in Do they get it? (How a Democrat ends up voting Republican) on YBPGuide
Maybe I missed something. Was this an ad for Fox News? More on that later...

So in summary... Hillary lost because of sexism. Barack won because he and the media used sexism. You're supporting Barack because your mom and cousin might get mad at you if you don't, and your vote doesn't even matter anyway because of where you live. John McCain gets cool points (dang, haven't heard that one in a while) because he said he was cool with Hillary and acknowledged sexism that worked against her. Fox News is awesome, and Geraldine Ferraro comes with that real talk. Is that everything?

How about the racism Barack encountered? How did he get past that in order to win? Let me guess... Was that negligible in comparison to what Hillary went through? Ok, fine...

If Barack weren't the FIRST black candidate, you wouldn't vote for him? If you lived in Michigan, you wouldn't vote for him? Oh, pointless hypotheticals? Ok, fine...

The "Hillary or bust" voters are easy pickings for the Republican party. Doesn't it seem obvious that McCain would play up his connection with and sympathy for Clinton in order to gather support for himself? Isn't that just the political machine talking?

Fox News, eh? Really? The conservative media hub speaks to you and gets you? Seems fair and balanced? I think a fair number of Republicans may feel that way. (gasp) Are you a closet Republican? I mean, no judgment, obviously. If that's where you stand, that's where you stand.

Doesn't Geraldine Geraldine Ferraro think being black in america helps you along the way, and that being a woman holds you back? I guess you didn't find it freakishly ironic that she made a racially insensitive and misguided remark while trying to point out gender-based disrcimination... It makes one wonder how conflicted she must feel about Condi Rice's ascension in the ranks. At the core, Ferraro understands about half of you.

Had Barack lost, cats would've claimed racism. That, too, would have been a weak argument simply because the sexism Hillary encountered was on the same level. Bottom line is, Barack overcame the racism, and Hillary didn't overcome the sexism. That is based on the assumption that racism and sexism were the most challenging factors facing the candidates.

It's ok, you can vote for whomever you want. If big mama won't pass you the potato salad because you didn't vote for Barack, that's HER problem. Well, unless you really like potato salad, but I digress. Just because you're in DC doesn't mean your vote is meaningless. If everyone followed that line of thinking, nothing would ever change. But every four years there's an opportunity to speak and and let your vo-... ok you get the point.

No one cares which channel you watch (that reads a bit more rude than intended) but you can care about the message you send. Hillary worked very hard for your support. It might be good to see which candidate will work hard for your support now. McCain seemingly agrees with you that Hillary rocks. Is really that enough to vote for him? Oh, it is? ummm...

McCain-Rice in '08, b*tches!

in Father Michael Pfleger on YBPGuide
First, I have to ask... Why was big boy just standing behind him, like he was just waiting for something to pop off? Does Father Pfleger have muscle? Wait, was that 8Ball? I think it was!

Second... He shat on Fox News. That reporter lost, big time. I wonder why the interview wasn't cut short.

Third... I have never seen a white person fight so hard to defend a non-white person ever in my life. Seriously, I've seen white people go to bat for non-people (dogs, the environment) pretty aggressively, but NEVER for a non-white person. Yup, I'm sheltered, but still. I'm glad I saw that. It restored my faith in the notion that some people truly are capable of embracing perspectives outside their own ethnicities. (or something...) I'm not saying I am, but, lol.

Fourth... That reporter lost.

Fifth... Are we going to see this interview on television a bunch of times like everything else? lolololol noooope!

Sixth... Wow, he really shat. I haven't seen a white person that mad since Ruben won American Idol.

Let me stop.

in Not Your “Trophy” First Lady?? on YBPGuide
I dunno if Michelle would be the GOAT First Lady; Jackie Kennedy was PRETTY ridiculous in her day. Think about the spin this way: might the comments have been taken out of context? I mean, these women aren't breaking new ground.

It's possible that these women might have been asked, albeit with the purpose of generating certain quotes, how they felt Michelle would be perceived otherwise. The notion that she might be more well-received with lighter skin and/or naturally straight hair is not farfetched. 'Tis still America, last I checked. There's a chance the ladies were being somewhat cynical about the additional scrutiny placed on black women, and that their quotes were miscontrued when removed from the totality of the conversation.

Hopefully people have been exposed to the various studies showing the differences in perceptions and salaries among lighter-skinned blacks versus their darker counterparts. (man, something about that felt reeeally racist, but I'ma keep on...) These studies do well to educate non-blacks, but I would think most black people here in '08 have known that to be the drill for quite some time now.

The only thing I don't like about the conversation is the denouncing of well-to-do black men and their perceived propensity to gravitate towards "pale trophy" wives. WTF is that all about? Yeah yeah I know what it's about, but that's wack. Every brother that marries a non-black woman isn't automatically a sellout or anything, just like every brother that marries a black woman isn't automatically down for the cause.

I mean, who's the sellout... The brother who marries a non-black woman and treats her right or the brother who marries a black woman and beats on her?

(yes, I said Jackie Kennedy)

in The CEO Formerly known as Prince on YBPGuide
I think after that Home Depot CEO got that boatload of cash, the golden parachute as we knew it was definitely in jeopardy.

Hmmm. Peter Wuffli was bumped from UBS this summer. No package. Henry Paulson left Goldman for the government gravy train (although he was at the helm while Goldman was building up a hefty portfolio of bonds backed by various mortagages). But he still got nearly $20 million in a year-end bonus. Stan got the boot with no package, but don't get it twisted... Stan got paid. He was still good for over $150 million because he was able to keep his stock options that hadn't even vested yet. I think Chuck Prince will still get a severance package (albeit modest) because it doesn't appear that he has been recently involved in any questionable dealings. Can't say the same for Bear Stearns CEO nor Stan... But I think CEOs are well taken care of upon their exit, even if it doesn't involve cold hard cash. Maybe they get to keep unvested options or access to the private jet. lol they'll be aight-

shawty, i don't know if any of the real-world examples you mentioned were in fact stranger than skin-tone. eye color, weight, hair color and shoe size are definitely strange... and kinda dumb, too. lol... if you keep it at an extremely broad level, you might be able to get away with it. that's why gender-based promotions normally don't face any backlash.

dude prolly coulda bypassed all this by simply giving out free passes to light-skinned women. good ol' hindsight, eh?

but i think he would have faced similar backlash by doing a dark-skinned promo. the spirit of it still harkens back to the way we were once divided and valued based on our skin tone, and that's something that we as a people are trying to bury for good (i think...)

Well said, Eugene. People tend to become too outspoken after receiving degrees and certifications. Too much talking, and not enough listening.

I think that's Greg Oden at the very bottom of the picture. That cat is 31 years old. Trust...

in obama’s ancestors possible slave owners on YBPGuide
Ummm, Obama rocks and all, I guess, but I just wanna see how cats act when there are two seemingly viable Black candidates are trying to run (lol clearly Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson just didn't count). I mean, wouldn't we take a step back and make an effort to evaluate the candidates for their qualifications and character? Oh wait, isn't that what we're supposed to be doing anyway? Oops...

Let's work on getting to the point where we pay closer attention to the people who want to represent us in government. It's too easy to look at race, gender, or party affiliation.

YBPs, a vote for not-Obama doesn't necessarily mean you're uncomfortable with non-White leadership. If that were the case, one could also say that your vote for Obama means you're just another brainless voter going with the flow.

Just vote for what's most important to you. And I emphasize "VOTE!"

in Are we tired of rap music? on YBPGuide
(Disclaimer: As I type, I'm currently listening to a mixtape from Little Brother)

I haven't purchased an album of any sort since high school. I will playfully do the Chicken Noodle Soup in brevity, even in publicly. I snap my fingers and do the pool palace without shame. Drugs, bling, violence, and misogynism
are omnipresent in the most popular songs of the genre. At the same time, this is nothing new. There might be a little more of it now, but it's still more of the same. Mos Def and Talib Kweli still operate in the background (shouts to Talib's recent performance on Def Poetry Jam) and groups like Little Brother remind us that it's all about dope beats and dope rhymes. The biggest issue still remains: Our youth - and those who don't have any other exposure to Black culture - are only shown one element of hip-hop(or rap, or Black music, whatever let's not split hairs on that topic.)

I just don't wanna call another man's hard work crap because he's not necessarily talking about something positive or something that I can relate to. I DO think it's crap that our representation in the music industry seems so lopsided, but I am NOT sorry for bumping Young Jeezy in my ride. We all like what we like, whether we're trained to like it or not. But here's to broadening the horizons of those who don't know what other options they have when it comes to hip-hop.
