It's all good James. We can move on with our lives now and make a better future with what we've learned from working there. It will definitely be a stepping stone for most of us, it's too bad that stairway got cut away as soon as it did. But this puts us in a good position to be hired by other web development companies ... I hope. hehe.

Magazine Design was actually not on my agenda. I forgot to mention in my blog that I have a BA in Magazine Journalism and my capstone course was a magazine design workshop/seminar. My addiction even dictated my choice of college degrees. At least I know I'm in the right place.

I guess it's sort of a Molly Bang thing, except with motion added. We can illustrate it however we choose (photography, illustrations, etc). There are no specific requirements for the writing, just that we have to have some kind of scripting, either in voice over form or in words on the screen.

It has to be our own story, not a story that's already been written (ie, Little Red Riding Hood). We have to audio, either sound effects, a song or both. The story cannot be the story of the song, but the song can drive our (new) story.

It would probably be helpful for you to ask Stephanie to send you a few of the sample files she showed us. That really helped clear things up for me.

Yes, unfortunately, that will give me two art/design classes, but the bulk of the classes I want to take are art/design. It's inevitable that I get stuck with more than one in a semester. And I'd rather have a 5:30 class than an 8:15 class.

Aren't we allowed to take classes at MICA, too? I'd love to take an illustration class.

Mark, Stella won't be getting a complex any time soon- we have a friend painted a HUGE painting of her and we have that hanging up in the apartment. It's above the cabinets in the kitchen and it appears as though she is surveying her kingdom. She's the queen and she knows it. :-)

I just don't want to deal with cutting it and all that crap. It brings back nightmares from my last job where they (stupidly) thought it was a good idea to print everything in-house, including 20-page booklets. Guess who was stuck not only designing and writing said booklets, but also fighting with the piece of crap printing, assembling, folding and stapling them? Yeah. Me. And they didn't listen to me when I told them how much it was actually costing them to print in-house versus sending it off to a printer.

But what did I know? I was just "Marketing Girl" who got flowers for secretary's day (just like every other woman who worked in the office, secretary or not-obviously, I was not). Seriously. True story.

I'm positive. I talked to the Motion Graphics instructor, who said that Media Design focuses on concept (and the class description is a little confusing), not software and concept (you can use iMovie or whatever). Motion graphics is flash. I think Stacey took it last fall, so you could talk to her, too.

WTH? Move the island?? Good grief. And suddenly, the island is days ahead of real world time when before (when they launched the rocket) it was 30 minutes behind. Clearly time and space are completely relative on the island.

Did you also notice that Horace said he'd been dead for 12 years? Danielle's been on the island for 16. How did she survive the purge? There's something weird going on there.

I actually think the writing course is going to be more work than the typography class. I just decided I'd rather take the writing class when it's offered and fits my schedule. I'll take typography in the spring since it will probably be easier to fit into my schedule because it's usually offered in multiple timeslots. No Saturday classes. Ever. Again.

Stacie-
It's hard to say if I feel like the fully fleshed out design will work. It needed more than just text to fix it, but overall, I think the concept could work. But then again, I'm not the one grading these assignments. I think I'll play around with a few different ideas. It would be nice to get it down to a smaller size so I could print on better paper.

Agreed. That Flash project sucked away all of my time and my comp for this booklet was nothing short of pathetic and thrown together.

I actually made a few changes to this design after I posted it (I can't help myself). Now I have to print and assemble it again, but that isn't too bad (shockingly). And I still have to pick up some beads and ribbon to bind it. I'll try to take a picture when I'm finished (hopefully no later than 7pm tonight).

I did redesign my blog. The only thing I used as a template was the three column (it's just easier than coding it myself). I determined (and coded) the colors and designed the banner in Photoshop using my own photography. :-) Thank you for the compliment! I'm glad you like it.

Oh, I know they smell. My mom lives across the street from a huge chicken farm. I'm from Lancaster County, remember? I'm very familiar with all the farm smells. :-)

I wonder if only 4 chickens would smell that horrific? Of course, I have to make sure I'm allowed to have them in whatever city I live in (word has it, according, to Sunset magazine, that lots of towns and cities in Cali allow chickens).

Can you explain how you wouldn't be protected under hate crime legislation? My understanding is that heterosexuals who are attacked for being straight (and such crimes have happened, occasionally, if you look at the stats) are just as protected as gays. Thus, whether you identify as heterosexual, ex-gay, gay, bisexual, etc., if that particular feature is the reason for your attack, it falls under the purview of hate crimes.

Maybe you can explain how you think that's incorrect--I've browsed your blog and haven't seen it outlined. (Though if I've missed it, point me to the link...)

Well, I for one would welcome you as part of a GLBT"X", as long as the X isn't telling the other letters that they need to move their position in the alphabet (and conversely, the GLBTs shouldn't be telling the X that they should move).
Ultimately, the alphabet soup really should represent all of humanity, and so an X (or H, for "hetero"?) would work quite nicely.

Anyone starting to see what’s happening here?

When it was revealed that Petraeus would give an exclusive hour-long interview on FOX after his first day of testimony, we knew that his report would be more fixed than one of Bob Barker’s cats and was designed solely to fulfill Bush’s grand Iraq strategy: stall so Bush can run out the clock and have another president clean up his mess.

The fake controversy over MoveOn’s ad showed how desperately republicans want to avoid any meaningful debate about Iraq, what our goals are, and how to get out. They’d rather scold four million MoveOn members over an ad than give our troops the down time they need and get the US out of a war that the majority of Americans no longer support.

And now this: FOX will be airing a one-hour special on Petraeus this weekend. Following Bush’s lead, the entire republican party has decided that the only way they can avoid their responsibility for the Iraq war is to hide behind Petraeus’ sloping shoulders. In a press conference the other day, Bush claimed that attacking Petraeus was somehow the same as attacking the integrity of American soldiers, despite the fact that the MoveOn ad only addressed Petraeus, and he was the lone soldier to present cooked numbers to Congress that day.

So this is the republican line: questioning Petraeus, his integrity, and his strategy is un-American and insults soldiers serving and dying in Iraq. Petraeus, not Bush or the republicans, knows how to win the Iraq war, and is ready to lead the way to victory. Questioning him keeps us from winning. Keeping soldiers there indefinitely is Petraeus' plan, not Bush's or the republicans'.

GAHHHHH! Only in America can you take a case that clearly violates civil rights, is clearly racially biased, is clearly and utterly about race and claim that it is REVERSE RACISM! Only Fox News can get away with such a ridiculous remark.

Let me just address the self loathing Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, because his complete and utter attempts to drum disregard racism entirely are laughable.

#1. The Activists protesting in Jena, LA are themselves racists – This he knows because why? They are calling for more reasonable charges for 6 young men, some of whom were not even involved in an altercation with another student? Since when is fighting for civil liberties racist? Is Martin Luther King a racist?

#2 – DA Reed Walters may have been talking to all off the students when he said he could end their lives with the stroke of a pen: Yes Rev. Lee, he may have been, and the world also maybe flat. The DA showed up at the school AFTER the black students held a protest, an peaceful protest under the “white” tree. There’s nothing more terrifying to a town of 3000 – predominately white citizens when the young intelligent black people stand up for themselves, better nip that in the bud.

#3 – Six black students were attacking one black student that had nothing to do with the nooses – It has been repeatedly stated that these six men were rounded up and accused because of their proximity to the fight. I surely hope that Rev. Lee doesn’t happen to be around the next time the police are racial profiling for a homicide. Who knows, you might get tossed in the paddy wagon with the rest of the degenerates.

Fox, how dare you even allow this question to be asked? But then again, would we expect anything less from a network that repeatedly seeks to sensationalize and point out injustices to the white and privileged?

FOX censored Sally Field's anti-war comments during her acceptance speech at the Emmys.

Some people want to claim it's because she said "god damn", but clearly FOX has no qualms airing "god damn" cause on a recent FOX News program they aired it 5 times in the span of a couple of minutes.

Oh, and the FCC ruled that "goddamn" is perfectly acceptable on broadcast television.

FOX just didn't want you to hear what Sally said, and the majority of Americans already know, that "if mothers ruled the world there'd be no goddamn wars in the first place."

Seriously, since when has anyone given a damn about a newspaper ad? Or any advertisement at all? There wouldn't be this much attention for a Super Bowl commercial featuring Kevin Federline exposing Janet Jackson's boob at a dogfight.

The hysterical republican and media reaction to MoveOn's "Petraeus or Betray Us" ad truly illustrates how idiotic republicans want the discussion on Iraq to be. The fact that republicans had more to say about a newspaper ad — and that's all it was — than the content of the supposedly pivotal Petraeus testimony that was supposed to validate their failing, counter-productive surge/escalation "strategy" also illustrates how republicans have little interest in getting America out of the clusterfuck royale we call the Iraq war. It also cements the fact that republican hypocrisy is limitless, their priorities are whacked, and their only solution to the Iraq war is to stall and misdirect. They'd rather talk about a newspaper ad.

I have no problem with MoveOn's ad, though I think they could find much better ways to spend their money. And I think they did a good thing in trying to tell Americans not to trust Petraeus because it was already known that his testimony would be based on falsified numbers to create the illusion that the escalation is working. In fact, a poll conducted before the testimony showed that most of America shared this sentiment, with 53% believing that Petraeus would "exaggerate" (meaning LIE) about the effectiveness of the escalation. MoveOn wasn't representing the fringe — it was representing the majority, just like they represent the majority of Americans when they call for an end to this war. The only thing MoveOn should apologize for is not realizing the depth of republican desperation to shift attention away from their continuing support for the Iraq debacle and America's Worst President Ever.

To laugh at the ridiculousness, to scream at the outrageous or to... Well fox went to new lows in their analysis of Petraeus' testimony last week. When our friends at Media Matters let us know that they had 7 to 1 analysts in favor of escalation, it was hard to believe, even for FOX! 22 minutes supporting the escalation and only 3 and half against it. They went to such great lengths, they even cut away to Ann Coulter when Democrats questioned Petraeus!

Bill had an idea to show all this in 90 seconds, so he and Jonathan jumped right into it. Then we argued amongst ourselves for two days about what we should do about it? What could we ask, encourage, motivate folks to do. Yelling at the TV screen not being a desired option.

So we throw the question to you, our activists and media observers. What should be done about FOX? And given this ridiculous imbalance, should we encourage liberals and Democrats to stop going on FOX until the rules are fair, the deck is not stacked?

esta claro de dnd viene los sudamericanos, de las colonias, ya que la sangre indígena era débil ( poca mezcla y todo el cuento que ya sabemos, ejemplo: los pigmeos). Asi podemos ver grandes diferencias entre chilenos y argentinos (los comparo porque se odian).

Lo que queria decir, Javi, es que los sudamericanos(peruanos,ecuatorianos...etc y los que se parecen a esos, no a los argentinos, mexicanos,uru...etc) que solemos ver en internet, son todos como tontos, todos los post que veo en mil paginas parece que los escribe la misma persona, parece q no tienen personalidad, con la misma infelicidad y complejos (si lo sabe todo el planeta), y aburre que parezca que no se enteran de nada.

Para el español, un tio que habla como el culo, que no se le entiende, que le dice gilipolleces, que no tiene cultura y menos respeto al dia a dia, resumiendo, otra cultura, le cae muy mal.

Encima si a su propio pais viene la autentica gentuza, ya ni ten cuento.

No soy de derechas pero cada dia les odio un poquito mas. De hecho como me pasan cosas todos los dias, acabo generalizando, asi que digo y opino, que el sudamericano medio (peruanos, ecuatoriano y similares) son un poco cortitos, por no decir subnormales, inconscientes y encima se creen lo contrario. Pero total que podemos decir de gente que no saca a su pais adelante, que tiene los dirigentes que tiene...

I think you misread the proposal. First they triage to see if the presenting complaint is an emergency. If it is an emergency, you're admitted no problem. If it ISN'T, you're told to go home or pay up.

The sorting is based on urgency. The "choking up money" is only if it is not an emergency situation. Ideally, nobody will be paying a fee upfront...because only emergency cases will be admitted.

I think it is a great idea. I used to work in an ER and it was dumbfounding when people were told "It's not an emergency, it will be hours until you can be seen, just go home and rest" only to see them decide to wait it out. These kind of abuses bring down care outcomes for other patients. If there are no beds/rooms available in the ER, what happens to the guy with a massive laceration that requires stitches? He has to wait until the guy with the tummy-ache feels better. In the meantime, the critical period for stitching passes and all you can do is dress the wound. Kinda a crappy way to let the cookie crumble, eh?

I think the triage is a great idea, mainly for one point that the 2nd anonymous poster almost touches on but overlooks.

ERs are a horrible place to be. It's tiring, uncomfortable, and takes hours to get anything done. Nobody I know *wants* to be in an ER. The ones that present are generally worried that something is seriously wrong. That or they're the regular frequent-fliers-every-Sunday.

If you're in the former group and someone tells you after triage it's not urgent, then you should be happy you're not going to waste 4 hours waiting to be seen. And if it is urgent, you'll be happy that the wait isn't extended by non-urgent cases.

Oh, be careful of the police fund-raising ones. Apparently there are quite a few scammers. I got one of those a few months ago -- they kept trying to badger me to pledge by credit card b/c a check was too inconvenient...

My personal nemesis is some Sprint call center that keeps trying to upsell me on my current contract. I calmly explain that I pay just 30$ a month for 500 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited text messaging, and unlimited data (SERO plan). If they could give me a better deal I'd love to hear it. Surprisingly, they actually try to offer me an extra 100 minutes a month for 20 bucks.

I forgot where, but I had read a comment from someone who was initially an investment banker and decided to go into medicine. He said he was astonished at the work/effort he had to put in during his training. Even as an investment banker, he hadn't been exposed to the constant stresses and work of being a resident. I thought that was really saying something.

People that rage on physician dissatisfaction with pay really have no concept of what goes into the training. They assume you're just innately smart and that's how you got the job. As a medstudent, I have less time now than I did in undergrad -- where I was a full-time student working a full-time job!

It doesn't end there either. I know when I finally start a career, I'll be working at least 60 hrs/week in the hospital, not counting work done at home.

90k/yr for 60-80 hours a week? I could make more money tending bar with none of the schooling or debt!

Great week of recipes. Very similar to what we make around here! We are gluten free (celiac!) and low sodium, little to no dairy.

In fact we have thrown out the salt now for 9 months. Any food that is not fresh (canned etc) that I buy must be low sodium or not have any added salt. It was tough for the first month but now we eat completely without adding to any recipes.

Have you considered not adding salt to your recipes? When you buy canned beans or tomatoes do you buy them with no salt added?

As salt is found naturally in all fresh food, it is quite easy to maintain the appropriate salt levels your body needs without adding actual salt to your cooking. The herbs and spices (mostly fresh) that I cook with now make the food sing! And I seriously think it awakens those deadened (by too much salt) taste buds to come alive again!

$50? That's a deal I couldn't pass up either. I drove a 2-door Cavalier and almost killed myself trying to get my kid in the backseat. And forget about it - on a windy day trying to keep the heavy door from smashing into the car next to me was near impossible. I think 2-door cars were made for people with no plans to really use the backseat.

That quote at the end is great. So sorry your family is in the middle of drama like that. My extended family lives and breathes in it. Which is why I haven't seen or spoken to them in years. It's always sad when that happens. My daughters will probably grow up never meeting any of them.

Sounds like the house across the street from my parents house. It went from 20 years with a family that screamed as their preferred form of communication to a guys frat house with new residents each year. It is very loud, unkempt and a general boil on the rest of the street.

I'm glad my parents didn't live directly next to it, though. I can only imagine what they'd shake out right in front of our window...
