The backwoods nature of the fundamental Christian cults that have grown up in this country in place of understanding of the true nature of the physical world--the physical nature of this world, not whatever you think is happening in your own mind--is what is destroying our nation along with the ability to compete internationally.

Voters are uneducated and uninformed. They cannot tell the difference between fiction and fact. In this case the facts are well understood and explained by the many sciences--geology, biology, physics, & chemistry. Because you do not have a grasp on the evidence science presents every day, evidence of how the world works, and because this is being passed on to young students, Americans are suffering from the pox of ignorance that rivals the Taliban. Indeed, some have called this extreme form of Christianity the American Taliban. Fundamentalism that rejects reason, whether the religion is Christian or Muslim or Hindu (or whatever other religion you can think of,) when it turns to fundamentalism and rejects reality, we all suffer. We have suffered enough in this country with the likes of our ignorant president who refuses to support science. We have lost our standing in the world and as a nation have turned our collective back on sound principles of science, science that brought us penicillin and other antibiotics, ideas that provide insulin for diabetics, ideas that save lives.

We must take a stand against religious bigotry and prejudice. We quickly become a nation of ignorant fools without reason and science.

Let's assume that there is an invisible sky-man, why should anyone believe in one version of the story over another? Why be a Muslim or Jew or Christian? Why not believe in Greek or Roman or Norse or Hindu or Native American religions and depictions of God(s)?

Personally, I am incredibly spiritual. I believe in the connectedness of all things and a unification of universal spirit and energy. But to begin putting names and faces and rules on this thing that we all feel is hypocrisy.

Seriously, isn't the whole point of God (or Allah or Zeus or Vishnu) that He is beyond the comprehension of mere mortals? If so, then isn't the very act of ascribing a name and mere human words to Him nothing more than hubris?

Kady The questions you pose concerning the existence of God are really very flimsy. Your belief is based on faith, something you can't see. You can't "prove" a thing. The predictions are debatable. The sky is not a canopy and cannot fall. Animals take care of thier young too, and there are species that are monogamous, just as there are monogamous humans among us. Options with food prove nothing. Gosh, is this all you have? Consider the fact that you are the one who needs to have a god to believe in, since you have this need to believe in the hereafter, since there is so much fear of the unknown.
As for the evangelicals, they make me puke. Palin's candidacy is so full of hles and lies, incompetence and presumption, but all she needs to do is to claim she is a believer. All for political expediency. If her opponents had such a checkered personal and professional life, they'd destroy his character in a second. I don't trust them, and I think they should be paying taxes, since they're so much more political than religious or principled.
