in iPhone stuffing Blackberry with larger global smartphone share on Mobile Industry Review
Has any new computing platform taken off this quickly? I mean, we are only 4 months into the App Store and already there are well over 3000 apps available, at least 400 of those are quality applications available at a reasonable price.

in The Nokia N96: Face the Task on Mobile Industry Review
At the weekend, I too took the 96 in one hand and the 95 8GB in the other, compared the two and came the roughly the same conslusions as you. The true Nokia Ninja, the 95 8GG, is much better device.
I'll just chime in with a couple of other observations;
The screen now looks low-res, 240 x 320 has been stretched too far this time.
The speakers produce a horrible sound, yes there is stereo separation, but honestly, I get better audio quality out of the iPhone 3G!
Did Nokia 'Jump the Shark' with the 96? Quite possibly.

in 6.9 million iPhones sold in Q4 2008 on Mobile Industry Review
And given that Apple very often double sales during Q1 there is a real possibility that they will be number 2 within 3 months ... And, if the iPhone follows the pattern set by the iPod they should be the worlds largest supplier of phones (in terms of revenue) by 2010.
If it was any other company, I'd say, 'not a chance', but Apple are on fire right now, so who knows? Exciting times, that's for sure!

in Ooh - isn’t the iPhone a bit like Microsoft on Mobile Industry Review
Wow! I feel like been beamed back to 1995!
Okay now listen. There *is* still a big difference between OSX and Windows. Mac OS gets out of your way quicker than Windows, is less prone to hanging and still has no viruses to speak of (and no, it has nothing to do with being a minority OS). Plus, when you buy a new Mac you get the easiest music creation app on the planet (Garageband), and one of fastest video edited apps available (iMovie) for free...
... ah, forget it!! I've had this conversation so many times over the last 15 years or so... Some people just don't like Apple products, I do, and I can't get my head around any one who doesn't. That's all I can really say on the matter, that and the fact that of the 16 people that I personally know have gone from Windows to OSX in the last 8 years, only 1 has ever gone back to Windows and even then it was only because he uses Office and plays Champ Manager all day long!
I use OSX, Win 2K, WinXP and Vista on a daily basis, for everything except gaming and syncing to a Nokia the Mac is better, not just bit better but considerably better.
Oh, and for the record, 2.01 puts the iPhone back to being a rock solid pocket computer, not bad for 3 weeks work. How long did it take Nokia to 'fix' the N95?
Rant over. ^_-

I'm not yet convinced that there is an awful lot of 'power' in the Symbian foundation power play.

I was thinking about these ideas the other day:
http://tinyurl.com/5cdwxs
In short, if Nokia did become the 'global leader in computing within 5 years', it would be one of the most shocking developments in the computing industry since... well, since it began!

in What’s so great about the iPhone? on Mobile Industry Review
It's the most humanist bit of mobile technology I have ever owned, and for that alone I respect Steve Jobs and his team of 'organic carrot cake' eating engineers!
It's not about the bits, it's about how the bits are put together. Isn't that obvious by now? How many iPhone customer satisfaction surveys do some people have to read... We are tired of having to shape ourselves around the technology rather than the technology being shaped to fit us. It's time for a change.

Totally jealous! I've just come back from Tossa de Mar (yes, it's really called Tossa!), I spent quite a few hours snorkeling, it was bliss...
I manage to capture some underwater footage on my N95. I'll post it later.
Looking forward to seeing your Flip footage.

Band by Moo Cow Music can certainly be defined as content creation on the iPhone. Sure, it's not video or photos but it's certainly creative!

in N95 vs iPhone - Part 2: The Web on Symbian in Motion
Zach, I feel the same way as you... I swap between the same 2 devices, but it's the iPhone that's with me the most. For the things I do regularly, i.e. Email, Browsing, Music and Video playback, hey, even Stopwatch and Google Maps... the iPhone is king.
It rarely stands in the way of what I want to do... Much like the Mac really.

Clarity through refinement, that's what's it's all about...
Russ, this very blog post in itself stands as a perfect example of the power of clarity through refinement. As you yourself said "I feel like I figured it out now, which makes me happy." That is what most people love about the iPhone - someone finally figured out what all this technology means, and that makes them happy. They may not even have a use for many of the abilities of a modern phone such as the iPhone and N95, but the fact that they now clearly know what it can do and how it can benefit them makes them happy.
Great post Russ, one of your best!

It's all about respect, does this application, website or service care about me enough to make an effort to look nice?
If you have friends coming at stay you tidy up a bit, make the place look appealing. If you're going to meet a group of people for the first time you dress nicely and generally make an effort. You have respect for them and you want them to like you.
Geeks commonly need help in this department, both on screen and off screen! (^_-)

Oh, and customer satisfaction surveys? Not worth the paper they're written on. Self-Justification made the whole concept of customer satisfaction surveys obsolete years ago.
