Really? When was the last time you've met a Harvard student who was raised on food stamps in the projects?
This is not meant as a personal attack, but if people in the lowest 5% income at Harvard can afford an apartment in the LES during the summer or couture on a monthly basis, they should consider themselves relatively wealthy and part of the middle class. I surmise that those who truly fall within the lowest income bracket in the US are rarely admitted into Harvard.

Re: Equal Access: Harvard 1, Yale 0

There's no need to be condescending and technical. I am well aware of the difference between haute couture and pret-a-porter. However, much like the misuse of the word "anti-social" in lieu of "asocial" has made the former acceptable, couture is considered to encompass pret-a-porter as well as haute couture to the general population, though not to the ranks of Suzy Menkes and Carine Roitfeld. But kudos to you for preserving a definition that is somewhat depasse. I suppose you claim the title of Bee Shaffer at Harvard?
Your rant aside, perhaps you should focus on the argument at hand.

Re: Nashuatelegraph.com: Teachers contract gets thumbs-down

Instead of strikes, they have the Public Employee Labor Relations Board.

Re: Facebook: The Backlash

I will give Mark some credit, but mostly LUCK IMO, for getting Facebook to where it is today. Again, don't give those 2 credit for where Google is today, that credit goes to the CEO Eric Schmidt. If Larry and Sergey had been successful initially, their technology would have been acquired by Yahoo or other big companies. And I heard Larry and Sergey were vehemently opposed to advertising initially, they wouldn't know how to build a business even if it bit them in the ass. IMO, Google is pure evil and seek to dominate everything in its path and then some.

Re: Facebook: The Backlash

Fred, with all due respect, that's a very small sample you have. The reason why Facebook is valued at $15B is the industry perception that they have untapped potential when it comes to advertising to their users. Companies like Coca-Cola, and now Overstock and Travelocity, pulling out is a big sign that the perception has changed dramatically and will likely deteriorate. Even if Facebook completely reverses itself now and implements full opt-out, the damage is already done. While the users may be happier, it doesn't help Facebook's valuation because they aren't the ones paying the bills.

Re: Facebook: The Backlash

Just to play devil's advocate, here's a different perspective from Facebook users in their 20s, also considered a core user base,
http://www.alleyinsider.com/2007/12/hey-faceboo...

See the comment at the end from Dan Frommer, a 25 year old avid facebook user.

Re: Facebook: The Backlash

If only I had a penny every time I heard a teenager claiming to be a facebook entrepreneur, I would be rich by now. So in reality there is no dichotomy here or for that matter here: 'Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it's a game, all right--I'll admit that. Having such a group of rich friends surely must have taken time to cultivate but clearly all that arse kissing has proved worthwhile and with your garlic flair and charm that was easy.

Although I think your hard work starts now because you have taken money from "friends" and they trust you to return it with a successful sale of seesmic. So no pressure then, just your reputation.

In launching seesmic and raising the money you proved two things.

1. It is more about who you know and not what you know. Seesmic is an ok solution technically in search of a mass market but somehow people have given you $6m to show it can return $600m. There are better ideas out there that will not get this level of funding.

2. It is where you live that matters. The names you drop in the post above show that you have to be in the "in-crowd".

I do wish you well and now wonder who will buy you. The question is why did Sam reject it?

As for the sponsor monies. Clive Gringas Director at Olswang and/or Judy Gibbons at Accel will both confirm that all the sponsor monies were given directly to TCUK not Sam.

See the TCUK site and you will see the Olswang advert. Hard to come back from that as you have already deployed a lot of the fund's capital, even when better deals came along in later years. We have received $.65 on each dollar invested (capital fully called as of this year), and I doubt we will get much more. The fund reports claim "top quartile" performance, and the managers (unbelievably) mention that they are among the top performers in the top quartile for 1999 era funds in every report, even though they are under water on the fund, like this should make it easier to take.

Re: Around the web - Dec 2, 2007

The one in the post, and yes, its off by default.
