I've never really seen the distinction between what I would call "anger" crimes and "hate" crimes. The motivation seems not as important as the intent and the action itself. Layering "hate" proscriptions on top just seems like imposing a penalty for "bad thinking".

p.s. Good to see you writing again.

If their churn rate shoots up because of the weird design choices, they'll react. Perhaps they think real time will be a differentiator for them. Maybe, but aside from a small population of hardcore users, I can't think who will invest the time to make the new design work for them. I sure as hell won't. I've already noticed I'm spending more time on Twitter since the FF beta started.

There's more to him than the metrosexual thing (which, in its original incarnation was I think about the queering of "straights"). I don't think he's reactionary as much as realistic. It's still too early to tell how successful male marriages will be.

YM should be private subscription only. It's written for just a small band of gawker obsessives. You don't want to be a member of that club anyway.

Got it beat. Last week I dreamed I *was* Laura Petrie, trying to teach Millie Helper how to make a cherry pie. The dream made me very happy and I remembered when I was in it that I took great pleasure from looking down at what I was wearing.

Well, back in the days of the Gay Liberation Front (before my time, but my mother told me about it) the politically correct thing to believe was that gayness was a political choice. I've always thought the flight to a biological "apology" was politically regressive.

aatombomb I wrote this 3 years ago: "Gay civil rights are therefore not really a push for the acceptance of an idea that we already embody. It is a transformative ideology, a healing process, an idea that has not yet become a reality. The ironic requirement for achieving victory is an idea that most people believe belongs on the other side: faith. We have to convince ourselves and the world around us that we are capable of becoming fully actualized human beings."

I don't often agree with some of your points, but value your contribution as a countervailing force to the knee-jerk hero worship of Obama.

That said, if you really want to quit FF and remove all your data this is the link: http://friendfeed.com/account/delete

I hope you don't use it.

movie (The Exorcist) makes its failure all the more painful.

Jeez, guys, Stats 101. The mean of $75K for 100K+ bloggers is skewed by the very few with huge audiences and incomes. Check the median: $200. If Technorati published the distribution you'd see that most bloggers with 100K+ uniques are making next to nothing.

Steven,

How incredibly kind of you to review my humble yet ingenious site! ;-)

I'm only sorry that I haven't been able to post recently due to a desktop system failure that I've just about recovered from. But new things are coming...

I'll take your comments to heart and tweak the font size and layout issues you raise. And, Rarst, if you could say *where* you are located I can investigate the access issue. After a couple of hacking incidents, I've put in place fairly restrictive htaccess restrictions. Maybe too severe.

in Some thoughts on a Microsoft after Gates on Shooting at Bubbles
Steve,

This is an excellent heartfelt post that goes beyond the usual, tired whining about "Micro$oft" being "evil" and unfair to competitors by pointing up that their current situation is unfair... to Microsoft. Just as with AT&T before the breakup, an enormous fund of creativity is locked up inside an organization charged with maintaining the status quo. The challenge for Ballmer is to reinvent something that (despite the critics) works almost too well. As a founder, I doubt he can do it, or at least he would have to be one very exceptional human being if he could. But perhaps Ray Ozzie can -- if he's allowed to.
StevenHodson's picture
StevenHodson I don't think Ballmer will be able to. As for Ozzie he might be able to solidify the company's online dysfunctions but that won't do anything for the Windows platform. That I think is going to take someone with a lot of guts and vision which I don't see Sinofsky as having because I think he is too locked into the corporate culture and saving the consumer Windows needs different thinking.

see if that really fixed the error. I'm using Firefox 3 which doesn't seem
to support firebug...

in Web Discussions: Leaving The Instigator Out on A VC
Bloggers certainly get value from increased exposure that fragmented conversations provide -- it may even make up for the loss of direct value of seeing commentary on their sites. But there is still an issue about brands being subsumed by other brands...
