in 2008/07/16/evil-social-media/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Weird. My official Mashable login is broken. I think the email is no longer good. (How do I fix that?)
Believe me, I hadn't exactly intended to post on it, but after my conversation with Loren, I felt there was something much bigger out there, and I wanted to at last raise the notion up.
Thanks for the further thoughts, Mark. You go a long way towards making Mashable a HUMAN website. Tools are great, but thinking, feeling humans run them.

in The Dual Mandate of PodCamp on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
I'm less interested in the actual tools personally. I've left that to people who are still deeply entrenched with making great audio (Matthew Ebel's session comes to mind), and with using the right kind of lighting to get good video (David Tames comes to mind), and even with the basic elements of building community (because we seem to attract community builders by the ton).
Where *I'm* focused now in the PodCamp space probably falls into three areas:
1.) Connecting great established people with interested new people (new to us, but not the world).
2.) Facilitating new ways of learning and conveying the information.
3.) Facilitating even more human networking at these events, so that no one leaves feeling like they don't know someone new.
I know that we see eye to eye on those points, and that you're every bit as passionate about those points.
Someone asked me if we're going to change our event's name. Though I'm not opposed to it, I like that in a very short time, the people we've chosen to surround ourselves with are great examples of the SPIRIT of what we're calling PodCamp.

in Overanalyzing "Read and Comment Day" on mrontemp
Ahh, but I think sharing is a form of commenting. I think you're hitting on something good by making that point. What if text comments aren't enough?
The way I *intended* this to work was to give praise (in the form of comments and attention) to blogs and media that people are creating. But sharing is a kind of praise, no?
You're always making me think. Keep analyzing.

in Ray Ozzie delivers with Live Mesh on Scobleizer
First, great post. Truly good stuff. When I read your "get off my lawn" teaser earlier, I was eager to see the reveal, but I've been at the New Comm Forum thing all day without the real web (re the mobile web? It's still not *really* here).
As a very long time Mac guy who still appreciates what MSFT is doing in some arenas, I'm really excited about this as a possibility. I want the borders to be open, but that might (should?) come later, because if I were Ozzie, I'd want my house in order before inviting over the neighbors.
I support the learning experience and what this will teach others who might choose to implement something based on what Mesh teaches the world.
At moments like this, I wonder if Ozzie is speaking from him position, or from his passion. If B, this is something amazing. And I have no way to judge or know.
Thanks, Robert.

in Why PodCamp Boston 3 asks you to sponsor it for $50 on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
Just to reiterate what Chris said, we did PodCamp because we liked the BarCamp idea, but had our own spin. You can do it, too. Quick rundown of what's needed:
* Venue - we picked places that had good wifi, were indoors, etc.
* A/V - nice to have, not necessary, but nice to have a screen projector, etc.
* People - yep.
That's it. Go run events!

Velvet ropes. Tighter functions. A better analog to the world I really want, not the world that was built for me to populate.
This shit breaks fast, and will break more. Twitter with 5000 to wade into? Yeah. It's like that cliche psychic in comics when she can't shut them all out any more.

I've thought for the longest time that the future isn't in Twitter, MySpace or Facebook, but niche social networks. I don't think those things will completely go away, but we'll depend on them less and less. Hopefully, these "velvet rope" (to steal your term for it) networks will start providing tools that are better suited for specific types of information.

in Why blogging software error messages are so 20th century on mrontemp
This relates to what Arrington went through with his cable provider, and something I started to talk about on my blog this morning with regards to whether or not businesses need to consider social media. I'm starting to think that businesses ( their customer service legs, in this case) need to evolve. We're not just on phones and email any more. So where are they?
Just a thought that's developing.

in The Next Chapter on LOL: Life of Leo
I guess I'm 100-something comments late on this, but hey, better late than never.
Deconstructing TV is the right way to go. You KNOW how to do TV, and you know the results that await (good and bad). We don't know what will happen in the new thing (whatever we end up calling it). We know Pirillo and Scoble and Jeff Pulver and all kinds of interesting folks are trying things.
I'm going to bank some of my money on your horse in this race. Knock 'em dead, Leo.

in The Problem With Social Networks: No Money on Social Times
Velvet ropes, baby. The reason there's no money is that we're only just starting to make the tools. We haven't really built the "serving suggestions."
LinkedIn is making money. They can stand to make even more. They need only realize a few things about their mission and they could be rolling in it.
Facebook? Oh, I have my theories, most of them dark.
Velvet ropes and nichemining.

I think many variations on the theme exist. To me, if the first thing a visitor sees is new content, it makes you come back. To others, perhaps a "framing story" is a good first step.
I'm now also anxious to see what you get from the experiment. : )

Nice to see you share something about yourself like that. I didn't know. I do know that it's tough to party like a rock star for any duration and come out the other side okay. To that end, I'm glad you're who you are now, and happier the more I get to know you.
