Btw, it's Ron, I used to blog a while back but stopped for a while. I like the new set-up you have here (I really don't know how "new" it is).

I saw your comment on Steve W's blog. To be honest I don't visit those universalist blogs anymore. I've kinda passed that point in my walk. It seems like they have a few points that they like to hammer in over and over again. I got tired of it.

Well the packages arrived, took everything out starting putting it together. Then noticed that this was too big to be a loveseat. A sofa was shipped instead of the loveseat. Mistakes happen, I called Customer Service and they are shipping out today a loveseat and return labels for shipping the sofa back. What a great company to do business with. I will post again when the loveseat arrives.....:-)

Loewenstein's comment about the Birthright participants not speaking to a genuine Palestinian is hilarious coming from him. In the 13 days that Loewenstein spent in Israel for his one and only visit, he spent almost all his time in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, thus speaking ONLY with Palestinians. No, I lie. He did speak with me when I hosted him over the weekend; that was when I discovered how little he knows about Israel, Jewish history and the Middle East.

Since then, he has shown no advance in his knowledge, but only in the prejudice and blinkered hatred he exhibits to anything Jewish. All this demonstrrates an embittered and lonely person, uncomfortable in the body he inhabits and the background he desperately tries to disown.

I opened an account with Emigrant Direct and I found no problems whatsoever. I linked it to my personal bank checking account so transfers are very easy. It takes about 2 weeks to go through all the transfer testing and security requirements. I am very well pleased so far. The latest interest rate APY is 3.25%. You can't beat it when you compare it to a CD. This Emigrant account is much more flexible.

Let's be a little more reasonable here.

First of all not all people who have trouble paying their debts are "foolish and irresponsible" as you imply. They may have had a medical catastrophy for a member of their family or they may have lost their job. I can think of many instances that life thows our way where one can get caught up in economic trouble.

Secondly, The banks who push credit cards on people who are bad risks are largely at fault for even offering credit to these people in the first place. This is especially true for elder retired Senior citizens who are living on fixed incomes and are facing outrageous medical costs and who do not understand the nature of a credit trap especially at 20% + interest rates. Credit cards are offered and maintained by these immoral stinking banks who do not care where their next sucker comes from. CitiBank is one of them.

I saw a sign the other day outside of an Apple dealer. It said "Apple now runs Windows". Apple is talking about Windows support in OS X. Soon, it will not matter anymore which platform you use. As a developer, I would love to code for the OS X, but in my industry (healthcare) I would be out of business in a week since almost all the hospital database systems use Windows workstations. I think if Apple came off their purest purch and actually had the kind of developer support MSFT does, then you would see Apple have far greater market share.

I think we as cyclists are usually on edge sometimes because of close calls or someone that does honk at us to get out of the road. Motorists just get upset because we are superior to them. Kidding (or am I?). I think being in a car really is like being trapped in a cage, and the more you deal with other inconsiderate drivers the more enraged you get and the more it builds up. My father drove a delivery van for a living. Needless to say, when he wasn't working, he wasn't driving. He had to deal with jerks on the road during work, hell is he was going to do it on his time off. I think doing that for a living is one thing that contributed to almost having a heart attack 3 years ago. When he was getting out of the hospital after surgery, the doctor told him he couldn't drive for 4 weeks, and he told the doctor thank you.

I know when I drove, I would get pissed off at the stupid things that other driver's did.

Always a good time riding in the pride parade, but have to resist engaging the loons. Particularly the guy with the electrical cords. I think he actually thinks he is being clever. And the guy with the list of all who will burn. As Dan Nailen said last year, I think I might fit into half of them, at least a quarter.

That was actually pretty dickish I must say. Walking your bike through the store is one thing, but riding around is just asking for bikes to be banned. While I have no problem with hooliganism, which that clearly was, I believe it has its place and time. And when you actually have something you would like to accomplish, stuff like that is counterproductive. The sign is not a surprise and should really have been expected. Geez, when did I become the adult.

I don't have it in for your actions. Just that one. As I said, walking your bike through the store is one thing, but riding your bike though the store is just being childish. Maybe you were not asked to leave, but now bikes are banned from the store. It is counter-productive. It may have been possible to get a statement from the head office that bikes were allowed in the store, if someone were to go that route, but not anymore. It also paints a bad view of cyclists to the people shopping.

My second comment on the experiment is basically to say "what did you expect?"

What anger? I am not being angry, I am just calling you on these counter-productive activities. Not angry at all. And why would you think there is some other issue? There is nothing personal here, I just think that it was a dumb thing to do and someone needed to say it. I really would like to know where you see anger, cause I was quite calm when I wrote it.

You are correct ebot, I did not know the whole story. I was not aware that you had rode around the store on a number of occasions without incident. I foolishly assumed that since you were documenting this (and the other "experiments") that there was some purpose. Perhaps, as I indicated, getting bikes to be allowed officially in the store since there seemed to be mixed experiences. I still say it was dickish because there was more here than just riding around the store whilst doing your shopping. As well, the intent here seemed to be pure hooliganism. Sad, because it is possible that someone may have been able to accomplish getting bikes allowed to be brought in the store.

I looked through my post again, still not sure where you see any anger. You actually seem to be set off a little there. Maybe you could just accept what I have to say as constructive criticism. That is, if your pride lets you.

And even a loose definition of experiment implies that there is some idea to be test. For example, I have this hypothesis that there are three types of hangovers: nausea, raging headache, and, most rare, the feeling of death. I have discovered this through rigorous testing in an experiment that I call "PBR friday." That is an experiment.

Wow, all this encouragement to drink more. My colleague here thinks I produce more results after a night of drinking and has recommended "make sure you get drunk tonight, we have data to produce tomorrow" or something to that effect. I wonder if I can count beer as research supplies (or here in italia, vino would be better). Yeah, I code wonderfully under the effects of alcohol: "why the hell did I name the variables 'peroni' and 'secco'." But seriously, I was mainly thinking of the quick turn. I cannot image that would be successful on a tall bike (that is really where the center of gravity will do you in, I think). Actually, now that i think about it, and speaking recently of experiments (that nobody in their right mind would fund me for or participate in), this is a hypothesis that needs to be tested. Chetti, you are my guinea pig here (we all know Chetti is not in his right mind). I actually did my Road I on a no brake fixie (the same no brake fixie that Krisha is in possession of). And I think Michael Wise may be the first LCI certified on a fixed gear. Oh yeah, the quick stop was hard, but Ashley let me skid it through.

Sorry, my bad, forgot who we were talking about there and figured there may be some method to the madness (however, I do suspect some madness to the method). At least with my madness I know there is some connection with reality, even if the connection is tenuous and often makes sense only to me.

There was a pretty cool mid-bike (a not-so-tall bike) owned by a performer at the Ferrara Busker's Festival. It was like two bikes put on top of one another the long way and had a mount to carry a unicycle on the back. Wish I got a picture. Maybe next year.

You can also go straight from 11th ave up popperton park way to the shoreline trail, brings you out near Huntsman Cancer Institute. My experience with the homeless and FNB in Connecticut was overall positive, they were happy to get our food, and even if they were initially "vegetarian food!!!" after they tasted it the changed their mind. On the subject of vegan thanksgiving stuff, just buy cranberry sauce or corn, there are plenty of options of vegan food for thanksgiving--not that you would know if from thanksgiving at my parents'..."we have potatoes for you."

Bought one today....returning it tomorrow. Nothing but black screen with audio on the digital channels and really crappy analog reception. Software locked up my computer twice and that never happens on my system. Remote didn't work at all. Pinnacle's support forums are filled with similar complaints and no response from Pinnacle. Save your money and time.

There IS NO gun issue only those people who use it for a political statement to reinforce their extreme aversion towards government rules and regulations. It's a highly charged subject for the simple reason that certain people use it well, through the appeal of fear. Nothing more than sloganeering and jingoism.

The Libertarians have finally seen the possibility that some part of the government can stand up against the RWing and others who use their power to carelessly enforce laws. Maybe now they can let truly progressive government officials, like Sen. Obama, work with the private sector to address the real gun problem that lies within the concrete jungles of our major cities.

That page is formated as an HTML table, and I have noticed that some themes don't handle tables very well, so I guess that's the problem you are running into.

That's one of the things I like about the CivicSpace theme is that it has a completely different "admin" theme, so these sorts of problems are usually avoided.

it was just okay for me. not bad, but not great either. didn't really for the characters a whole lot, other than Ben's nerd friends. some of the stuff seemed kind of overly dramatic, with the use of a lot of slow motion with the card dealing and stuff. it made me laugh how they were always inserting sound effects for when the cards hit the table. i might have appreciated this a little bit more if I actually knew how to play blackjack.

Since everyone is anti-E85, what are the other REALISTIC alternatives? Hybrids? Well I love the fact that most people by hybrids thinking they will get 50 miles to the gallon, when in fact, if the by hybrid with a V6 theyll only get 30 miles to the gallon. How does this help us at all? So, then you may say, well why dont we push for solar and wind power. How are you going to power a car with solar or wind...id love to see that work. While all of you are fighting over whats the best way to decrease our dependence on oil, which causes pollution and is a terrible drain on our natural resources, nothing gets done. Why cant we take a pragmatic, multi-step approach to find more efficient renewable fuels. Why do we have to find the silver bullet right away? If demand for E85 increases, there will be more money spent to find more efficient and cheaper ways to produce it...like using switch grass, which is a better source for ethanol. But, if we all bitch about ethanol and what renewable fuel to use, and E85 demand doesnt increase, I will bet you a lot of money, car and oil companies will say what theyve been saying since the 70s...there is no market for cars that run on renewable fuels, so we are not going to invest in it. The only way to get more efficient and cheaper renewable fuels is to show the big bad "market" its worth the investment. Otherwise it will never happen. And, right now E85 seems to be the best way to start showing we can ween ourselfs off oil and get the general public to adopt the use of renewable fuels. I would love to hear from all of you what a better solution...that is ready to go to market right now. And, dont even bring up hydrogen fuel cells, because its going to be another 10 years...at least before those cars are brought to the market. That would be another 10 years of polluting our earth. Please someone lay out a better option than E85, thats ready for prime time?

I agree sugar based ehtanol is probably the best method for making E85 at the moment. However, the sugar cane industry is never going to let Congress lift the tariffs on imported sugar products from Brazil. So, until they do sugar based ethanol made in Brazil is too expensive. I don't agree with your comment that we're better off using conventional gasoline than E85. E85 is much better for the enviroment. Conventional gasoline creates more benzenne and MTBE fumes than E85. So, I'm not sure how you think buring gasoline is better for the enviroment.

We should definately strive to make ethanol out other sources that are more efficient and easier to break down...like switch grass. However, the only way we're going to get more efficient ethanol products is if the producers of ethanol and other businesses thinking to enter the market, see a demand for ethanol and that Americans are read to buy renewable fuels. E85 is the best alternative to fossil fuels we have right now...I'd rather have cars burn corn based E85 then have them burn regular gasoline for another 20 years before a "perfect" renewable fuel comes along. Corn based E85 is the best place to start.

I too read Eric's article in Isthmus and was startled by all that happened to this kid. Indeed there may be people who did try to help but the Social Service people really blew this one. And as to the janitor and Klang being labeled as HEROS-baloney. If the janitor saw Eric coming from 139 feet away with a gun, why did he not lock the door to prevent entry. As to Mr. Klang grabbing him from behind, knowing that this would startle Eric, that is just plain stupid as originally stated. Eric certainly deserves a new and FAIR trial, where the many truths that were not mentioned can be aired fully. If Eric had wanted to kill someone, the biggest perpetrator in bullying him was standing right in front of the office door. It would have been no trouble to point and shoot him right there. Let the trial happen as it is obvious that there are too many people, teachers and students, who simply lied on the stand when offered the chance to be honest. Eric has personally stated to me that he does not want to get off totally free as he knows what he did was wrong. He is just asking for all the facts to be on the table so that a jury can weigh all the facts. It is obvious that the school and area are not willing to address this bullying problem seriously enough to prevent such a thing from happening again. Already there are threats against Eric coming from Cazenovia way. You people never seem to learn. Just remember-you reap what you sow, so beware.

Talking about "second derivatives" or any other derivative on a discontinuous, finite (& small) data set such as the VIX doesn't make any sense to a mathematician. The assumptions are, or seem to be, an infinite number of points in the data set (contradicted by reality) wherein the data points are very close together (less then epsilon for all positive epsilon).

Engineers seem to have a hard time understanding that performing a mathematical operation and getting a result doesn't mean that what you've got makes any sense at all.

Building stadiums for millionaires or billionaires is not something the State of Illinois should do. Countless experts have determined with sound economic research the return on these projects does not warrant the expenditures of public dollars. If the State is going to spend money, why not spend money on attracting a company to Souothern Illinois that will offer high paying jobs. the reason given for early voting is to improve the turnout. why set the time frame at three weeks? why not four weeks? why not six weeks? why do the democrats always look for ways to try to increase the turnout, when voter turnout is directly related to whether people feel their vote really makes a difference. there is generally more vote fraud in the democratic districts. e. st. louis typically votes 90%+ for democrats and there is always vote fraud. the e. st. louis election board just published there new voter list and they have 22,000+ voters in a city with a population of about 30,000. this is the same city with over 10,000 students in there school district. do the math, it doesn't add up. i have lived in the metro east area for over 50 years and i have never heard an official from e.st. louis or st. clair county express any concern about vote fraud in other areas of st. clair county. recent trials resulted in conviction of a number of elected officals, precinct workers, and campaign workers for fraud in 04. Vote fraud is the problem. everytime i hear the concern about showing voter id, with a picture at the polls, i wonder if any of these same people have ever been on an airplane or cahsed a check, or opend an account at a bank. spend money on a picture id for everyone and voter fraud will be reduced significantly and the integrity of the vote process will be improved and voting will increase. luechtefeld represents part of st. clair county and has seen and experienced first hand the results of voter fraud and its turning off others about voting. IMPROVE the integrety of the vote process and give more choices at the ballot box(eliminate gerrymandering, which protects the incumbents) and more people will vote, because they feel it will make a differnce.

a real issue with poverty statistics is theat income is the criterea for being classified as under the poverty level. someone on poverty can own there home and have other assets and still be classified as poor. the definition has not been changed for decades and does not give a clear picture of real poverty.

rich- according to the lastest census bureau information(2004) poverty rate for illinois, as defined by the census bureau is 11.9%. also, the census bureau definition of poverty is "set of money income threshholds that vary by family size and composition to detect who is poor." definition of poverty does not include other assets owned by the family, including a home or other assests. there has been a big debate on changing the definition of poverty to include assest owned, which would most likely reduce the poverty rate.

look for a big tax increase in the future to fund the previously unfunded pensions. the problem with public pensions is they are rich in benefits. not only is the percentage of the pension retirement pay to income high, but things like going on disability and receiving a pension and short term qualification for a pension are way out of whack with private pension plans. most govenmental entities are experiencing financial problems because of the lucrative pensions for employees. public employess in general receive some of the most lucrative and rich benefits of any wage earner group.

i have a novel suggestion. why not propose a freeze on taxes/fees, what ever you want to call revenue.

we will know the med mal crisis is getting better when there are other insurers moving into the state to give isme competition and doctors stop leaving the state. doctors are reluctant to move in not knowing the status of the legislation passed last year putting caps on settlements. if that law gets overturned by the supreme court in a few years, its back to square one. if isme was making so much money and the profits were so good would some other enterprising insurance company start operating in illinois to make a profit. the situation in madison and st clair county is still critical. doctors in that area have stated there are not enough doctors avalible to handle new patients. if the governors all kids program passed and was adequately funded doctors would not be able to see the kids, because of to few doctors.

walmart is able to offer lower prices because they receive over $1 billion in tax incentives from local communities each year. that goes a long way towards helping the bottom line. it in not their retail expertise that gives them their advantage, it is these financial incentives they get. also, i am always amazed at the great anti union attitude towards walmart and then you see all the union folks going to the store to shop. go figure. walmart is not a good contributor to local community charities and chamber of commerce. by the way, i do not shop at walmart.

yellow dog. public wants more money because the politicians keep saying more money is the answer to better education. they don;t want to address the real reform issues. we have had year after year of more new schools built, higher pay for administation and teachers. bottom line education expenditures were way above the level of inflation during the late 90's and the outcome has been incresed dropout rates and lower act, sat test scores and students without adequate skills for college or a career. more money without accountability and real goals will do nothing to improve the quality of education. we have all seen the result of failed eduction policy over the last 30 years. my gosh, we are still operating the school year based on an agrarian school year. i guess, a lot of those inner city students need three months off to tend to the crops. real reform and accountability mean the same dollars would result in better outcomes. get off of this need more money campaign. the habitual anthem of the democrats to pander to the teachers unions.

staff members rarely, if ever, do well in general elections, especially at the mational level. i would like someone to name the last staffer to win a congressional race anywhere in the county! staffers run an office well and develop policy, sometimes, but are not good in public settings. that's why they were office managers for many years. they spend their career taking notes and talking with lobbyist and big donors and constituents. they are never responsible for the ultimate decisions. voters will see zinga was right last time when she said evans was not up to the task of serving his district. she will not have to mention it this time, because the voters have seen the result play out. nothing makes voters as mad as being lied to and duped, which they were by evans. hare was a part of that equation. this race will be competitive. hare will be viewed as the office guy and not a real candidate.

Minimum wage is a failed policy that has not worked, especially if it is set at the national and state level. how can you have the same minimum wage in chicago as downstate or the suburbs. it's called social engineering. chicago is seeing the effect of this by seeing all the box stores build outside the city. chicago loses sales taxes and property taxes and the poor have to drive father to get the lower prices. just love those liberals who enjoy social engineering and think they know what is right for everyone. let's take a look at some of the projects the alderman and mayor have supported over the years that have been utter failures. rich, that is a good question. name all the failed attempts by the city of chicago and how much they cost the taxpayers.

people are so use to corruption they, unfortunately, accept it. look at the corruption in chicago and daley still gets favorable ratings from the voters in chicago.
i wonder whether this will be much of a story in downstate illinois news media. makes great reading for political junkies, bloggers and reporters, but most people don't care as long as the govenment services they want continue to get delivered on time. kudos for rich breaking the story.

sounds like someone complaining about something that is not a big deal. how many drivers under age 25 stopped versus drivers age 55 and over? how many drivers are stopped with cars that don't operate properly, which could be the reason they were stopped in the first place. maybe minority car owners have cars in worse condition. anyone can come up with lots of statistics, if they are trying to prove their viewpoint.

1. She's not promising anybody anything.

2. She has a refreshing candor that is sadly lacking in the current Governor.

3. She will instill maturity in the office.

4. She says her aganda is to hold the line on spending, pay down the debts, and make state government live within its means.

5. She won't take guns away from law abiding citizens.

6. She can play the accordion better than Rod.

7. I agree with her positions on some issues, don't on others, but think the first five above are more important than my agreement on other issues.

What Rich Miller neglected to state about the rest of the world is the quality of this care.
Why do so many people from Canada come to the United States for specialized care? They can't get it Canada.
Also, many currently insured in the United States through benefit rich plans in the government and union sector will actually see their benefits decline and cost to them go up.

Kevin What rock have you ben hiding under? Shimkus won the race last year with over 61% of the vote in a down year for Republicans and the taint of the Foley scandel. Shimkus has done a very admirable job as a conservative Republican.
As for as Cooper, he did worse than most of the other Democrats that ran against Shimkus.
You can be a booster for the democrats, but you sure don't know the district.

I think stripping the victims of lynchings naked has far more to do with the perpetrators getting a sexual charge out of it than anything else. I mean, if you want them dead, shoot them and walk away. The stripping, to me at least, suggests something far more sexual.

I think that Dan Riehl's assertion that Sparkman may have been a child molester, in spite of zero evidence at all suggesting that, has more to do with Riehl's own "feelings" towards children. Until I know more about Dan Riehl, I don't think that can be ruled out.

When looking online with the major vendors (Dell, Gateway, Toshiba, etc), don't forget to look at their Outlet/Refurbished units. They are normally about 15-25% less, but have the same warranty of a new one. It is like shopping at a used car lot, you have to take what they have in stock at the moment, instead of customizing it.

Could you modify your posting, changing "Oklahoma State Police" to "Oklahoma Highway Patrol"?

While I know the majority of the OHP troopers wouldn't do something like this (one bad apple spoils the bunch), there is a fine police department at Oklahoma State University that will commonly be found via a Google of "Oklahoma State Police". I would hate for someone to quickly read your post and get a believe OSUPD was involved.
