in CITY OFFICIALS LOSING THE PUBLIC TRUST? UHH, YOU CAN’T LOSE WHAT YOU DON’T HAVE on The District Weekly
Hey, District Weekly,

What's your problem? Maybe you haven't gotten the memo, but there is a Long Beach east of Redondo. Your distribution map shows paper pick up points at Baker's Square on South St. - out of business for months - so I drive over to the alternative location: Static Salon on Spring St., which is still in business. I go in there and the girl after almost calling the cops about an unshaven man in a tee shirt at our door, said brusquely - "we don't carry that" with an emphasis on the that - your paper.

Times past I could pick it up at Cirivellos, but to be frank, your E.L.B. circulation sucks. I know, we're not the arts district or a trendy bar on Anaheim, but because of your newness to town, you might be surprised, we live here too and some of us can read.

Fire the distribution map maker and reimburse me for my gas expense on my wild goose chase. Otherwise, who gives a rip.

in WAR ON BOOKS on The District Weekly
you don't need a big bldg for LB Reads One Book - after all, one book takes very little space on a shelf or in your brain. I've never understood why the herd mentality is so accepted and even promoted in this town.

Hey,

Once upon an early 2008, I could pick up the DW and all its ad copy at Cirivellos or the Blue Dog - tho mysteriously not the Bach library. Now, as that DW location on South St. near Bellflower - did they sell pies or something akin to them? - seems to be shuttered, the DW doesn't get north of Signal Hill - at least not in a place where I can find it. What you got against Fifth District - north - residents?

Now I just peruse it online, skipping the ads John Morris and others pay so much for.

Bring back Cirivellos as a stop, better yet, Bach branch. Got it?

Hey, give the congresswoman a break. Just as she failed to pay her mortgage to research issues relating to the epidenmic of foreclosure, surely she's simply doing more research as to how much in unpaid receivables it takes before a small business goes belly up.

Isn't that the way Schipske was elected to the council's 5th district seat - by packing the Democratic party endorsement meeting with teacher union members?

in LOWENTHAL’S ASSEMBLY BID ENDORSED BY O’DONNELL AND LERCH | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
New name for PT: Torrance Daily Breeze at Long Beach (inspiration courtesy, Artie Moreno).

Got a call from a pollster last night: on a scale of one to three (one being never vote; two: maybe vote; three, leaning to vote), how did I plan to vote for Lowenthal & Uranga. I responded. Then I was faced with descriptions of both candidates' so-called accomplishments and was asked would this make me more likely to vote for...less likely or no difference.

I answered. Couldn't tell which side commissioned this thing.

Second headline mentions colleague, but the critical first headline doesn't make his presence at CSULB clear at all. Nada.

Theo,

Call the PD again, ask to speak to a male PIO, a dude, a guy - you get the idea - who might not be so reluctant to give you the scratch and sniff version, in other words, the whole nine inches...I mean the whole nine yards of what (and who) went down. I think they've still got male PIOs, but cha never know for sure, they rotate in and out so fast, just like they do in the Basement. Somebody stop this comment ...there, I just shot my wad.

Hey, forgive me if this issue got past me. The article's writer doesn't make one important thing clear: is this McDonald guy a CSULB prof? Maybe we're all supposed to be in the know - I guess I'm the only one not - but please, Mr. Writer Man, could you please refer me to where his being on campus is noted?

in HOW THE HOUSING, LENDING, STOCK, BOND & CURRENCY MARKETS GOT SCREWED, AND US ALONG WITH THEM | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
Not really. Who started the whole subprime fiasco? There has to be a ground zero, but no one has asked who.what.where.when - though the why is fairly evident: to make a killing. And if we had real govt. in DC, there should have been a big time inquiry to get to the bottom of this. Someone should go to jail, but I doubt it'll happen - ala Enron.

in PORT TRUCK DRIVERS TO MAYOR FOSTER AND COUNCIL: DRIVE A MILE IN MY RIG on The District Weekly
So when Is life supposed to be easy? Or pretty?

My point is, these guys drive trucks after coming here in creative border-crashing ways, other people work in coal mines and sometimes never come out, man off shore oil rigs, build cars like robots or operate dangerous saws on huge logs in mills.

There are tons of not so pretty jobs, not everybody can beat a keyboard and earn a buck or ride high on the political gravy train and pretend to worry about the more unfortuate and get free tickets or have galas like the doo wop glide and not worry about traffic tickets like ex-councilman Webb.

It's the system, baby.

BTW, listening to MSNBC at 10:55 a.m. about Geraldine Ferraro, speaker (Jonathan ???) IDed the paper as the "Torrance Daily Breeze" ... well close.

in CITY COUNCIL HOPES ITS VOTE WILL STOP PRESS-TELEGRAM’S CORPORATE “DEATH SPIRAL” | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
I don't get it. For years, the PT has covered stories originating with the Valley-based Daily News, and of interest to Valleyites only, but no one made a peep about it. Now it's become a political hot potato. But does a political body have the right to try to influence how journalists report the news by denying dollars.

It seemed to be a gang-bang on a well-known crappy paper (generally it takes me about 3-5 minutes to reat it at the library), but that's not the point.

Long Beach gets what it blindly allows to happen. We now have a congresswoman who represents Watts representing the bulk of the city in congress and a paper that reports on Torrance and the Valley that pretends to be Long Beach based, but is in reality to $$$ pipeline to Denver.

BTW, Bonnie Lowenthal, she of the divorced branch of the Lowenthal juggernaut, asked what happened to the archives. How come Archbold was not summoned up to answer those queries? I went by the building on the last few days, and the stuff being left behind was stunning.

in AN ELOQUENT PLEA FOR GOOD GOVERNMENT VS. THE MEN IN VERY FINE SUITS | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
I've no problem with the above, but it doesn't matter how many great ideas she has, if her personality limitation/deficit blocks implementation. You've got to combine the two: style it might be, but getting some doesn't mean you sacrifice substance in the process.

So let's buy Schipske some style, then she'll her substance will get closer to reality...who wants to chip in?

in AN ELOQUENT PLEA FOR GOOD GOVERNMENT VS. THE MEN IN VERY FINE SUITS | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
see comments two articles ago. If Schipske could grow a personality, she might get further. It's as simple as that. She's the wrong person to hook your cause to, no matter how worthy the issue. A Schipske-led charge will end up where they take the drek the clean off the beaches. She ain't got no political capital.

in SCHIPSKE’S COURAGEOUS PROPOSALS TAKE ON THE PORT’S POWERFUL STATUS QUO | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
Schipske's on-her-own and disdainful attitude and high handed method of serving results in her being marginalized by other members of the council. Several reps speak of problems in dealing with her. So, even if she came up with the second coming of Jesus as a sure-fire fundraising event for the city, only Gabelich and Uranga would support her. Gabelich is by far the most selfless, tolerant and long-suffering of the bunch. Uranga, I don't know.

Whether or not you have the next great idea, don't present it with a cute pink and fuzzy cartoon character holding a sign. Makes her look like a moron, which she ain't.

Give it ten years for early Social Security, if there's still $$$ in the system. Then we can talk about Medicare.

My gift to you is my years of experience I'll be happy to share with you and all the readers. As an extra attraction, I can do some focus groups that'll skew your demographic well past the X generation target.

Hey Dave. Guys like me (65) love it when you label DK as old, like that's a bad thing. (When I say Doug is getting old, I mean: Doug is getting old. Like, he’s had lots of birthdays.).

How old is Dave? Will age make him a bigger idiot, or is he doing just fine with it at his current age? Give it up, Dave. I've met you. How many birthdays have you had?

in PRESS-TELEGRAM IS LATE AGAIN TO THE STORY | The District Weekly on The District Weekly
Maybe we'd be better off if you didn't use the deaths of these children as a convenient way of attacking the PT (which of course needs to be attacked) and giving kudos to your buds. It's sad enough the way it is.
