Many are not using social networks, but some are beginning to adopt them. The big question is which ones, how many, and how to make the work efficient. What advice would you offer to an organization just starting to use social networking sites as part of their marketing strategy and had limited resources? How to make the decision to jump in strategically and smartly?

Re: Google, OpenSocial, and Marketing

Have you looked at Causes?

Re: Happy Valentine’s Day!

Here's mine: http://www.sharingfoundation.org

But I did a round up of charities doing special V-Day's campaigns - there's many ways to say I Love You with a gift to charity
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/02/the-...

You've got to love the mating ring tones that support environmental groups.

Re: Social Media Dashboard - Bloomberg for Social Media

awesome chris - I just wrote about this concept in a generic way - but thanks for a rich example
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/09/usin...

Re: Office 2.0 Podcast Jam | A View from Judi Sohn

Anna rocks! It reminds me of doing "shoulder to shoulder" training at community technology centers - with those on the other side of digital divide or when the Web first started. People got overwhelmed with the software and the site design -- so you'd guide them to that one thing, help them establish a habit (holding their hand, rewarding, whatever), and then got them interested in more.

I used to teach powerpoint this way too - in the late 1990s - to art teachers and artists - who would flip out because there were so many options. So, when I taught the application would give them the bare steps of building the preso - zen like. Then, once they got comfortable with bare minimum, I'd show them or guide to other features they asked for -- like, "I'd like to my titles bigger or different font or insert a picture."

In contract, my son who is 8 - and computer geek - asked me to show him ppt. I used my typical adult method - show the barebones. I walked away - when i came back he discovered by himself many advanced techniques - and pumped with questions on how to do things that I haven't even figured out!

so, guess my question is what, if anything, are the generational or technographics that you have to consider in this strategy? Or is it global?

Re: Tagging Strategies For Successful Social Bookmarking | Social Media Explorer

Excellent post on bookmarking. I didn't use your online survey .. that's from getting the test directly from MB - from a nonprofit management online leadership institute that I was the facilitator for about 15 years ago. I should test myself again because your type can change as you go through different life changes.

I have 6300 followers @kanter

I wrote a paper about 15 years ago using the Myers Briggs and Gardner's Intelligence theory as the basis for online community participation and designing online technical support programs. I can't find it -- I didn't have a large sample, I administered tests to sample of 100 online participants and conducted depth interviews. There were definitely some patterns as to who lurks who doesn't, who asks for help, how the help needs to strutured, and implications for online moderators. I'll be curious to see what you come up with.

<abbr>Beth Kanters last blog post..A Bold Experiment in Micro Donations: $2 from 12, 500 Twitter Users To Fund Clean Water</abbr>

Re: Does Social Media Transcend Personality?

This is great stuff Leslie. Great work.

I love MTBI stuff, have taught a number of classes in managerial communications using it.

I used it once to analyze different profiles of users requesting technical support so I could better assist them - this was 15 years ago!

What I love about MTBI is the dialogue you can have with other people once you are introduced to the framework and know your type. It can really shed some light if you're managing people or if your boss annoys you.

I wonder though -- MTBI was meant to evaluate face-to-face real time live interaction .. not virtual interaction. I don't think it was originally intended to evaluate online behavior.

I am wondering if some of the e-learning styles/profiles are better suited?

Also remember that the definition of introvert versus extravert is solely a "social" measure. It also has to do with how people process information. Introverts process by thinking it through internally - and extraverts process by externalizing their thoughts and ideas with other people.

Also, I think you have to look at degree of Introvert versus Extravert. My "Introvert" score was exactly in the middle. I wonder if you would see more definable patterns between strongly introverted and strongly extraverted

For me, I can take a lot more "people" or interactions with computer mediated communications e.g. online than I can do in a real-life situation because being at the computer - even if you are "socializing" is still a soliditary face-to-face activity....

Leslie, you say that you follow anyone who follows you - but are you using a tool like Tweetdeck to follow a smaller subset of people more closely?

I stopped automatically following everyone who follows me because I found that I couldn't get to know people and keep track in memory who they were. I started using Twitter back in October 2006 when there were not tools like Tweetdeck .. so my following patterns -- were at first - do I know them?

Then as I started to follow over 3,000 people, I found that I wasn't getting to know them very well. So, I started rotating following people - and try to keep around the 3K.

This has more to do with the way my brain works - or the way it was hard wired. As a boomer in her 50's, I grew up as a linear learner - but my exposure to online/internet as transformed me into more of a global learning style.

But every now and then, my cranial capacity fails me. Which also makes me wonder if there is a pattern between age and twitter following habits.

<abbr>Beth Kanters last blog post..Power Law of Participation: How does it differ for collective charitable giving?</abbr>

Re: Boston Social Media Breakfast 11: Social Media for Social Change

Yes, Mary Joyce and Digiactive rock! I didn't see that video - I pointed to another. But having attended a music school as a classical flute major, you can't escape that Carnegie Hall joke - I wrote about it in my post. So, of course, I thought of that joke and the line, but didn't realize that they used in the promotional materials. The joke is very very very familiar to anyone who aspired to be a professional classical music or attended a music school or conservatory. And the qualitative data - is also important because that's where the stories are - and that is what sells an ROI report.
http://legalservices.wikispaces.com/

Re: Don’t Fall Behind, Fundraising is Moving On!

Great post summarizing the fundraising efforts that use social media during the last few months - it's been going on for the last few years, although we're just reaching critical mass.

For some context:
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/11/twit...
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/fundraising20/
http://personalfundraising.wikispaces.com
http://widgetfundraising.org
http://gsp4good.wikispaces.com

Re: x

Chad, you did an awesome job of taking notes of the sessions! I agree that you need both qualitative and quantitative information - the qualitative is really important for learning and improvement of social media strategy.

I organized a panel for nonprofits called "Social Media ROI Case Study Slam" four nonprofits presented their approaches to considering ROI. Great idea for a series. This is topic near and dear to my heart and that I have been blogging about almost everyday since 2003.

I recently presented on this topic at Gnomedex about the various social networked fundraising campaigns I've run to raise over $200,0000 for Cambodian orphans. At Gnomedex, we did an experiment and raised $2,500 in 90 minutes.

More here:
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/08/how-...
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/08/trac...

Let me know if I can be a resource to you.

Re: 2008/09/19/the-well-that-twitter-built/

Nice to see folks discovering the power of Twitter and Social Media for good causes ..

Re: 2008/09/19/the-well-that-twitter-built/

In August, I raised $4,000 - $2,500 0f that in 90 minutes for Cambodia orphans. I've been using Twitter for fundraising now for a year - but the August campaign was the most dramatic success
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/08/how-...
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/08/trac...

-It takes passion
-A good cause
-Storytelling or showing the impact of the gifts ..

Tools like twitter help accelerate the giving.

Re: 2008/09/25/social-actions-twitterfeed/

I love social actions and Joe Solomon who is awesome.. but I'm having a problem with this approach. Anything that I ask my friends or followers to support, I personally vet - I know the organization has the capacity to do what it says its going to do or know the individual - personally or by reputation. Something that is automatic and based on a keyword search takes a great leap of faith ..... I guess my personal philanthropy is just old fashioned .. and while I may be passionate about a particular issue, I really give based on knowing the person behind the cause or organization and have confidence that will do a good job with investment.

Re: 2008/09/24/drive-money-to-your-cause/

Hi Leslie,

Thanks for the ping!

Online fundraising is still a relatively young field - having really got started in the mid-1990s when credit card transactions became available. (Here's a blast from the pass - an article I wrote about the early experiments of online giving - http://www.bethkanter.org/artswire/cyberfundrai...)

Anyway, integrated offline/online strategies have been part of the nonprofit/activist's tool kits almost since the beginning - so it makes a lot of sense to combine offline/online with social media. The holy grail would be some sort of rating or crowd sourcing layer - so the organizations or individuals behind those actions who have the passion, capacity, and determination to make sure their efforts have a true impact would rock.

Also, the rating system or crowd sourcing or some sort of filtering would also help when there are so many, many, many actions out there that it turns into drinking from Fire hose ...

Re: 2008/09/29/social-media-consultant/

Here's something to consider for a follow up
http://www.successful-blog.com/1/a-rubric-for-s...

Re: 2008/09/29/social-media-consultant/

Alex,

There are two possible solutions.

a.) Some professional certification or standards. Ha, can you imagine a field wide discussion on the core skills, competencies, and knowledge - and then having people take some sort of test for certification? You know, like windows server certification, etc.

b.) Clients need to know how to do due diligence. That they would do this for any consultant - check references, look at experience, get at least two quotes, etc.

As a consultant - I vet any inquiry - to make sure that it isn't just tool driven and that shoe fits - the social media shoe. I've even told some potential clients - no you don't need a social media strategy - you need x first.

Re: 2008/09/29/social-media-consultant/

Alex:

That's my measure of success as a consultant - does the client have the skills and knowledge to implement the project without me? Was I able to deliver training, coaching, support and strategy guidance so that I am no longer under contract with them. My goal is to build the organization's capacity to do the work.

It takes a constructivist approach - to be the guide on the side and the sage on the stage - so totally agree with Leslie about being guide, not an expert.

Re: Slow Feed Movement: 7 Tools to Filter the RSS Flood

Wow, this just reduced my information overload score
http://informationcoping.wikispaces.com/Assessm...

Seriously great post - I just discovered Tweet Deck - an aside from filtering - it makes some twitter work flow very efficient
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/10/4393...

Re: 2008/11/28/feedburner-stats-down/

I'm pretty annoyed - they always seem drop a couple of hundred subscribers. But, let's look at the definition of Altruism. It means loving others as oneself or behavior that promotes the survival chances of others at a cost to ones own. In other words, self-sacrifice for the benefit of others.

So do you really think that social network sites can be altruistic (http://www.atruists.org)-- it's the people on those sites. And, is donations the right metric?

And, I suspect the amount of money raised on each site has to do more with how much they have built a following and relationships on those different sites.

Re: Which Social Network is the Most Generous?

There's a recent survey from NTEN that looked at the baseline for social networking use by nonprofits - includes all sizes
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2009/05/port...

All of my fundraising has been for a small organization as a board member - documented here
http://gsp4good.wikispaces.com.

There is a soon to be published study based on the results of the America's GIving Challenge -- most of the participants were small organizations. Well, it gave me the inspiration and nerve to get out of the closet with videocasting and podcasting.

What will I do next? Hmm .. for now I want to perfect the art of moment sharing and quick, on the fly podcast interviews. I want to be able to create some how-tos -- not only what buttons to push on the software, but think about the genre. Then, I want to be able to share that with folks, mostly nonprofits, and have them use to capture and share knowledge from conference gatherings, meetings, etc.

Then, I will work my way up the food chain -- probably not for another six months but I want to take the points that I learned about planning from Leesa and figure out what podcasting 101 (John Walker) would look like as an extension to my blog.

I'm also going to continue with the screencasting - but the work you pointed me too during our conversation in the hall has given me lots to think about in terms of perfecting my own screencasts.

Re: Gramps Passed

My condolences.

Re: Man in a Suit

Ready for GQ.

Re: New Media Responsibility

Great question! In the nonprofit space, we've been having this debate as a result of one blogger challenging key nonprofit tech organizations and bloggers to do a side-by-side comparison in quanticast in the interest of transparency. The conclusion - numbers like this without context do not mean anything. Our nonprofit association did a terrific post sharing their metrics
http://www.nten.org/blog/2007/09/20/measuring-s...

What you are describing as a map probably goes one step further -- keying the metrics to strategy points. What I would love to see is a real life example of a map and with a key metric. Or maybe just a template. Then, in true social media style, perhaps a blog meme that challenges us to share our maps.

I've found it very difficult to wrap my brain around all this , with so many different metrics to choose from - you can get easily distracted and there's complexity.

I'm also look at the sublte differences between "measures of success" and "ROI" and exactly how you consider the metrics in either case. Measures of success - are your goals, plus the "evidence" you gather to determine if you've been successful. Those numbers do not exist alone, but paint a broader context for improving what you're doing while it is underway. Some people call this continuous improvement.

The ROI is more about asking questions - did we get our money's worth? What did it cost us? What did it yield? Of course, as Chris Penn notes there are also the intangibles that lie beneath and are really hard to trace and measure.

Both are valuable to do.

I did a post awhile back riffing on Kaushik's blog metrics post
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2007/05/meas... -- as part of exploring this topic
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/google/index...
for a screencast on google analytics and some workshops
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2007/06/new-...

All leading me back to your point .. that KEY metrics in the context of social media goals and strategy are valuable to determine the ROI and continuous improvement.

Thanks for thought provoking article ...

Re: Help Send a Woman to College

Thank you so much Chris! I just found out that the computer is taken care of through other channels -- that's great. But I also found out that there is another college kid in the program who needs a sponsor. So, the if the campaign total goes to $2,000 - we can all sponsor another college student. If not, the excess will go into the Sharing Foundation's general education fund that covers kids who are not sponsored in both college and high school program.

Re: New Media- STAND UP

I had wanted to go to Vegas, but family commitments and a speaking engagement for the Museum Conference conflicted. I spend more time in my "industry" - nonprofit land, talking about social media, etc. I'm always on the panel on the new media - and I'm still getting "what's a blog." Many of the things I try or read about, are so far from the reach of the average nonprofit. There is a great deal of skepticism. Yet, there is a demand to know more about it - not necessarily from the "let's implement this right now." but to decide whether to pay attention or not.

We need to be out there integrating into other sectors ....

Re: The New Gig

Congratulations!!!

Re: 400 Bucks Can Change The World

I order one too .. it's destined for Cambodia.

Re: Consider Impact and Make Meaningful Projects

Great goals!

I've been doing a series of Webinars for the Case Foundation recently - on personal fundraising - trying to inspire and encourage individuals to raise money for a cause they care about in their communities.

Some resources here:
http://personalfundraising.wikispaces.com

Look forward to read more about of your thoughts on all this .... and seeing where it goes.

Re: One Laptop Program Extended Until Dec 31st

I got one and gave one too .. great idea.

This could also be a teachable moment for your kids - if you plan to get one for your child -- about giving to others.

Here's some other ideas
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2007/11/enco...

The second laptop -- after it comes here for a while, will be taken over to Cambodia for the Sharing Foundation's computer school.

Re: Consider Your Media-as-Business Strategy

I really appreciate your mindmap ... and this post. I'm a visual person - so what I've done is to put a "pause button" photo on my monitor and when I get requests coming - I "hit the pause" button and ask myself if it relates to my long term goals.

I also try to visualize a weekly capacity calculator in my calendar:

Capacity Calculator:

168 hours in a week
56 for sleep
28 hours dedicated to home/kids/family
14 for meals
7 for showering/dressing
7 for spouse
7 for business development/administration

49 remain for work.

When I don't pay attention to this framework or limits, I end up short cutting sleep or family or showering .. and that's not good.

As someone who has worked freelance for past 27 years, I've found that it is essential to manage time - your most valuable resource. I struggle with that daily - and often efficiency gets slaughtered on the alter of inspiration. Or, perhaps I lack discipline sometimes.

I've also found that some clients can take up more of my time than others - and it isn't alway billable. And, then sometimes the quality of the time used - is not great -- that is a particular job or client is not fun to work with and that has a stress impact that can be a time suck and prevent from scaling.

So, I have a happiness is a warm puppy clause in my contracts - not necessarily stated in those terms. But gives me an opportunity to formally evaluate the relationship in short increments.

Thanks again for the great post.

Re: Scaling Yourself

Jason, I'm so glad you commented here because I noticed your twitter reference to your post but didn't favorite it .. going off to read it - while testing a comment tracking software. It reminds of Twitter - you could love on - and get "just in time" answers. Well, in those days, "just in time" was 1 day - because the packets would be distributed to other bbs. I was using the BBS to post questions or share resources to help with a local support group.

Then I discovered the Internet a couple years later - and was the community builder for Arts Wire - an online network for artists with unix-based text system called Caucus.
here's a description from an archived web page http://tinyurl.com/5f225j

At the same time I discovered places like the Well, ECHO (east coast hangout) and Meta Network (where arts wire has hosted). Those places were all about conversations - like what we're doing here in the comments.

Also at this time I discovered the gopher - remember the gopher? You could sit down with a beer in hand and literally visit every server on the web via Cern. I was self-described gopher mistress .. I organized the Arts Wire gopher - this is was about early aggregation!

My career as a gopher mistress was very short-lived because a guy in Switzerland and something called mosaic .. the question "world wide what?" was asked by many. Remember the blink tag?

I volunteered to be the Dance Cybrian -- sort of like a wiki on the cern server where anyone could volunteer to aggregate links in their field. I aggregated web sites for dance groups, dance companies, etc. In the beginning, mostly unix programmers who liked to clog dance - and come by and criticize my code.

I started Spiderschool - which was a link list I created on how to create web pages. Later, I used to summarize the wisdom that came out of the community discussion related to how artists and arts organizations can use the web ...
Later, as more and more people created web pages - I hand facilitated comments - my first crowd sourced piece was getting people to help me proof read my pages -
The Typo Police Page
http://www.bethkanter.org/spiderpolice/police.html
Note the blink tag!

In 1996, when the first digital cameras and web cams out - I got one. I used my webcam attached my laptop as my first digital camera to record photos from a conference that I was taking notes for - and then publishing as web pages .. ha live blogging and video blogging.

Also around that time, I discovered what would now be called sessmic or perhaps qik -- you could use your webcam and go "reflector surfing" - it was chat room with video. Here's a story from that era
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2006/10/a_co...

So, when blogging software came out - I was so excited because a) I didn't have hand code 2.) the conversations could happen right there on the post.

I blathered on too long - thanks for the trip down memory lane

Re: NTEN Rocks

Chris:

Great session! It's about having a global learning style - the ability to scan and patterns. It is about having really good pattern analysis skills. There are generational issues too - as the brain ages it becomes harder to take in as much.

There's some interesting brain research on the impacts of information on us - and also some interesting research on how younger people are consuming information versus older people.

Have you read David Shenk?

Re: Five Tools I Use for Listening

Chris:

Happy Father's Day!

Anything with a dog picture catches my attention! IN the nonprofit sector, many nonprofits have "strategic technology plans" http://tinyurl.com/3k9coo - and there was a rule called the 70/20/10 rule -- it went something like this spend your time and resources in this precentage..

10% hardware
20% software
70% wetware

Wetware? Yes, your brain - that includes training, support, planning, and evaluation.

Even though there are many free social media tools, I think you can still apply this to social media strategy.

Re: FriendFeed- The Hidden Conversation

I went in a for a few deep dives and a community experiment or two
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/friendfeed/

The initial reaction from many people is that of redundancy -because they see some content twice. There are ways to tweak and filter, but that comes with immersing.

The best value of FriendFeed for me so far is the rooms feature. We have an NPTECH room - they are like online forums from mid-1990s - but what is nice - is that you have to intentionally share something. So, a nice way to sip some tea.

Like everything else -you can't set up a profile and it let stream - if your goal is conversation. You have to comment on other people's streams, etc.

Re: 50 Steps to Establishing a Consistent Social Media Practice

Let's see if nonprofit folks can add to your list
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/07/50-f...

Re: 50 Steps to Establishing a Consistent Social Media Practice

PS here's ten more not sure if they are on the list - but ten things in ten minutes
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2008/04/npte...

Re: Announcing Project Dogfood

Ah, dogs and social media - my total weakness
http://cutedogtheory.wikispaces.com

Re: Expand Your Blog Reading

Exactly how do you find blogs on summize? are you searching by a particular keyword?

I'm beginning to find that Zemanta is helpful too.

Re: Solve Some Real World Problems

I think if you understand the difference between transactional and relational - that it could be sustainable.

Re: Thinking About Trust Agents

I love the concept - it's what a good network weaver, online community manager, or in some cases a good sales person does - they build relationships so you trust them.

The term "trust agent" is sort of a turn off to me - it seems like a non-human robot to me - I envision Hal and hear his vote - trust me. Maybe that is just me. I like the term advisor better, but also steward (it's being used in another book though - by Nancy White, John Smith and Etienne Wenger) and used to described a community leader who helps "steward" or guide their community of practice to the right technology tools.

I also think of the word "trustee" - which in nonprofit land - are the people on a board of directors who are entrusted with guiding the organization and making sure it reaches its mission --

Re: Alltop Launches Version Two

I love version 2, but i hope they fix the bugs - I got dumped from the nonprofit and social media lists .. sniff sniff

Re: Alltop Launches Version Two

ah, they fixed the bug - sort of - I'm not back on the list - but of instead of being at the top of the alltop nonprofit, I'm last on the list! Once mature .. you may reach the point where you can look at a traditional ROI process -- e.g. benefits - tangible/intangible, translated into a value with metrics, and then a financial equation (e.g. net gain, opportunity cost, etc)

See:
http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2009/02/at-w...

http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/2009/02/riff...

Re: How The National Wildlife Federation Uses Social Media

Nice interview with Danielle. Responsibility is a two way street ... better practices from nonprofits and better designed contests might get at answer to your question: How can non-profits use “vote for me” opportunities to create awareness without cheapening the very issues they are working for?

Begging happens when the contests designed to benefit a small number of organizations that are competing for a large chunk of cash. That is if you go back look at the history of these efforts over the last three years, organizations will go all out, especially with a big cash incentive. Yes it does fly in the face of social media best practices, but I suspect with the economic pressures that many institutions are facing -- it isn't surprising.

And, the directives for strategy might be coming from the c-suite that is looking more at the dollar prize, not at social media best practices.

Contests could be designed to encourage best practices and the reward would not be for begging, but for using social media in a responsible way.
That's a win-win.

<abbr>Beth Kanter’s last blog post..So you want a Facebook Fan Page for Your Nonprofit? I thought your tweet was asking for suggestions or crowdsourcing advice - not promoting the post! Silly me!

I think that the first tip should be "Create a Fan Page first as your home base and main facebook presence" then add a Cause. Use groups for smaller, more intimate organizing. But only branch out to these other presences if you have the capacity and strategy to support them. That was the advice that Randy Zuckerman offered in the NTEN webinar. I agree with that.

Also, on your last tip - stats stats stats -- well stats alone are meaningless - unless you mapping against your strategy and reflecting on what works and what doesn't - you won't make much progress.

Re: TopRank Tips: Conference Live Blogging

Thanks for this great post!
