I've been reading David Bullard's column for years with fair amusement, but am incapable of taking him seriously. Surprized that he's got such a big reaction for attacking blogs.

I actually agree with Sweet Violet here. I checked out her blog and it definitely lends a lot of credibility to what David Bullard was saying in his column last week. In particular:

Many bloggers prefer to remain anonymous and with good reason. The content of their sites is so moronic that even their best friends would disown them if they knew they were the authors.

Inside Facebook notes: "TripAdvisor’s Brian Payea has responded: “This is untrue. Beyond that, we do not have any comment.” Payea would not specifically comment on whether acquisition hasn’t happened or simply that the reported price was inaccurate. Take it for what you will…but for now, though this is not a ridiculous price given the canvas page views and CPMs I would expect Where I’ve Been to be generating, it seems like the first big Facebook app acquisition is still yet to happen."

Hi Elaine,

First of all, forget about the whole roaming nonsense. Switch on an "Away Greeting" and get a SkypeIn number which you can divert to any phone.

A prepaid SIM card that you can put in your phone will cost you R1. (that's $0.10). Yes really. As opposed to the $60 I paid for a T-Mobile SIM card at SFO, or the $25 you'd pay at RadioShack.

Although mobile operators still rip off customers here, prices are a bit different.

- Prepaid calls are $0.20 per minute (actually, they do per second billing here)
- Mobile browsing is $0.20 per MB (T-Mobile USA is $1). (you can easily buy bundles, e.g. 500 MB will cost you $18)
- You do NOT pay for Incoming calls. AFAIK this is a US phenomenon. You'd have blood on the streets if you tried charging people for incoming calls in Africa.

There are 3 mobile operators to choose from. If you're not happy with one, simply get a SIM card from another one. It will cost you $0.10. (+ $10 if you want to keep your old phone number)

What's the legal deal here though? If a building is accessible to the public, does that not inherently imply you could do there anything that is generally considered legal?

I was on Financial Aid and worked after-hours to get myself through university, after my schoolteacher dad went bankrupt trying to start a restaurant, so you could rightly say we've been through some tough times!

Although money doesn't drive me, I am definitely more content now that I have decent medical aid and a small stock portfolio!

The problem with associating money and happiness is that one tends to get confused about what money actually is! Money is simply an additional REWARD for doing something good!

Personally, I like to think I am driven by Impact. I like to see that I'm making the world a better place... so that I (and me and myself) can live in a better world!

I wrote a post today on how it's ironic that Plaxo aimed to be LESS intrusive with their 'acquaintance spam' and ended up being more annoying.
