In certain places on my blog I've said so: The class system that stifles innovation and success in all but the upper classes is still somewhat evident...Blah.

This is about the US elections though. I'll comment on British politics no doubt when a UK election happens.

I don't want the UK to get worse than it is; it's bad enough already. If the wrong influences drift across from the US, then it could go further downhill.

As a side issue; UK politics is unfortunately very unlike US politics: Here the politicians elect the politicians; the UK people decide which group of politicians will be in power, and the politicians in power run their own agenda from that point on: The UK people just have to put up with whatever they get until the next election: Like I said; the UK sucks.

Re: Why I Simply Cannot Vote For Barack Obama

OMG the Crusades are starting.

Dominae, Padre, Espiritum Santu.
Pax vobiscum. [#8]

When you eventually decide to customise your Wordpress theme, you'll find that you can actually do this from inside Wordpress itself. If you prefer the long way round you can also edit the theme by uploading it to your computer, editing it as required, and uploading the edited files to your blog in place of the existing files once you are happy with it.

Wordpress may at first appear rather daunting; particularly previous to installation. Once you've uploaded it and edited a file or two to get it running, (Full instructions are available at wordpress.org, and I think Dave's already done a vid on it, and will probably do more on that too.)you'll find Wordpress to be a very versatile and flexible tool.

If you learn php too, (I'm still learning.) - well just look at what Dave's done with this blog and PCMech: The sky's the limit.

I'll just mention, also, that if you or anyone else happen to be using or intending to use, Fasthosts in the UK as a hosting provider; you may have problems setting up a Wordpress install on their Windows Home package. If you're going to use them as your web hosting provider for your blog I recommend their Linux Home or Linux Developer package. Their Linux servers run Red Hat Linux, and setting up a Wordpress blog on them is no problem at all. If you already have a Windows Home package with them, just phone them and ask for a transfer to a Linux Home package. It'll take a few minutes for them to transfer your account to a Linux server, and it won't cost you any extra.

From the above paragraph I would guess that Linux servers in general are probably a better bet for a Wordpress blog, no matter who the hosting provider. (Someone please correct me if I am wrong.)

Re: How To Replace Your Wordpress Search With Google

Thanks so much David for that most useful tip, and the php.

I've added it to kkomp.com .

Re: 2008 Annual Blogging Income Report

I like the sound of this: After full training, Malika can run the business for you every other week while you change, feed, entertain and bath your daughter, whilst at the same time teaching her early how to be a girl-geek. - Brilliant thinking! I started with a free theme and am adding to and changing little bits of it as time goes by.

I have to admit that, when I started out over 6 months ago, I had almost absolutely zero idea of css and php, despite knowing a bit about html. - I could build a computer and install/optimise the relevant software with very little if any problems; but I had almost no ideas about blogging. (A huge percentage of what I know now has been gleaned from this site as well as PCMech.)

As time goes by I'm analysing my theme's code and working out what does what, where, and why. This enables me to make a few improvements from time to time. I understand that David will be covering css and php over on PCMech at some point in the future, which will be really helpful.

As suggested here, I've spent the early months concentrating on content, also its presentation style - which I hope has improved over time.

My visitor count has progressively increased overall over that period, and I'm now attempting to monetize my blog to some extent.

There's one heck of a long way to go; and it'll always be a work-in-progress, but I certainly intend to stay tuned and keep watching this space: Thank you for such a good and informative blog David.

Blessings.

Re: Moving Your Feedburner Feeds to Google

I've had it with Feedburner lately: They stopped my RSS feed without notifying me whatsoever for the third time recently. Each failure and mistake is a rung on the ladder to success: unless you tread on the rungs of failure to get there you'll never reach the pinnacle of success.

You won't get much traffic in your first month unless you're really lucky. This is because FriendFeed suggests that all new users follow them from day 1: Scoble, for instance, among others.

Once they get followed by everyone on FriendFeed they automatically get followed everywhere else too, on every other social networking platform.

How much they pay FriendFeed for this and/or why FriendFeed chooses to promote them particularly I have no idea; but they can't really fail. Does anyone know why this is? Is there a way that others can gain following recommendations from FriendFeed and/or other social networking sites? It does seem unfair that they have the advantage from the outset; especially to newcomers.

I remember when I first joined FriendFeed I was instantly shown pictures of the rich-looking godlike elite and urged to follow them before all others. Did I get the wrong impression? I was totally new to social networking only 9 months ago when this happened. But, Does It Matter Anymore?

The best thing with regard to this is that it's an SEO booster.

What!? BBB accreditation has nothing to do with Google ranking... Oh but it does in a way have something to do with it; not so much to do with authority as to do with trust: -

Search engines will give a site a better ranking if it's a known and respected company. For instance; one of my sites, shazzalive.com: You've never heard of it right? It has very little content, it's really currently something of nothing. How much trust is a search engine going to rank it by? Virtually zero probably. Compare that to, say, amazon.com - Everyone knows amazon.com; it has a fantastic reputation and almost everyone if not everyone would trust it commercially. It publishes its accounts publicly and has withstood all inspections and scrutiny thrown at it by any and all official bodies. By those facts alone, amazon.com gets a listing at or near the top of the first page, while shazzalive.com gets listed on page 100+.

Dave's boxing clever here: A BBB Accreditation might at first appear to be fairly pointless, even a waste of money on the surface; but there is method behind his "madness": A BBB Accreditation increases trust in PC Media Inc. and in pcmech.com, maybe even davidrisley.com too; and subsequently scores extra points with Google.

Every little helps.

Re: If You Could Go Full-Time With Your Blog, Would You?

Whilst going full-time with a blog would be great if it were constantly generating at least enough money for a full-time income and to enable the owner to live a good life, I feel at the early stages, before it begins doing so, that it would be a better idea to have one's irons in more than one fire.

Also there may be a danger of developing complacency over time if blogging were one's sole occupation and income-stream, which would be noticed by the readers and result in a loss of traffic. I'm not saying this would definitely happen; but it may be a possibility.

Re: Is Twitter Useless and Over-Hyped?

Well Raul, I guess someone had to say it. - And quite obviously you no doubt have a good bunch of friends that you socialise and do business with with offline. It's good that you're doing so well.

I guess that we "narcissistic, lonely, insecure, ADHD, introverted" people will just have to make do with our online lot and communicate with the entire planet online, building valuable business contacts and making shedloads of money, while the "real" people such as yourself enjoy yourselves offline in your local-area-cliques, limited in your scope by the constraints of your immediate environment, coupled with your travelling time and how much fual you can afford in order to travel around.

Re: Is Twitter Useless and Over-Hyped?

Firstly; your last point: I realise that I made a typo with the "a" in "fuel". I didn't notice it until after I'd submitted the comment. - And there's not a lot anyone can do about it at that point. Spell-laming is so lame in itself.

Point 2: If David were a loser he'd hardly be making a six-figure income now would he? I mean come on, get real.

I see losers almost every day; sitting in the sun, procrastinating and "philosophising" about why society is so unfair and wrong. - Complaining about their lot in life, yet not doing a single thing to improve it. Making excuses about why they can't improve it. Finding ways to escape from reality any way they can, rather than face it and change it. David's no loser; in fact quite the opposite.

- And the people who buy David's products? Everyone has to start somewhere. A good place to start is to learn from someone who's already done it and got the T-shirt. I suppose, as an alternative, you could always spend many years discovering things by trial and error. - But why go through all that pain and hardship when, for a few bucks, you can buy all the knowledge you need from someone who knows what they're talking about?

Anonymity and wearing an e-mask may be useful to some people on the internet; for reasons best known to themselves. - But, in the online world of social networking, doing so is a bit self-defeating if you want to become a member of the online community. On Usenet (newsgroups), for example; there are numerous trolls, kooks, nym-shifters, flamers, lamers, etc; but that's a completely different world to Twitter and the like. Things are moving forwards.

I once heard Twitter likened to a huge online party. Go in there wearing a mask and people will soon see through it.

Why do you say that I love anonymity? The truth is, in fact, quite the opposite: I have an established online identity, as does David as well as most other bloggers and entrepreneurs. - It's a very useful commodity to have too. You may note also that we use our real names. - So much for "anonymity" eh?

There's no need to take everything that someone says at face value: Having established an online relationship with an individual, read between the lines and check for consistency. - You'll soon be able to tell who wears a mask and who's for real.

Re: My Evolution Into a Six Figure Blogger

Have you ever considered selling the course in 2 formats: Those being the online version and the home study course? - Or maybe both for 1 1/2 times the original price. However if there is any chance that you could behave something like a reasonable human being then I and my readers would be happy to hear your point of view, in addition to your better way to make money on the internet.

Thank you for your input.

P.S. Another thing I'd ask is that you use a proper email address rather than a throwaway spam-catcher address.

Re: ‘An Opportunity That Nobody Should Miss Out On’

"Moose" lol. It's a working email address true, but it's not a proper address. I very much doubt you'll get any spam, but just for your peace of mind I'll remove the cloaked reference.

Have you any idea how much spam all blog owners actually get? It's quite a vast amount. It's really crazy that they even bother with it in most cases, as most of it is unintelligible anyway.

What other tricks do you do other than writing insults and threats in a drunken drugged-up stupour? (Subsequent reboot attempts showed that the BIOS was unable to locate the CPU; therefore I reasoned that the faulty chipset had blocked access to it.) I rebuilt that machine using a Gigabyte board, also with an nVidia chipset, and am typing this on it now.

I'm running an AMD Athlon 64 x 2, 2.2GHz CPU on the new board. I'm hanging on to the old Sempron CPU, marked as possibly faulty as I can't be sure that the fault was actually the nVidia chipset rather than the CPU itself, or maybe even both.

Nevertheless; whether the fault lay with the chipset, the CPU, or both, it would be interesting to know of your experiences with nVidia's chipsets.

Re: SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

'Strange question. Here's a very recent example:

When energy prices went up by 33% our gas and electricity bills went up by 40%. Now that energy prices have fallen by 40% our gas and electricity bills are going to fall next month by a measly 10%! - And the energy companies are trying to appear generous.

I wouldn't go so far as to describe these as either anti-British or insults. They are the products of my cynical outlook on growing commercial greed. - As if the credit-crunch hadn't taught anyone anything.

As for Apture being a memory-drain; it appears that it does use up quite a lot of resources. - If removing it has indeed cured the problem as it appears to have done.

Re: Zalman’s Wireless Power

It's so bloody ironic this: I write an April Fool's post on the 31st and publish it just before midnight... If anyone else wants to know then read this article.

I see no reason why the same can't be done with the XP SP3 ISO. Perhaps you'd like to give it a try and report on what happens?

Thank you for your comment, which has brought an interesting new dimension to the discussion.

Blessings.

Re: RAM: Stick Another Stick in Today Why Not?

I thought that I'd add that I am in no way doubting the accuracy of the above calculation as set out by Synapse Syndrome, aka "Sarah Palin", aka "Syphilis Syndrone". Like I said; I personally calculated it at several terabytes; 16.78 million to be exact, as ss pointed out.

I think what ss fails to understand is that this isn't a blog targeted at engineers and geeks alone in order to enhance their knowledge. This blog is targeted at anyone and everyone.

Engineers and geeks should already know exactly how much memory a 64-bit operating system is able to utilise. Those who aren't in either category most probably don't want to be blinded by science; so several terabytes will suffice as a rough figure. Which non-geek is going to run a 64-bit operating system with over a terabyte of RAM in the forseeable future anyway? I have no idea why ss is making such a fuss over nothing. He even sent me a barrage of insults over a typo at one point; which is part of the reason he's now banned from commenting, since he seems unable to add much of value to the conversation.

Re: Is it Worth Running a RAID Array?

Although I previously banned SS from commenting, this comment, although negative in the main and full of his own self-importance, does contribute something to the discussion, so I allowed it.

My preference for a Linux server does have something to do with WordPress, yes, but it goes further than that. What they don't seem to realise is that their obvious hunger for money is in a way causing people to not want to part with their funds in exchange for Microsoft products. If the softies were a bit more reasonable about their policies and made decent computing available to everybody and not just those with enough spare capital to pay a lot of $$$ to them then their sales volume would increase no end.

What we need is an OS with just 2 versions again; like with XP: Home and Professional, rather than Basic, A-Bit-Less-Basic, Almost-Worth-Buying, Worth-Buying, Worth-Buying-If-You-Can-Afford=It, Rip-Off, and Massive-Rip-Off.

- Having said that we have yet to see Microsoft's pricing for their what seems like 57 varieties of 7. - Without doubt I think I can safely say that none are going to be cheap: Not with regard to price anyway.

Re: Microsoft and the Massive 7 UK Con

'Great detective work: Many thanks.

Although it's now clear that The UK con's end is in sight; it would be interesting to find out how many people have fallen for it in the interim.

Also, whilst the pricing is indeed good, there does, nevertheless, appear to be a discrepancy between forty-nine dollars ninety-nine cents US and forty-nine pounds UK. I don't know what currency converter they were using, but it's got then bringing in more from the UK than the USA.

Have you readers been conned into buying Vista to get 7 "free"?

Re: How to Avoid Paying Extra for XP Mode(?)

;-)

Re: The Windows 7 System Repair Disk

Thank you. Previously when manufacturers used low-quality electrolytics only there was a significant problem caused by gas bubbles building up in the electrolyte dielectric and causing a problem known as "capacitor plague".

The solid-core capacitors used in place of electrolytics are normally tantalum dielectric capacitors; which are less prone to current-leakage through the dielectric, in addition to being less prone to internal chemical reactions.

As you say it's definitely worth the extra for the increased stability and longevity of the motherboard.

Re: Heads-Up on the Future of This Blog: Public Newsletter

'Change of plan: I'll only be transferring a few articles over to shazzalive.com; rather than all of them. Very nice.

I often find myself sitting in front of the computer at night and thinking that I'd better pack up soon or I won't get much sleep. Then I look out of the window and the dawn is breaking; so I just varry on and get a decent extended sleep the following night. It looks like I'm doing it again tonight too. :)

One thing that I would say. and David implanted this in my mind when he last viewed my blog a few weeks ago, is that there is no real point of central focus at the top of the screen; such as a logo.

I enter the page above with my eyes top left. I see a dark expanse with a little colour in it. I see the menu to the right and a nicely layed-out page below. My eyes drop to the Twitter bird. Is it linked? click Obviously not. shrugs and I move down to the post and start reading.

I'd love to see a partially-transparent logo in the top left corner, colour-synchronised with the background that it's on but standing out quite visibly nevertheless.

I'd enter top left and look at that; scan around using that point as a reference, then move to something else that I like the look of...

You could even code a full-width image into the bottom of your header.php file perhaps, below the body html tag. That might look rather good aesthetically; so that the image, which is your logo, appears at the very top of the page on every page and post.

I must stop now: Too many suggestions is my weak point.

I like especially the theme you've chosen and the contrasting colour scheme which is nevertheless pleasing on the eye.

You're doing well. :)
