Here's someone telling you stuff you don't want to read:
The whole point of school (besides the official documentation of some things you've learned--the other whole point:) is to have someone make you do things you didn't do before you were paying tuition. The law was a tutor to lead us the Christ and the school wants to lead you to poetry and nineteenth-century American Lit.....
On the bright side, I'm sure there are connections to much of the stuff you are more interested in. You will probably be broadened in those things. And, you will keep teaching yourself about that stuff after you graduate.
Thus endeth the pep talk.
Now that you've flamed Milton, why not move on to John Bunyan? People just love flaming Bunyan.

I think V for Vendetta reflect on the fact that my generation is all nostalgic for stuff they did in the eighties (like read comic books).
V was even more radical and insane in the comic book, quoting freel from Aliester Crowley that the only law will be do what thou wilt.
At the same time, since he was insane, you weren't sure he was a "good guy" even when he won.
One could argue that V is deeply dangerous because it made the revolutionary anarchic urge look like it could produce something good. That would be a delusion that could produce a lot of damage.
Sorry to overburden you with comments but Alan Moore was a real favorite of mine.

Did you see Ladd and Lake in the adaptation of the Glass Key?

Hmm... I was dating Herbert later so I'm probably making some anachronistic associations... But there still may be something to it. The Wallace recommendation for Genevan history remains a good one for a beginning book.

Sounds to me like you need to stick it out but start a book club among your peers... Oh, and figure out what your extra job will be and make plans for that...
Well, I began this as an encouraging post. Really!
OK, whatever else, I think you need to get the best you can from the school while also developing with some like-minded students in adding your own content.
That is my totally ignorant opinion.
And, for what it is worth, I think a version of your disillusionment occurs in other school settings...

There is something about this post that makes me want to laugh. Nothing in itself. Just that, when you wrote it and still now, "Bride and Prejudice" is being promoted on the side column.

But you haven't read A. S Byatt's Possession: A Romance yet? Too bad.

Very impressive, Jandy! I wish I had learned how to use that stuff earlier (I still haven't!).
