For a society to develop effectively, its citizens have to be capable of engaing in processess both positively and negatively as long they have a critical understanding of the wider society.

I know V is very interested in the link beteween volunteering and employability, so it might be useful to speak to them about this?

Re: Why Bother Using the Web in Youth Work

hey mas - this looks really interesting - sorry i couldn't make it on sat - was feeling awful! although i am really interested in the personal development stuff for young people, i was wondering whether there is an opportunity to develop a new way of working that doesn't end up as trying to use the web as tool but really looks at how the web can change the way we interact.

For example, many people are willing to interact in a different way with work colleagues and that has a huge impact on the way they work and engage at work and develop ideas etc - could that be applied to youth work?

Re: New YoMo Site

the site is looovely!!!

Re: YoMo Foundation Update

as one of the well meaning people that wasn't well organised, i would like to apologise for my inaction especially today as everyone blogs on world poverty!!!

Re: Digital Youth Work - Appreciating the Environment

hey mas - i was thinking of how to do something in the experiment side and this is not the best idea in the world but what about something that encourages the young people to come up with ideas for how the want to re-design, shape their local environment and link that to a FB page or local blog and encourage comments...

Re: If you’re young your views really don’t count!

For me the votes at 16 camapign isn't about viewing young people as potential adults rather it is about fairness - the law with regards to 16 year olds is messy - they can join the army but not vote? How does that make sense? Also I think young people have a right to have their vote counted along with adults - our voting should be open to larger numbers (and age ranges) because we should value their voice alongside adults' voices

Re: If you’re young your views really don’t count!

I wouldn't say that it is a ground up campaign (from young people) but I don't think that makes the case for it invalid. I also don't think voting reduces young people's childhood. Young people are asked to contribute to wide range of discussions and decisions about their life and the fact that voting is not on the table seems to be ridiculous. I don't see voting as something that only adults get - I think we should be creating a society that encourages all of us to participate - (I am equally passionate about votes for prisoners) for me it is a matter of justice not responsibility. I don't care whether young people use their vote but I think it is important that they have the ability to vote - does that make sense?

Re: If you’re young your views really don’t count!

Totally agree that the discussion about engagement should be about getting politicians to engage with the people they represent not the other way round - I think falling numbers of voters are going to push people locally and nationally to take that on more. There is also the possibility of getting some dynamic politician that believes that and then changes everything in politics like Obama's election did in the States.
