I've been looking for a way to get my kids' PCs backed up so they don't lose their term papers -- "the hard drive crashed" seems to be the new version of "the dog ate my homework." I tried xDrive and Mozy, but settled finally on Carbonite (<a href="http://www.carbonite.com" rel="nofollow"> Carbonite Online Backup </a>) because it was the simplest and offered unlimited capacity for $50/yr (I only tried it to 55GB). It's worth taking a look at as an alternative if you're looking for something unobtrusive that your mom can use.

Re: 2005/11/28/mozy-online-backup-dont-spam-us-well-spam-you/

I've been using Carbonite -- that gives me unlimited storage space for $49.95 a year. It's not free, but there's no spam, very professional, very simple. I keep telling people about it because it's so simple and foolproof. Since they have one-size-fits-all pricing, they just default to backing up nearly everything, so there's nothing to do except start it. So far no problems, though I was surprised how long it took to back up roughly 60GB. I believe that's a factor of my DSL upload, though. Did not try Mozy, but I need more storage than they offer.

Re: Mozy.com&#8217;s Backup Software is Shit

Definitely Mozy Home. In fact, I still have the subscription and they still have my data from almost a year ago when I uninstalled it. It didn't recover well from being interrupted in the middle of a backup -- often seemed to start all over again. So I finally gave up on it. One of the things I liked about Mozy was being able to pay month-to-month instead of buying a whole year in advance. I don't know how many people care about that, though.
