I would bet that 8-word search strings are mostly a) people looking for the source of a story, b) checking for sites that have scraped your content, c) trying to access very specific technical support information. From a marketing perspective, none of these are prospects.

Very helpful post, Jacob. Once you identify the main competitors, do a followup search on site:(competitorurl) and you'll see how many pages are on that site. That gives you the second factor you need to be aware of to figure out how to compete effectively.
