in How to turn weight gain into weight loss, and a slight change to The Diet on Colin Devroe
Also, it's very important to note that day-to-day figures don't carry much weight (pun intended).

Like Mike said, everything that goes in has to weigh something. In your case you definitely need to be consistent with when you weigh yourself.

I get on the scale every morning, but I try not to think about it when it goes up sometimes. If I'm keeping track of my calories, I know that it's usually physically impossible to have gained weight at certain times. Maybe that pound was a late dinner from the night before, or maybe I've been drinking a lot more water lately.

Day-to-day changes are statistical noise. That's why we only weigh in once a week. Even then, you might not see a huge change from one week to the next. But over a month, the changes might be much clearer.

Being off by 1,000 calories is a big deal, but we're all allowed our slip-ups from time to time. Just don't make a habit of it. Don't be too hard on yourself. Losing the weight is about making a major lifestyle change, and none of us would be here again this year if it was all that easy.

in Weigh in: March 29, 2009 on Colin Devroe
It seems like the first week is always a big jump, doesn't it? I'm in at 209.4 this week.

Are you using Lose It on your iPhone to keep track? I like it quite a bit, but it's got its annoying points, like how you can only use certain units to measure foods in its database and the spell check is disabled for some insane reason when you add a custom food.

It's got a nice feature where you can adjust your daily calories. I'm taking off an extra 100 to speed things along (and so I won't feel bad in case I go over by a few).
Colin Devroe I didn't know about the daily caloric adjustment. I will definitely have to look into that. Bringing it down by 100 or up by 100 is something that a lot of people will probably need to do to find what they think is best for them.

Good work!

in Trailer: Where The Wild Things Are on Colin Devroe
We'll see. Half the trailers these days have exclusive deals with certain sites that are allowed to host them. Yahoo does it all the time. If there's something like that going on, don't expect unofficial versions to stay up too long. As long as they don't order them to be taken down before an official embeddable trailer is released, I won't mind too much.

From what I understand, Spike Jonze really had to fight the studio for the freedom to do it right. I hope it pays off.

Since it's not really practical to sit here watching the trailer over and over again, I'm listening to The Arcade Fire instead.

I have very high hopes for this movie.

Colin Devroe I do too. Now that I did some investigating... and others have told me through IM... this clip was actually on Ellen. So it may not be removed as I said. We'll see.

in Random 60: Reading. on Colin Devroe
Reading anything lengthy is tricky. When I used to ride the subway and PATH every day, it was easier, because I had good amount of time with nothing else to do. I read my fair share of graphic novels and comic books, but the bulk of my reading is on the web. A few hundred items pass through my Google Reader every day, and even though I skim and skip many of them, I do find a few good thing worth reading.

If reading is reading (as opposed to reading books is reading) than I probably read more than I ever have. Sure, the quality is debatable, but it's hard to find the time for quality with an RSS reader than never seems to stop updating!
Colin Devroe I think it might be time to trim the fat on your Google Reader subscriptions. (Not this blog, please.) I think finding a little bit of time, even if only an hour here and there, to read a book is a good exercise in getting away from the screen.

I've got a wedding in September to prepare for.

I'm 214 today, and the goal is 182 by mid-summer. I don't plan to stop there, but I'll wait to set any further goals until I hit the first one.

I actually started about a week ago, so I'm into the mindset already. Let's do this.

Do you mean like stationery? Hit up Staples.

Or do you mean notebooks? Ruled? Unruled? College ruled? Filler paper? Writing paper could mean basically anything.

Colin Devroe Unruled. Loose leaf. I'm going to hit up Staples soon.
Colin Devroe I went to Staples and found something. Not exactly what I was looking for but it will do.

The people ditching the new stuff need to get with it. This is where Apple is going with everything. The tabs up top might be a bit jarring at first, but they make a lot more logical sense up there.

The one interface change that does bug me is the location of the reload button. It's like they're being iPhone-like for the sake of being iPhone-like. Unlike the tabs, it *doesn't* make any more logical sense to be there than where it used to be.
Colin Devroe I find myself "reaching" over to the left for the reload button too, but I do, ultimately, like it better there. Smaller, in place of the loading spinner, etc. I think the current toolbar is an excellent use of space. Which helps a lot on my 13" Macbook.

in LOST Season 5 promotional music video on iTunes featuring The Fray on Colin Devroe
Man, I need to get caught up. They lost me in season three when absolutely nothing happened for the longest time, then I had trouble getting caught up during season 4. Knowing Lost, we'll see season five sometime around next September, so I've got plenty of time.

I challenge you to make weather your next goal. Grab the current conditions from an RSS feed (I'm sure there's got to be one), and if something interesting is happening, match it with a tag, then display the header.

Good list. I'll tell you what's ridiculous though: The fact that Apple does not have a full-size wireless keyboard. I would have bought it long ago. I finally broke down and got a regular Apple wired keyboard this year. It's a fantastic keyboard, and I'm glad they finally got that keyboard onto the MacBook Pro.

Also Coda = Like a party on my screen and everybody's invited.

I should also say that if the rumors are right, and AT&T subsidizes the cost, I'll buy a new one tomorrow, because I'm already planning to give my current iPhone to Jen.

I'm in the same boat as you with the new laptop. My fiancée needs a new computer, and mine works fine, but I could still benefit from an upgrade. Good predictions on the iPhone. What Apple doesn't give you, I think third-party developers will.

My number one need from Apple: Multimedia messaging. If somebody sends me a picture message, I have to go to some silly AT&T Web page and enter an impossibly convoluted random login and password. Every other cell phone out there can handle picture messaging just fine. There's no excuse for Apple not to do it.

Oh, and copy and paste. Every shit cell phone out there can do that too, at least on a limited basis.

in WingFest 2008 was a flop on Colin Devroe
This is pretty outrageous. They should just charge more for admission and then make sure everything is free.

If you ever go to a brew festival, $40 or so is about what you could expect to pay for admission, but they're usually tons of breweries, and then they'll pummel you with food. GOOD FOOD.

I don't think I could make it, but you should seriously consider checking out the brew fest in State College in August. The food probably won't be wings, but it'll be something else and it'll be good. That much is certain. Oh, and the beer will be fantastic.

Check it. http://www.scbrewexpo.com/

in Connect 360 - The best Apple TV alternative? on Colin Devroe
I don't know how I missed that. Still, I think it could be improved. You can only choose one place for movies. I'd like to see the option to choose multiple locations. That would be super.

in Connect 360 - The best Apple TV alternative? on Colin Devroe
I dropped the $20 on Connect 360 after you mentioned it the other day. I tried Rivet a few weeks ago, and the connection was always flaky, and my 360 is hooked up to my Airport Extreme with ethernet.

So far Connect 360 has worked flawlessly. I really wish it could see videos in places other than iTunes or my Movies folder. The majority of my video files are on an external drive. I tried putting both an alias and a symbolic link to my movies in my Movies folder, and neither one worked. I emailed Nullriver about this, so maybe they'll add the feature sooner or later.

So far though, it's $20 well spent.

in Comparing Safari 3.1 and Firefox 3 Beta 4 on Colin Devroe
I haven't clicked over just yet, but the new Developer features in Safari give Firebug a run for its money. Firefox on Windows has AWFUL memory problems. I forgot how bad it was until I went back to having a PC at my new job (don't worry, I have a Mac too). Time to go read.

in Weigh in: Week Forty on Colin Devroe
Good job, man. I'm all for trying to get back into the swing of things. Since the beginning of the year, I'm down about five pounds myself, but it's difficult. Working 55 hour weeks at work and then putting in another 20 hours a week on my own projects makes it hard, yet I've been managing to keep it steady at around 207. Not great, but not terrible.

Lately, I've been very dehydrated. I suspected it myself, and the doctor confirmed it for me. I know it's loaded with sugar, but I've been drinking Gatorade (while watching the calories in it), along with water, and I'm making progress in getting myself back to where I should be.

I've been eating less-- usually just lunch, plus something small for breakfast, like a granola bar, and a small snack in the evening, and not making much progress.

I've identified a few things that will help me in the coming weeks:

1. Spring. I'm dying to take a bike ride, even if I will be dodging traffic in New York.

2. Band Madness. Once this launches, I'll have a lot more time to actually take those bike rides.

3. Staying fully hydrated. I need to actually remember to drink water all day long at work. When you're dehydrated, you're body's not working to its fullest potential.

4. Hard work. Not having time sounds like an excuse, but I'll have to make the time. Part of that involves leaving the office before 10:30 at night. That'll be much more possible in a few weeks.

Here goes nothing...
