I am currently studying for BEC, why do people say Becker is not really good for passing BEC? I feel like I am understanding the content I am learning? Is it because there are not many homework questions?

in Jackman taking on samurai in 'Wolverine' sequel on Kung Fu Cinema
OMG!!!! I just want these movies to stop!!! This movie was so terrible. It was not a good movie on any aspect. I was cracking up when I saw an interview with Hugh Jackman yesterday. He was saying that he wanted viewers to feel uncomfortable watching him (Wolverine) feeling disturbed and a sense of creepiness; fearful of Wolverine. Lol basically the way Heath Ledger's Joker made viewers feel. Lol what a joke.

I was like yeah, the only thing Disturbing about Wolverine in this movie is him running around butt-naked into barns. WTF?! LOL Yeah and Wolverine was so dark and creepy the way he tells Sabertooth, "no no Victor don't hurt innocent people I love them!" through the whole freaking movie. And how every time Wolverine and Sabertooth hugged (yeah remember that in the comics?) and told each other how much they loved each other and how brothers look out for each other; I swear I heard, "Fa La La La". Yes Yes uncomfortable indeed Mr. Jackman.

Ok, so you hate Sabertooth because he killed your, oh wait a minute he didn't kill your chick in the film? So things are cool between you guys right? So effin stupid. Anyone who knows just a bit about Sabertooth was most likely disturbed seeing Sabertooth pouring fake blood on someone.

This movie should have been called, "X-Men Origins: Hugh Jackman".

Even my gf was confused during the whole movie and she was actually stoked to see it and knows nothing of comic books. She could even tell it was sloppy and poor writing and that so much was left out or just lazily skipped.

It was SOOOOOOO BAD. I guess it's no Spider-Man 3 though. What I heard is that they're making two more Spider-Man movies. Wtf? Please NO!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I liked the cheesy "love story" (wolverine; moon girl; and wachi-chu? WTF?!) in it and how the adamantium bonding process takes only 20 seconds and looks nothing not even remotely close to the actuall process, or the glimps of it from X2. Memory swiping adamantium bullets??? WTF???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in The Great Expat Dilemma on Kyle Hepp
Ooo, good post. Personally I prefer hanging out with foreigners because we have more in common and I don't have to explain my jokes/sarcasm/cultural norms as much...I also get bored of speaking Spanish all the time and want to speak English...half of my life is in Spanish, particularly work, so in my down time, I prefer speaking English. I have long conversations with Yasha (you know Yasha) with me speaking only English and him speaking only Spanish, even though we both speak pretty much fluently each other's languages. We're just more comfortable in our own...

Also, good point about what a 'real' Chilean experience is. I had a very broad Chilean upbringing with my ex-girlfriend with family members at both ends of the social scale. Now my experience is pretty much entirely with middle to upper class Chileans. The key word there is 'Chileans'...they're living 'real' Chilean lives because they're Chilean.. And I'm experiencing their Chilean lives. Just because they don't live in poverty doesn't mean their lives are any less 'real'.

A lot of people come to Chile (and other countries in South America) determined to have 'real' experiences. This often seems to mean living in conditions they wouldn't accept at home and being 'friends' with people they wouldn't be friends with at home. To me, a 'real' experience is having friends who share common values, experiences and usually education, not living a forced and false existence that you can get out of whenever you want. Not that friendship across social levels cannot happen, of course, because that's patently untrue, just that it's usual to fall in with a crowd of people who are similar to you.

And finally, apologies for making this an absurdly long comment but a song by Pulp comes to mind. Here are the lyrics :)

"She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge,

she studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College,

that's where I,

caught her eye.

She told me that her Dad was loaded,

I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola."

She said "Fine."

and in thirty seconds time she said,

"I want to live like common people,

I want to do whatever common people do,

I want to sleep with common people,

I want to sleep with common people,

like you."

Well what else could I do -

I said "I'll see what I can do."

I took her to a supermarket,

I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere,

so it started there.

I said pretend you've got no money,

she just laughed and said,

"Oh you're so funny."

I said "yeah?

Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here.

Are you sure you want to live like common people,

you want to see whatever common people see,

you want to sleep with common people,

you want to sleep with common people,

like me."

But she didn't understand,

she just smiled and held my hand.

Rent a flat above a shop,

cut your hair and get a job.

Smoke some fags and play some pool,

pretend you never went to school.

But still you'll never get it right,

cos when you're laid in bed at night,

watching roaches climb the wall,

if you call your Dad he could stop it all.

You'll never live like common people,

you'll never do what common people do,

you'll never fail like common people,

you'll never watch your life slide out of view,

and dance and drink and screw,

because there's nothing else to do.

Sing along with the common people,

sing along and it might just get you through,

laugh along with the common people,

laugh along even though they're laughing at you,

and the stupid things that you do.

Because you think that poor is cool.

I want to live with common people"

in Chileans On an Individual Level Vs. Chilean Society on Kyle Hepp
Amanda...international food store! That would be nice...

There are one or two small places in Vina and in Patronato the Asian food stores stock the essentials (at ridiculous prices though). We made a thai yellow curry with reineta last night (you can get real thai curry paste in Lider), so ethnic food is available...just about...after more than 5 years in south america, I've learnt to take what i can get :)

in Chileans On an Individual Level Vs. Chilean Society on Kyle Hepp
I'd completely agree. On an individual, private level, I find most Chileans to be incredibly nice, polite, friendly and amorosos. Let those same Chileans out in public and they turn into rude, obnoxious monsters.

I don't let it bother me anymore...but it used to drive me crazy, especially when I was visiting regularly from Buenos Aires where, for all their faults, there's a layer of civility similar to what we expect in the UK or US (although don't get me started on why Chilean society is infinitely more appealing than Argentine once that layer is stripped off...)

It's also much worse in Santiago and even in Vina/Valpo. Head south, even just a couple of hours to Santa Cruz and the attitude changes completely. The people in the Lake District are an entirely different Chilean as well. I want to live in the country ...

I miss Chile when I'm away. Despite its faults, it's home :)

in Beale Street Music Festival on Consequence of Sound
One of the great things to me about this festival is that it is a relaxing weekend with great music. People complain because there aren't HUGE, HUGE names there. I'm a huge music fan, but I'm not quite sure I would want that to happen. Let's say that they book someone like Eric Clapton...Do you know how many people in that small area would show up to see him? It would almost be unbearable. Also, think about the ticket prices. This festival has one of the lowest ticket prices imaginable. The three day pass is sometimes less that just ONE of the performances would be in concert.

There is one thing that I hope Memphis in May does this year. Keep the larger acts off the middle stage and keep them at two end stages. There is a whole lot more room at the end stages and when there is a huge group in the middle, people walking from one end of the park to the other can't make it through.

But to me personally, The Beale Street Music Festival organizers have done a tremendous job. You look at festivals around the globe and the complaints they receive and Beale Street Music Festival seems very nicely designed.

in Interesting Developments in Friday Trend Day Down on Afraid to Trade Blog
Hi Corey, the heaviest volume came in the last 5 minutes and it was positive. Do you see anything technically that is indicating we will bounce once again off the Dow 8k mark or head down to test the November lows? Wondering also what you see technically with FSLR. That is a high flying mover with lots of price action which makes for nice moves with the options. The daily chart shows a channel uptrend which narrowed on the way which up(bearish) and broke down, but has now been channel trading widely last few weeks. Thanks!

in Chile Blogger Meet Up on Kyle Hepp
Well it took me quite a long time to get over how much I disliked certain aspects of Chile. Close to 3 years actually...it was on my first trip down to the Lake District after almost 3 years living in Argentina (and coming to Chile once or twice a month) that made me appreciate what this country has to offer. Despite Chile's faults, I find life here to be easier, more interesting and generally more pleasant than Argentina. And I love Argentina, although only now for holidays.

For me to really enjoy this country, I had to call a truce with the aspects that pissed me off. Once I did that, I came to really enjoy living here. I still enjoy living here, probably more now than ever. Even if I were to receive a better offer and leave Chile, I'd still maintain a base here. It's a beautiful country with a lot to offer. Unfortunately, its capital city is a soul sucking, crushing weight of a hell hole which turns people off the country as a whole...and understandably so. But if you do manage to deal with the crap here and learn to ignore it and escape Santiarsehole as often as possible then Chile's a great place to live.

in The Least Indie Thing I’ve Seen All Week on Baby, You Got a Stew Goin'!
Totally with you, and what's dangerous about it is when someone seems this focused on licensing their songs, it's easy enough to imagine that they write their songs with licensing in mind. Saw a good article somewhere (can't remember where) that talked about how we can now assume bands aren't just writing songs so that they can get licensed, they are writing 15-second sections of songs designed to be licensed.

The end result is that something that is supposed to be about communication between an artist and a listener instead becomes refracted to be about communicating to a listener through a brand, which by definition means the song is little more than a tool to make you have positive associations with a brand.

I have (grudgingly) accepted that bands need to be more aggressive about licensing to make a living, but it's hard not to wonder if for some the focus has become more on selling their songs than on creating great art.

As an aside, maybe the best model is Yo la Tengo's, who writes quite a bit of commercial and soundtrack music, but do it completely separately from their actual releases. From what I understand, they'll happily write music for a candy commercial, but they'd never license, say, Sugarcube to Starburst.

Sadly, it's only OK, but nice to see it getting a US release. More important, think they could bother to play the US again sometime this decade? Last time was, I think, 2005, not counting a couple of acoustic gigs in Seattle, and last year alone the Posies played something like 30 shows in Europe.
