in #CollegeJourn wrap-up: Money and strikes on Innovation in College Media
Aw, I sound so sad in that quote about our printer. I should clarify: the financial situation has aggravated our attempt to get a new printer, but I'm sure it will still happen.

On a less depressing note, another successful Collegejourn night. The moderating was especially good--keeping everyone on topic when it threatened to veer off into non sequiturs.

How about a social network like Ning?

Smart stuff. If micropayments = piracy, then newspapers are losing the money they get from online ads and the business situation becomes even worse.

I think Twitter is less complicated than a lot of stuff above it, especially searchable database, panorama, game, and maybe map.

Interested in how a calculator would be implemented.

scmurley Yeah, Twitter kind of slipped in at the last minute. I also think there are ways to organize the list differently - thinking social vs. multimedia vs. engagement or something.

in Can't afford the Adobe creative suite? on Innovation in College Media
Great post, Lauren. The other problem with Jumpcut was that you couldn't export your movie once it was edited to a more popular site like Youtube. That feature broke my little heart after I spent 5 hours putting something together on it.

It's an obvious choice, but if you're looking to create a slideshow in Flash you can save money and a lot of coding time just using Soundslides.

I don't think I'll be entering (my paper's cheap!), but I'm looking forward to getting inspiration from the nominees.

scmurley $30 per organization for all entries is not a bad deal, Will. Hope they can swing it.

I voted for Jessica Estepa. I liked those who suggested more multimedia tutorials (a la Greg Linch's post about changing the Hurricane's website), but Estepa tracked me down on Twitter with practically no contact info to go on. That's doggedness!

in College news covers the inauguration on Innovation in College Media
The Georgetown Voice will definitely be covering it, starting with an inauguration issue running tomorrow. The blog has an inauguration guide, as well.

This sounds really appealing. Like you, I'm torn between a love for democracy and disappointment with what democracy sometimes produces.

in Blogging 101: A little help? on the exploding newsroom
Talk about blogrolls? I think it'd be worth sharing since you're talking so much about links. Make sure they know that blogrolls are useful ways to increase conversation, but putting on big links like CNN or Drudge is a waste of space.

"The link is the essence of the web". I love that. I'm going to use this post when I email my own paper's bloggers.

in Algerian single mothers jailed for adultery on Infidels Are Cool
I'd take this report with a grain of salt. Like the article says, the person saying this is actually sponsored by the Moroccan government--a group actively opposed to the Sahrawi liberation movement running this alleged camp. The Moroccan lobbying group running the trip has been caught in many lies before, so while no one in the US has verified the existence or lack thereof of this prison, it's not like the Moroccan lobby is disinterested.

If you're interested in womens' rights in the Maghreb, consider this: in Sahrawi culture, a woman can divorce her husband if he beats her (among other ways to divorce), and a party is thrown by the community to make sure she doesn't feel like a pariah. In Morocco, husbands could beat their wives without legal repercussion until only a few years ago.
