Glen, I think you need to spend a little bit more time with it. Give it a chance. While some workflows may not be for everybody, but I love the fact that I can use IMified from my g-mail chat client on my phone anytime anywhere. Mobility is where the true power of IMified lies as web apps don't always work on WAP browsers.

I have the following
- 50mm f/1.8 lens (you will not be able to auto-focus this lens)
- 50-200mm VR zoom lens

I am getting the following
- SB-600 Speedlight
- Sigma 10-20mm HSM check out the flickr group for some shots. The Nikon D40 flickr groups are very good too.

Seriously, you don't need an extra battery, I have never gone through a battery in 24 hours of shooting, you will get 700 shots before having to charge.

This is a good starters kit, above.

The biggest issue with the D40 is there are not a lot of lenses that will autofocus on the camera, and the ones that are coming out seem to be big bucks because they are really good glass. So anything better than the above lenses you may want to upgrade to a D80 or above to be able to autofocus with the older af lenses.

Of your detailed list, I would really consider going to the sb-600, I think filters other than a polorizing filter for bright daylight are a waste of money as most things can be done in software :) Oh, don't forget a good tripod and a ball head :)

Here is a link about concert photography from today: http://www.cheapshooter.com/2007/09/26/concert-... Thomas Hawk has an article about concert photography on his blog somewhere. The problem with concert photography is the low light and keeping your camera still, you will want to use the auto iso feature on the D40 and use 1600 as the max iso and min shutter speed of 1/30 of a sec. Also use spot meetering, and use the the smallest aperature you have available. Concert photography is tough on the D40 but can be done with patience.

The remote does work on the base D40 model, I own it. Definitely a must have have and it's cheap.

I like it, I like to see what my users are digging and commenting on. I never used digg's friends feature before and even abandoned digg for quite a while just because the community has gotten a bit insane and all the kevin rose fan boys. The new features and provide usefulness and community building. The problem with digg and the sensationalism is the few very vocal users.

I'm fairly new to the whole networking at events thing. It never really mattered because I have had the same employer for 8 years and didn't have the motive/desire to move on. Now that I am working on building a company I am getting much more focused on networking. One thing I would like to add as that if your in a conversation with somebody try and figure out what you can do for them at that exact time, If the person is low on a drink, ask them if you can get a them a drink while they talk to you. This works especially well if your t an event with an open bar :) A bit cheaper too. Just this simple task being may make an a huge impact on them.

Look around, there isn't anybody sitting next to me right now. I have to go out and find them, whether it be online, in the real world, combine them, teach them!

Well some people think we need to alter our education system to "kill jacks". I don't think this is necessary as in order to decide to focus on something you need to have been exposed to lot's of areas. Think about this, the education system is currently setup very general in the lower grades and gradually gains more and more focus until you get to the PHD level where your focus of study is extremely focused. We choose our focus, some people just never seem to do so.

It's all about emotion, whether it be good or bad. Video that doesn't spark some sort of emotion doesn't get fully watched and doesn't get linked too. I would like to ask these questions of everybody who produces video: What emotion are you trying to spark with your video? Laughter? Happyness? Sadness? Anger? Make sure your video sparks some sort of emotion that sucks your viewers in!!!

I try to add people that are interesting to me whether they add me back or not. I use twitter to maintain online friendships and to keep a pulse on the community at large. I'm very simialar in the way chris adds people, if you have 5000 friends and very little followers you don't get an add.

I think when your in the business of content creation the quality of the content is what drives people. This is the same whether your in old media or new media. Old media doesn't keep shows around when people aren't watching. Hard to sell ads against shows people aren't watching. Podtech may have some smart people over there, but their content is boring, zzzzz. Wheather you or old media, new media, blogger, podcaster, writer, presenter, you have to be focused on the quality otherwise it is going to fall while the cream rises to the top.

Confidence is a learned behavior, I am always much more confident when I have learned something really well after doing it a few times.

Practice makes perfect, whether you are talking to to people, giving a presentation, or building the next new website. Very few people have confidence right off the bat, and grow more comfortable/confident each time they do something.

You can be confident at anything, it just takes some trial runs.

As far as business card Tips, I print my own own using Avery's "Clean Edge Business Cards". They look very good and are extremely cheap and I only have to print as much as I need and can change the look of them at a moments notice.

The first time I saw wine library TV I thought, what a crazed lune and thought he was probably an ass. I still think he is a crazed lune, though after seeing him interact with with the online community and even traded a few twitter's back and forth, this is one guy that gets it and is giving the word his knowledge of wine. Gary is great and can't wait to meet him off line and see his passion in full force. He has more passion about wine than I have seen anybody have passion about anything. It's refreshing.

Ok, patch your systems daily and run IDS's and you will not get hacked, I really hate it when an admin says "We have to test the patches first", Well that's the vendor's job wether it be MS, Redhat, etc...

If you do get hacked,
1. don't blow it away, remove the box from the network,
2create a snapshot of the system (for legal reasons.)
3. blow away and reinstall, or better yet, pull the drives and install new drives and rebuild the system.

Discovery HD is the most beautiful thing on TV. It is so good that, when I watch TV, I check to see what is on Discovery first. Glad your enjoying your HD, the novelty does wear off after a bit, but I still tune into discovery everytime I hit that power button.

I got my Hyundai 32" HD LCD about a year ago. Price was a major factor, I didn't want to spend over $1000 and I did it. The Hyundai got very good reviews, definately not the best, but it was the best at that price point. I am very happy with it. It got me into the HD realm very cheeply and I couldn't be happier.

My hell is that my wife was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis early this year and has multiple symptoms that come and go. She just started taking shots that make her feel like crap for 24 hours once a week. I'd give anything to come up with a cure and make her feel 100% all the time. That is my personal hell and it breaks my heart everytime she is not feeling good which is very frequent.

Now that is my personal hell which I can't make go away until someone comes up with a cure for this mystarious disease, which doesn't seem likely to happen anytime soon.

You need to get Matt to implement the "Simple Tags" plugin for you. http://www.broobles.com/scripts/simpletags/ Makes my life extremely easy for tagging and works with Windows Live writer. You just type the following syntax into your post > [tags]Tagging, Wordpress, Scoble, blog [/tags]

I was an onfolio user for a long time, then Microsoft bought it out and doesn't look like they will be supporting firefox anymore. So I tried out rojo and bloglines, loved rojo except for no shortcuts so I switched to bloglines. Now since google readers upgrades it will take me a lot of convincing to switch from google reader. JJJ K JJJ :) Oh, and don't forget the M shortcut or the S shortcut.

Realisticly, in order for any of those organizations to have a fighting chance in the the political realm is for them to unite and develop a common agenda. None of them will be able to be effective if they are all competing for resources from the tech community.
