Hmmm too late to read I.G. article now but I have really liked some of the work from the studio although disliked others. I wasn't so keen on the animation in Kill Bill Volume I although their are similarities in style between that and GITS I.

They forgot ^^;; in the Japanese smilies, you need that emotion there is no other way to say it.

In general an interest collection of links that are very you :p

In general people are lazy, if there are no nearby bins they throw it on the floor. Also once one person has thrown things on the floor the place is no longer tidy and you feel less guilty about making a mess of what is already messy. It is a shame they made such a mess but not surprising I am more surprised they didn't have more people litter picking. Littering picking isn't actually that bad once you get past the 'yuck' factor and in general the litter at these events is only drinks bottles and food wrapping so nothing too bad. I think you are being over cynical about everything it sounds like it was fun.

What does our student card do that is so brilliant other than let us in the library and the numerous clubs around Durham? It does have an expiry date of around 30th June on the year you leave, not that it is printed in big letters so people wouldn't notice. I am wondering what joys I am missing out on at the moment.

Hmm, I know you aren't a Kurosawa fan however I do remember being very annoyed with one change in The Magnificent Seven (adapted from Seven Samurai). Through out both films there is a romantic relationship between the youngest saumurai/cowboy and a girl from the village. In the end of Seven Samurai the girl goes onto reject (well more completely ignore him) upon which the other samurai comments on how they will never be accepted by a society even if they save it. In the Magnificent Seven the girl and the young guy get together yet there is still the comment about lack of acceptance. This really spoils the whole point of the comment and therefore really annoyed me. In general other than Star Wars (watch Hidden Fortress) films made based on an earlier film are nowhere near as good as the original whether they are adpations of old Hollywood films or foreign cinema.

Japanese films seem to have a unique element to them that I don't quite understand. When you watch something like Ring 0 or other titles that I won't name there is something about them that you see as being a product of Japan. I think the way the characters behave in Japanese films is different from the way they do in Western films and therefore some of the behaviour of characters in the adaption of the Ring seemed wrong for the setting however this may just be judging too much on other Hollywood films.

Yes that makes sense, I find the key to writing is to cheat and use the reading passage to help you through also be prepared to make stuff up that is easier to say or not bother telling the whole truth ie instead of saying you study computer science at Durham Univeristy say you are a student at Durham University since the grammar of this sentance is far easier.

Oh, baka dewa arimasen, Nihon-ga wa gatai desu. :D Watashi wa keisanki o wakarimasen demo anata wa keisanki o wakarimasu. Ikasu desu :D

Anyway your vocab is about the same as mine :) I just relax a bit more and know when to translate words. Couldn't do anything without a dictionary.

The key to translation is to look at the whole sentance at once not individual words. You tend to panic too much when coming across a word you don't know while it is often quite easy to guess the word by looking at it in context. The verb is your best hint as to what the sentance is about. Next time try reading the whole sentance then working on it, it makes the translation a lot easier especially when you are unlikely to meet any complex verb forms :)

According to one of the speeches we had yesterday on PET the human brain uses similar parts for reading and listening, in fact from the areas of the brain that are active it seems as though when reading we first turn words into sound and then into something that can be understood (I wasn't cruel enough to enquire as to how it is a deaf person can learn to read). This would suggest that the human mind should be reasonably adept at reading subtitles although I do think it takes some getting used to. When I watched a subbed film afterwards I often can't tell you if the film was subbed or dubbed and will quote the film in English as to me that is what they said. It has problems when learning theme tunes since I learn words that obviously don't fit the tune and then try to sing along to myself.

:D Well I guess he could certainly say he succeeded in making art that didn't look like art.

I remain unconvinced by nearly all of the physics article but don't have enough knowledge yet to dispute much of it. It does remind me of an article in New Scientist ages ago about computers that could work out the answer to any problem instant because once it had worked out an answer it sent it back in time. That way the computer could just check its data bank find it had the answer and never have to work anything out. It was a perfect principal other than the inventor had no idea how to send the answer back in time just that is might be possible theoretically. A theory although fun and exciting is not much use unless an experiment can be performed to test the theory (I would say prove but that would imply I believe a theory can be proved true and I don't, it is only possible to prove a theory to be incorrect). As far as I am aware (and I could be wrong because I have been keeping up with developments less since I have started university) there are currently no predictions made by string theory clear enough to test or that gives solutions that contradict the standard model (although the standard model can’t be said to be a theory of everything). String theory as far I as I remember from what I have read does involve putting in a lot of random constants and physicists do hope to find a theory that explains itself and doesn’t need numbers entered from theoretical research. The other thing with string theory is you are starting to get to a theory that depends so much on abstract mathematics it takes the most advanced super computers in the world to work out the equations and solving them is almost impossible. The other point is although many of the things they suggest are probably theoretically possible according to the laws of physics actually carrying them out would be nearly impossible so I do have to confess I think the Universe and mankind is doomed. This could be tragic but instead of worrying about the end of the universe I would think the delicate balance of the climate required to give life on Earth (i.e. global warming) is a much more serious problem and one that will present trouble far sooner.

I do want to see this because the author (Masamune Shirow) has a brilliant reputation and Ghost In the Shell was a great film. I differ in animation tastes to you so I find something strange about the CG effect particularly as there seems to be an attempt to capture the hand drawn style that doesn't always quite work. It will be interesting to see what the film is like though, given Masamune Shirow's reputation I wouldn't expect it to be completely mindless however nothing deeper or more confusing than Ghost in The Shell of The Matrix.

My theory is the theme is Japan
- The Chinese writing was done by Echo from your Japanese class
- The photo of the leaf was taken on the way back from Teikyo Japanese festival
- The pen is from the Japanese shop Muji
- Tate sometimes displays Japanese art (I am guessing)

Of course the theme could always be art since allot of the shots look artisitc however this seems too boring. Can we have Have I Got News For You style odd one out rounds?

I think it does turn out to be significant in the end. The whole thing is supposedly based around a curse that does have some other effects although goodness knows what. My friend burnt it for me and apparently the last two episodes actually have a plot however half the CDs didn't work.

I love the way the fruits basket synopsis seems to manage to ignore the main part of the 'plot' and your cleverly selected screen shots don't give any more away.
