hey mas - i was thinking of how to do something in the experiment side and this is not the best idea in the world but what about something that encourages the young people to come up with ideas for how the want to re-design, shape their local environment and link that to a FB page or local blog and encourage comments...

hey mas - this looks really interesting - sorry i couldn't make it on sat - was feeling awful! although i am really interested in the personal development stuff for young people, i was wondering whether there is an opportunity to develop a new way of working that doesn't end up as trying to use the web as tool but really looks at how the web can change the way we interact.
For example, many people are willing to interact in a different way with work colleagues and that has a huge impact on the way they work and engage at work and develop ideas etc - could that be applied to youth work?

interesting idea but I am not sure I am entirely comfortable with the premise of using citizenship to create 'good citizens' - who are employable and will volunteer. For a society to develop effectively, its citizens have to be capable of engaing in processess both positively and negatively as long they have a critical understanding of the wider society.
I know V is very interested in the link beteween volunteering and employability, so it might be useful to speak to them about this?

in The bigger problem - knives or the media? on The (late) Breakfast Society
What I find interesting about the debate around the knife/ gang culture is how invested politicians and the media re in believing it's true - each new story of a 'stabbing' is lit up in headlights - even when its not a stabbing (the young boy in Eltham who died in a fight that wasn't gang related or as a result of a knife led to a newsnight piece on gang and knife culture in London.
The sad fact is that we are talking ourselves into a culture where knives and guns are glamourised not by rap music but by the press and adults in general - we are sublimely coaching young people into behaviour that they wouldn't ordinarily condone
