirut or Bagdad than Rancagua. Valparaíso is nice, granted. But the rest? What region is Gabriel from?

@Psicométodos: I ran a race in France a few years ago. When I went to register, the guy noticed my accent and asked me where I came from. "Oh Chili", he said. He asked me a few questions, just when I was about to hand over the money, he told me "oh no, please, this is on us". He went on to tell me he felt honoured that a Chilean was running, and that I made the race more international. This is just one of many, many examples of people being great to me. Some may have been arseholes, but I can't even remember.

So I suspect you're just repeating and perpetuating a silly stereotype, and surely you're not speaking from experience.

@Gabriel: The difference between you and me is that you have said horrible things and insulted all santiaguinos, and I'm just not taking any of that. So, you hate Santiago mainly because of the people, but amazingly it’s me the one who incite contempt from others (although I was at the receiving end of your hatred), then you single me out for being posh (I'm not, and if I was posh, what's the big deal?, don't you know that classism works both wayss?) Then you call me I'm an ignorant and I don't know the 'beautiful ways of life outside the big city', and -shockingly- it's me the condescending part here.

Let me tell you one thing. I believe Santiago is a shithole. I mean there are things I like, the Bellas Artes museum, the Parque Forestal, some of the architecture, some parts are really nice no sane person can deny it. But I still find there's not enough culture, I'd like more Cine Normandies, more cafés La Rosa, and more Mosqueto streets, more Bellavistas, that sort of thing.

Now, I really don't know if I should laugh or what, but one of the biggest stereotypes of the provincianos (don't take is as an offense please, it's just a word and not necessarily a derogative one) is that they are naive. When I referred to Noel Gallagher as a great philosopher and thinker I was obviously being sarcastic. The guy has admitted himself to never read books. He's not articulate. He's known for being an arrogant git. How can you not get it!? And let's not go into the Bagdad/Beirut comparison with Rancagua, seriously, you don't understand sarcasm? Tip: when you come to horrible rude and polluted Santiago, please don't give money to anyone claiming he owns the Santa Lucía. He's just trying to steal your money. He's not the owner so he can't sell it to you. Well, it is a very old joke, but looks like I you need this piece of advice.

Most people have a skewed views of Santiago just cause they watch the news and everything is robbery, violence, murders and crime. People believe that Santiaguinos are either posh or yobs, as if there was nothing in between. I think you’re victim of all these sensationalist news programmes so your opinions have really little value.

My main criticism against Santiago is that it's just not cosmopolitan enough. And there are reasons why I don’t like it that much. You surely know the song 'Por qué no te vas' by Los Prisioneros. Well, I am one of those that 'dream of New York and Europe, I complain about our culture and our people, and I complain that the indians don't appreciate art', and even more annoyingly: 'I'm always talking about the movies in the Normandie'.

In the provinces, other than binge-drinking, I fail to see what's so appealing. I went to Punta Arenas, it was cold and windy, ugly. No idea what they find so beautiful in Patagonia. In the rest of the country I'm sure there are as many drunks and wife-beaters as in Santiago, so don’t make me believe in this dichotomy (I like big words) of Santiago=ugly vs Province=innocence and beauty.

About Valparaíso, well let me tell you I traveled quite a bit with my girlfriend and we used the French Tourist guide, the world famous Routard. Do me a favour and read it, you'll see what I mean. As a country, Chile is fucking shit. There's very little to see compared to the wonders of Inca culture in Peru or Bolivia, or the amazing natural wonders of Brazil, or the real beauty of Buenos Aires, among other fantastic attractions and all other countries (two French friends traveled all around Latin America, Chile included, they were unimpressed and they just loved Ecuador). Cities like Rancagua, Talca or Antofagasta weren't even mentioned in the guide. Restaurants in most places in Chile are rubbish. Food is disgusting, Chileans simply lack of creativity to cook. Chileans came up with ten dishes at the most: salmon with some non-descript salad, barbecued beef and potatoes, seafood (that most Chileans don't even eat) and that's it. Seriously, eating in Chile is a disaster. Nobody would ever complain over bad Peruvian food, but the arrogant chileans think that Peru is crap, although that country has an extraordinary cuisine. Chileans love when foreigners tell them their piece of shit is a great country but to be perfectly honest, and being myself Chilean, I can testify that the reality is that Chile is a shitty country. The landscape is not even nice: the south is rainy, grey and cold, and now mostly devastated, and the north is just plain ugly desert. The beach is cold and filthy, you're lucky if you get 3 sunny days in a row, and the girls are ugly and wouldn't even sunbathe in topless (becasue the chileans, who are notoriously ugly apart from chauvinist, normally act as if they have never seen a woman).

But the worse part is the people, metropolitan and provincial. People are not even honest. Just cause the saw me with a foreign woman they assume is OK for us to be ripped off. And because my girlfriend doesn't speak much Spanish, they would even think that yours truly was foreign. I was treated like shit. In some places my gf had to pay more, isn’t that discrimination? Service everywhere is appalling. In Puerto Montt one guy was really nice to us during a tour. At one point he told me that nobody speaks to the Peruvians cause they’re filthy. So much for yourself drinking mate with the nice baqueanos.

Your attitude towards Valparaíso is downright idiotic. It is, if anything, the only interesting place. Don’t be fooled into thinking it is extraordinary, because it’s not, it is muck. But they made it colourful, and it’s full of character. There’s no place like Valparaíso anywhere in the world. No chance in hell I would live there, but it is amazing in its own way.

Don't get me wrong. I don't praise Santiago. I have fantastic memories about the city and some things are great. I have been happy in Santiago. But in general is crap, like the rest of the country, so I pretty much agree with Noel Gallagher with his view of his own country.

Chile is a dusty shithole, with no culture, few museums, food is abominable and the weather is either too hot or too cold. Chileans are narrow-minded philistine chauvinist arseholes.

It can all change, and I’m sure it will. But we can only improve our own condition once we assume the reality. Any chance of reform depends on people’s ability to recognize that in 200 years of history we have built a crappy country. We're just doing harm to ourselves if we keep comparing with Cuba and the likes.

@Anonymous: I met once a Chilean friend of mine and her husband (a Londoner) in Liverpool. We opened a map in the city centre, one guy came out of the blue to give us directions. Same thing with my gf once in Manchester. What I mean is that people in the north are known for being tough but there's something polite and nice about them. In the south of Chile people are kind of nice but are really shy. You can open a map and nobody's gonna help you.

England, or Britain actually, was in the past a world power and ruled the world. Today, if my dog is not in the backyard the British may rule my backyard. Today they rule nothing and it shows. It's a country with a long and important history, in that sense only rivaled by France.

Chile for long has been a backward place, we haven't given anything remarkable to the world, apart from some notable writers and a few artists, but nothing that has happened in Chile has had any impact anywhere. So I cannot really compare both.

Something I found really really impressive was the British Museum. Needless to say, some of the world heritage is safely stored there, and free access to the public. But equally nice was the museums I saw in Manchester or Liverpool, with all the history of the working class during the 19th century and the Industrial Revolution, stuff like that.

I just don't see anything interesting in the rest of Chile. The hiking trails in Patagonia are great, but mainly Chile's attractions are not man made, they are simply natural wonders, and not always that impressive as the Chileans think.

Perhaps I'm biased. History is one of my hobbies, so I tend to like countries with history. Chile is a newish country, and I think it is stupid the way chileans show contempt for their own history. So to sum up, England (Britain) has given great scientits, thinkers, musicians and has influenced and even shaped the world. And I see they want to preserve history, and Chile doesn't have any of that.

About similarities, there's something miserable about Chileans and British, I mean about the way they live. Both share a negative outlook on life.

In France I went to a rock concert people were queing to order a drink. People go back home quietly. In Britan and in Chile the alcohol-fueled culture and binge drinking is revolting. Fights after a night out are frightening, and everywhere. I don't know exactly what it is but looks like both people can't have fun unless they get pissed. I have seen women puking in the street and falling on their own pool of sick. We celebrate 18th of September in Chile the same way, and we're so pathetic we think it is great. I have been to so many St Patrick's celebrations and I'm done with them.

The food in England is a disgrace, but the international restaurants are fantastic, especially Indian. In Chile we have a bbq, which is no rocket science. And that's about it. Some restaurants now are good and less pricey, but unfortunately eating out is still expensive for the majority of people. In provinces, no offense, there's nothing. While in England you still find great places out of London, and obviously because it's a country with higher disposable income. No need to explain about eating in France, which is something that changed me forever. And I don't mean posh Michelin-starred restaurants, I mean a small bistrot anywhere in France can give you fucking great food, and I mean it could be just the ultimate fucking great culinary experience. In England and Chile you just don't find any of this.

Having a sandwich at your desk in England and Chile is normal. I just realised that we eat like barbarians.

Apart from history, and related to it, I like painting. Somehow, in Chile you have to be very careful to whom you mention this otherwise you come across as an arrogant pretentious twat. And the same with the British. There's a lot of inbelievably idotic people, the sort of tabloid readers. There's a strong and pervasive celebrity culture, and in Chile is a new trend and is getting stronger.

Oh, and new, recent similarity now: cops are equally brutal.

Anonymous: the bbq culture is rooted in Chile and being vegeterian is really odd. But then again, Argentina has a similar bbq culture and as far as I can see, most vegeterians have a wide variety of options there. It is a very anglo-saxon thing to be vegeterian, perhaps related to the mad cow disease and foot&mouth outbreakes etc. Of all French friends of my gf, and her family, I've not met a single vegetarian yet.

I know I keep comparing countries to France but I find it useful for comparison. For me is the second country I know best.

The binge-drinking in Chile is, on top of it, related to complete drink and drive irresponsibility. You tell Chileans about a designated driver and things like that and they laugh.

@Psycho-metódos: The difference is that I'm intelligent enough to tell if a given individual is an idiot or not, and I don't take it from there to call everyone else an idiot in that specific country. Even though the French have no problems with the Spanish or any other country, if I see one insulting them, I won't be so silly to think that all people are like that. Not even the majority. What you're doing is known as 'generalisation', to draw a conclusion from specific cases for more general cases. But in your case your generalisation is flawed, and so it is a hideous generalisation.

I can say that Chileans are football-crazed people because I have met many football-crazed people. That's alright. I have met many, many Chileans who think the Peruvians are like the untouchables, so I can say that most Chileans still don't know how to treat people from other countries and are usually driven by stereotypes, and they are a fairly racist country. This is a correct generalisation.

Yes I was speaking from my own experience, and so because generally I'm reasonably polite to people I have not been mistreated. Try and understand this.

Ask yourself why you found so many rude and ignorant people. Maybe cause you drove them up the wall? Perhaps you're like one of those Chileans who get all homesick and annoyed because they can't eat empanadas and can't drink pisco. And no, there's no cazuela either. And by the way, don't put mayonaise on that weón.

Certainly, the French are not overtly welcoming, they are not warm people, they don't make friends easily. But I really think you're wrong, and unfair. You're confusing the Gallic froideur with racism. You're insulting a lot of people with such statements.

As an ocean-going sailboat owner, this string of criticism certainly seems a bit harsh. Sort of like criticising handbags made of recycle bottles because we were already weaving baskets from jute five thousand years ago. The future of windpower is probably limited to the extent that (in Europe anyway) the availability of sites for windparks is severely restricted. Germany, for example, the world leader, will not be building any more and France is only a few years off. Solar, on the other hand, holds more promise because it can be used in smaller applications and this boat is a good example of how that technology can be exploited. I, for one, salute Treehugger for posting this article.

I found this post quite helpful if a bit disturbing. Is there any chance that Dasani et al have some special filtering system? Any chance they are kicking back to Detroit to help them improve their public water? Probably not. I, for one, would find it quite fantastic if the municipal water cos would trumpet this fact and go into the market themselves, thereby giving other municpal water cos the idea to make a buck on the side too.

There really are no filtration breakthoughs in public water systems. Public water systems must meet EPA recommended maximum contaminant levels, so users are not exposed to too much fluoride, radon, arsenic, selenium etc etc. In recommending the levels EPA looks at all forms of exposure, not just drinking. Showering, cooking are key.

When it comes to pathogens, meeting safe levels at end of pipe calls for addition of chlorine, chlor-amines, or ozone/UV light. Chloramines are cheaper to maintain at adequate levels at distance from the treatment plants, but have the drawback of tasting bad.

The services performed by bottlers include adding dissolved mineral salts to improve flavor, filtering out chlorine and other organic off-flavors, and of course ensuring that the water remains sterile once bottled - much like the canning of food. Don't forget that they are putting their product in plastic that leaches some constituents back into the water over time.

A person who starts out with decent tasting tap water can easily filter out the any organic compounds and chlorine, matching the quality of bottled water. However, if your tap water is extremely hard, no amount of filtration will make an improvement.

Concuerdo contigo, muchas personas ven en los insultos y groserias una salida facil a la falta de argumentos al debatir. La gracia del debate es poder plasmas nuestro punto de vista ante un tema determinado, pero si uno no tiene una opinion en algo hay que parar mirar los puntos de las otras personas, informarse mas y ahi crear una opinion seria y bien fundamentada.
Creo que en ninguna parte uno esta libre de leer cosas asi, entonces hay que dejarlos ser y poco a poco ese lenguaje ira desapareciendo.

Mi opinion al capitulo de eliminación:
Ciertamente las pruebas son diseñadas para proteger a aquellos personajes que de una u otra manera fortalecen el programa. Recordemos en 1810 la primera prueba que tuvo Pamela Leiva.
Lo que no deja de llamarme la antencion es toda la espectacion generaba el programa con el ya sabido abandono de Foxley, dia en el cual curiosamente muere Elisa. No estara algo arreglado esto?

Ahora a esperar como fortalecen el vacio que dejo Foxley?

Pero la gracia de los realitys es contar con gente cuyas personalidades sean bien definidas y asi poder una historia atractiva (recordemos que aunque no sean pauteados los integrantes, las situaciones que el programa plantea son para ver sus reacciones)
Pero como dice "alej", los nombres que planteas son bien poco atractivos:
Hereveri: en Peloton 2 era casi como un Mario Larrain
Ocaranza: despues de su accidente no creo que se someta a pruebas de gran esfuerzo fisico.
Hotuiti: Esta con todo lo ocurrido en Yingo hace dias.

Creo que mas que buscar gente deberian permitir a los lesionados solo 2 semanas de reposo, si la lesion requiere un mayor plazo, estos deberian abandonar la base pues es injusto para los demas.

No encuentro que NORALEG este haciendo algo malo incentivando una votacion si es el mismo reality y la trama la que nos hace tomar uno u otro bando. Es lo mas logico.

La proxima prueba al parecer sera "Rafting" pues hoy en Pelotón PM el instructor les enseñaba las maniobras que se ocupaban sobre la balsa.

No creo que sea tanto como para tratarlo asi, Mariela no se lo hizo saber y Pablo cayo en el error que la mayoria de los hombres caemos, al no entender un cambio de animo repentino y escuchar "estoy bien" .... creemos que todo esta bien.
Pero el problema que se pueda generar por eso es asunto de ellos 2, creo que el que actuo realmente feo es Francisco Schilling al decirle al go como "la mamá tenia razon" o "te dije lo que pensa la mamá", aca la familia no tiene pito que tocar, la familia esta para apoyar y no para pre-juzgar a personas.
Y lo de Angie, me cae bien pero encuentro que fue muy exagerado eso de "no siento las piernas".

First of all my sincere condolences to the family of Lindsay...I'm Peruvian, I'm American, I've a girl that's 18 years old. Most of immigrants have great respect for our laws. We are also humans and sometimes we broke the laws. I do not want to excuse the acts of a young woman that drove under the influence, but I have to agree with those who point to the fact that the deceased was very aware that they were drinking and driving. I'm sure those moments before the tragedy they were hugging and enjoying their friendship in the wrong way. Was Lindsay also intoxicated? If that was the case they all share the guilt of their irresponsibility. If Lindsay were alive, or, if she is looking from above all these, I'm sure that she'll ask for forgiveness for her friend. If Ms. Mezzich happened to died at that accident, would that have been enough to get the deserved grievance to the mother?...

So, say I document enough for a level 3, but the patient issues are not truly complex? (COPD, improving, DM uncontrolled but not wildy so, nausea, etc) can I still bill level 3? also, even if I document 99232 and then the complexity is even less? I.E. DVT staying in house till INR theraputic? or chronic panreatitis, here for pain meds (like always), probably doesn't really have pancreatitis, planning on kicking them out tomorrow? no change in therapy? (already on oral meds?)still on IV? or Off IV? either way! please help!?

Have you ever seen the Neverwhere miniseries? In the DVD version, there is an interview with Gaiman where he describes how the miniseries was written first. (The miniseries itself is enjoyable enough, though it suffers from some of the same problems as the novel.)

Gaiman is a decent storyteller, but innovation and edginess are definitely not among his strengths. Even the Sandman series, which is some of his strongest work, is a lot tamer than that of Miller and Moore, who also contributed to bringing a more adult sensibility/reputation to comics.

Como bien dices, clásicos como Caperucita Roja o Pinocho no encuadran en este sistema.
Este generador me parece muy obvio y esquematizador de historias porque siempre tendrás el mismo rollo y desenlace.

Siempre me han parecido originales los cuentos de los Hnos. Grimm que al menos te dejan una moraleja.

Por cierto, en ningún punto ví a las hadas hacer su trabajo ;)

...me has lecho recordar algo que leí hace un tiempo y tiene grandes físicos contemporáneos apuntalándola, la Teoría del Punto Omega según la cual luego de que gobiernen las máquinas, la IA, SE APAGARÁ la vida tal cual la conocemos y se reiniciará un super computador autosustentable en el cual previamente estarán todos nuestros datos, identidades, historia de la humanidad creado por los hombres con este fin. Supuestamente resucitaremos todos, TODOS los seres humanos en millones de años gracias a un Dios(léase super ordenador),pero yo me pregunto...qué pasará cuando resucite uno de nosotros y vea que nuestra esposa, pareja se volvió a casar?...o si un muerto se encuentra con su asesino?...millones de judíos que harían al ver a Hitler??
Me impactó. Seguí investigando y encontré que pues no pasaría nada, además, por lo que creo recordar, se decía algo así en la teoría como que resucitaremos convertidos en seres informáticos la mar de pacíficos.

Chévere debate, me lo leí completo...y aunque les otorgo razón a todos con sus puntos de vista, me quedo con el último comment de Silvi: "Es una cuestión generacional y cultural".

Por ejemplo yo me quedé en los 80's y gutural para mi en esa época era Ted Nugent pero guardaba armonía. En mi caso nada mejor que INXS, The Clash, Twisted Sisters, AC/DC, Bob Dylan o los Rolling Stones.
Repito, influye mucho lo generacional o cultural. Por ejemplo, en mi grupo de amigos no había rockeros ni metaleros, solo escuchabamos lo que nos era estéticamente agradable y digerible, lo de las farras o dedicables a una chica.

Adoro a Fleetwood Mac, ELO, ZZTop, The Cure y otros que para alguno de ustedes pueden ser muy simples o pasados de moda. Para mi nunca pasarán porque lo mágico de la música considero yo son los recuerdos que te pueden evocar cual perfume a tu olfato, y recuerdos, al igual que todo el mundo, tengo excelentes.
De hecho uno solo escucha lo que le gusta, no?

Les abrí las puertas porque necesitaba una respuesta. Una cosa es contartelo aquí y otra lo que yo sentía. En fin, te lo resumo. Decidí recibirlos 2 veces por semana durante 4 meses creo.
Fue enriquecedor en cuanto a cultura general y porque quienes me visitaban eran unos tipos muy cultos.
Hablábamos sobre la decodificación del ADN, de steem cells, Darwin, etc.
Yo no soy necio, pero cuando te argumento lo hago fehacientemente y a pruebas me remito, ellos lo hacían también.
Concluí que son interpretaciones de la Biblia, de ‘su’ biblia que no es la versión occidentalizada de Reina de Valera, es otra traducción de los mismos manuscritos, quhe dicho sea de paso, tiene puntos interesantísimos, pero que los seguidores ‘inmediatos’ de Rusell distorsionaron. Hasta cierto punto Rusell era un estudioso de manuscritos. Las exageraciones vinieron luego de su muerte porque de quienes quedaban como cabezas quien decía mayores disparates o asustaba más a la congregación llevaba más adeptos.
De hecho pude conocer que dentro de los mismos Testigos hay una línea más radical, tipo los ‘sedevacantistas católicos’.
Lo increíble y al mismo tiempo la razón de tanta publicación científica que tienen es por la cantidad de científicos y profesionales T de J que han reclutado. Profesionales de 1er nivel. De hecho los temas darvinianos o del aborto tratados en sus revistas no le piden favor a las Selecciones de Reader Digest o a publicaciones médicas especializadas.

Cuando mi interés por ellos decayó y supe lo que quería les pedí cordialmente dejaran de venir a casa.
Algo que nunca entenderé es que pueden ver a su madre o hijo morir y ellos no permiten se les transfusione sangre. De hecho los colegios de médicos y legislaciones del mundo respetan esa decisión.

Creo yo, mi percepción es que son una minoría inteligente a la que han lavado elcerebro.
Imagínate que tienen en USA a científicos T de J trabajando en un plasma que pronto reemplazará la sangre humana, lo cual beneficiará a todos no?
Algo con mucho fundamento ees que los romanos no crucificaban, los empalaban en un solo tronco, esto lo demuestran hallazgos arqueológicos. Uff, si te contara, super interesante.
Bueno, luego de eso volví a mi ateísmo (de hecho nunca lo dejé) crónico hasta hace poco que ando en otra onda que algún día les he de contar ;)

Me hiciste recordar con cariño una etapa dura, en la que aunque no compartí sus ideas, al menos me entretuvieron!

Silvi, es sumamente doloroso el caso palestino. La ONU entrega a los judíos una porción de tierra a sabiendas que era poblada por árabes palestinos. A sabiendas que religiosamente tienen diferencias irreconciliables en cuanto a la concepción de su dios.

La ONU generó este problema endosado por los británicos que tenían gran influencia y dominio en territorio palestino, del cual se retiró cediendo a los árabes el 46% y a los judíos el 54%después de la 2da guerra.
Los judíos aceptan el plan a pesar de no estar de acuerdo con los términos pero los árabes lo rechazaron.

En mayo de 1948 expiró el Mandato británico de Palestina. Recién ahí, los judíos proclamaron la independencia del Estado de Israel en su parte del territorio otorgada por el Plan de Partición de la ONU. Esta declaración provocó como reacción inmediata la invasión de los ejércitos de la alianza árabe iniciando así la guerra árabe-israelí de 1948.
Al día siguiente de la declaración de Israel como estado, los 5 países árabes vecinos -Jordania, Libano, Egipto, Irak y siria- les declararon la guerra.

Esta guerra duro como un año y los israelítas les diero duro a los 5 y se anexionaron más territorio que el que les dio la ONU. Tal como Chile le quitó salida al mar a Bolivia en la Guerra del Pacífico. Fue un caso parecido.

Esta guerra provocó miles de desplazados en ambos sentidos: árabes de la zona israelí fueron obligados a desplazarse a las vecinas de Gaza y Cisjordania dando origen al problema que hoy perdura de los refugiados palestinos.

Desde entonces Egipto a atacado a Israel en la guerra de Suez en el año 50 creo y luego en los 60’s en la guerra de los 6 días aliándose con Siria. En ambas triunfó Israel.
Luego tienes la Guerra del Ramadán, la Guerra del Líbano y las Intifadas en que se ha aliado el mundo árabe contra Israel.

Israel es un estado que ha vivído en guerra desde el día siguiente de su creación. Que lleva un trauma histórico del holocausto.

¿Qué culpa tiene el que lehayan asignado esa porción de tierra para vivir con tales vecinos fanáticos y radicales?
¿te imaginas el vivir con el corazón en la boca sabiendo que tus hijos van a la escuela y no saber si hoy a un loco no le dio por inmolarse junto a tus niños por ser judíos?
Pongamonos un rato en sus zapatos.

No justifico la masacre a los palestinos pero entiendo que TODO el mundo tiene libre derecho a la defensa.

Silvi, es normal que haya gente que solo vean las masacres israelies, es normal que sean ciegos cuando les convienen, como gente que tampoco no dice nada por las 80 mil muertes que le han costado a Colombia las FARC desde su creación en 1964. Gente que justifica los bombazos de ETA donde solo su cúpula quiere separarse de España y norte de Francia, el pueblo vasco no lo desea.
Es normal olvidarse del holocausto más terrible de la historia, 12 millones de ucranianos muertos en un año por Stalin en Holdomor http://sentado-frente-al-mundo.blogspot.com/200... también debemos enseñar si ejercemos docencia para que no se vuelvan a repetir estas cicatrices de la historia. Reitero tus palabras, debemos tomar partido, yo ya lo hice hace rato pero no escribo nunca ni converso sobre ello porque prefiero guardar las amistades sean de la tendencia que sean.
¿Por qué no exigimos a la ONU intervenga en Corea del Norte para reestablecer las libertades civiles, Zimbawe o en salvar a los tibetanos masacrados?
Es fácil leer a Stalin, ser afines a Santiago Carrillo o Eduardo Galeano pero no pedimos a la ONU interceda por los miles de presos y perseguidos políticos del castrismo y chavismo.

Me gusta lo humano y sensible de tu post Silvi, pero si queremos reclamar, pedir, gritar o escribir por justicia hay que mirar a ambos lados porque cada uno te dara su explicación.

Hace unos años compré la versión de Jordi Vila. Lo usaba para amenizar reuniones sociales y juegos grupales.

Nunca he creído en lo que está más allá de lo tangible.

Bueno, los griegos eran muy vanidosos y competían físicamente con las mujeres, ahora en cambio vemos mujeres en gym's o usando ternos tipo sastre.
Digo esto porque quiero matizar que por vanidad, salud o trabajo encontraremos un punto convergente donde cada género pasa o roza los límites del otro.

Lo curioso es que estos fenómenos se dan en épocas que no incluyen guerras, épocas sosegadas, del arte, pensamiento o ahora de la revolución industrial.

Inconcebible ver estas manifestaciones en la edad media o durante una guerra mundial, por lo que me queda claro que no es algo indispensable o a donde vayamos a evolucionar.

Creo que son manifestaciones producto irónicamente de "querer ser distintos".

P.D. Es curioso, siempre en manga y animé a pesar de ser nipone, los personajes tienen ojos redondos, te has fijado?
Creo para ellos es forma es un referente de belleza como para el latino el pelo rubio u ojos azules.

...leí tus razones para el cambio de plantilla y créeme Silvi que me sentí muy identificado contigo.
Mi blog empezó personal, luego fue colectivo de 6 amigos y mira ahora, no sabría definirlo jajaja.

Lo bueno es que nunca me gustaron los colores altisonantes y escogí una plantilla beige, digo lo bueno porque hace 2 años, cuando era colectivo, se trabajaba en HTML y ninguno de nosotros tuvo noción de eso y al poner header, chiches, gadgets y demás (cuando se dieron de baja mis amigos) se alteró algo del HTML y desde ahí no me permitió nunca migrar al nuevo blogger, así que todo, hasta links y blogroll lo hago en códigos :S

Silvi, las paradojas no debieran ser parte de la vida al no ser lógicas, pero la vida independiente de ser o no lógica las tiene. Dialécticas mucho más que físicas porsupuesto.
A mi me fascinan las "paradojas temporales" de las que ya hablaba Isaac Asimov y que se pondrían en evidencia en un hipotético caso de que el ser humano domine viajar en el tiempo.
Un ejemplo de ellas son las que se muestran en la peli Back to the future, hay unas 5 de ellas en la primera parte ;)

Ayer noche coincidentemente descubrí tu blog y me enganché a los tiempazos con Aldous Huxley y recordé cuando leí su libro "Las puertas de la percepción" en el que habla de su experiencia con el peyote jajaja que justo fue del que tomaron su nombre The Doors.

Supongo que en esos estudios no está contemplado, pero sería interesante conocer el resultado de un experimento de esas características.

Déjà, le Rocard il l'a dit sur quels sujets faire alliance :

Dans quelles conditions? Bah çà on verra plus tard. Faut voir les scores d'abord. De toute façon, ya pas de mystère; la question principale en cas d'alliance c'est le partage des portefeuilles. Et ce genre de trucs, çà se fait en secret.

En plus, une alliance n'est pas systématiquement avec l'extrême-droite, en Allemagne par exemple... Je te trouve un peu dur de parler alliance UMP-FN, parce que c'est pas vraiment l'idée de Rocard.

Faut regarder, la réalité en face: avec qui les socialistes peuvent-ils faire alliance? Même si Ségo gagne çà risque d'être chaud pour les législatives. Les communistes, çà fait longtemps qu'ils font des scores ridicules. Les verts, sans l'aide des socialistes ils auraient pas un seul député. L'extrême-gauche, on en parle même pas. Il reste qui??

Ceci dit, je suis d'accord avec toi; c'est un peu tôt pour en parler.

Aaaah, les fameux billets à la suppaiku.
L'ancien portable (vieux 3 mois/6 mois/15 jours), c'était une bouse. Celui-là, je l'adore, il fait TOUT. Suit une ribambelle de fonctions abracadabrantes.

Non non, je retarde pas, je parle de la seule candidate qui intéresse TOUT LE MONDE: Ms. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Rien que son nom y pète trop.

En 1994, j'avais lu un article sur elle. Elle projetait déjà une candidature vers 2008 (elle voulait pas se présenter après son mari, ni après un démocrate ou cas où Al Gore aurait gagné par exemple). Après Bush, le timing est parfait pour elle. Son poste de sénateur, ses déclarations, l'argent qu'elle a récolté, les conférences de Bill; elle a TOUT fait pour que ce soit son tour.

Franchement, en regardant son speech j'en ai eu des frissons. Une femme au bureau ovale, çà c'est la classe. Ya pas à dire sont balaises les amerlocains. le Barack y fait pas le poids face à elle, et la sego non plus. ^_^

Las "reglas de operación" son complejas y plagadas de requisitos incumplibles quedando fuera del alcance de los productores rurales reales y de sus usos y costumbres.
