Does it matter? What about wannabes? Ton of those. The question is not who are the early adopters, but who are the best adopters.

The folks that just start making it part of their lives and quit talking about it. Those folks are the tipping point type folks, the ones that carry these bright shiny tools into the mainstream.

In the US we are still talking about the oohs and ahhs of cell phones and digital cameras. Many many folks still can't just get past that and ignore their existence. Likewise, even the most geeky among us can't get past it. Honestly, it's the less techy folks that bring about main stream adoption. Those that can just adopt a new technology and move on, they have the real talent. Most folks just can't stop ignoring the bright and shiny things.

So yeah, maybe a lot of us have problems and that's why we early adopt, but we're not special. Interesting topic for sure. And fun.

Re: Two years and counting: RickMahn.com

Congratulations! But truth be told I want it to mean someone that I can trust and be comfortable with. Someone for which I don't have to put a face on all the time. Someone that ignores the warts or even relishes their uniqueness.

True friends of that level are hard to find.

I work the next level down though and find much satisfaction. Friend include there folks I can chat with, share a drink with or break bread with. That's the group I'm working on growing. From those will come the life long friends in the top list.

To each of those I show the love I can when I can. I listen, I laugh, and I cry with them. I offer to share a meal, a drink, a card. Cultivate and enjoy I say.

Re: Luca’s Baptism

Baptisms are so special, both to you and the one being baptized. The truth is man was meant to have some solitude. That's why there's a word for it. :)

Being off from work for an extended period right now, I've had a chance to experience real solitude. Not that cheap 5 minutes away or evening off, but actual whole days with just myself. Man, very refreshing.

Not something I'd want forever, but to have time to really just absorb and be one between you and the universe is a wonderful opportunity. Men used to do that before we became so 'civilized'.

Enjoy your family, but make time for yourself. Take a day away. Get up early. Leave and don't come back till the kids are in bed.

Re: Grilled to a Crisp

This is occurring more frequently for me as well. It still doesn't have the stream feeling that Twitter gives me. Like others, I'm not sure it's got a place at this point in time.

Rejaw might do better if they can hold onto whatever share they can grasp right now and hope Twitter and others go by the way side. It hasn't brought anything significant to the table to date that would make me drop any service in favor of Rejaw.

Now if this had a coo, and perhaps nonlinear interface, say with spokes, bubbles, and slides, that would be something. Hey wait...

At any rate, your review has got people talking. I'd have loved more information on a couple of these though as I'm shopping around for a BB system.

Most promising on my list are vB and phpBB so far. That's based on install base and support. vB is leading though based on reports that phpBB still has significant security holes. Your note about 'old style' also makes me take a step back.

I've not investigated Drupal, and I noticed you didn't mention it in the list. I believe though that Drupal != bulletin board system but is a more comprehensive tool, including blogging and other tools as well. Probably best to make another article just for that.

On a personal note, I do appreciate your reviews and look forward to more useful ones like this.

Re: 2008/08/15/ways-to-get-your-head-in-the-game/

Pai,

Another thorough article. The first example Google chose to show off Gears with is Google Reader (a really great example). Google Reader, up until a few days ago, was a way to read your favorite sites by subscribing to their feeds but its use was limited to when you were connected to the Internet. Google Gears allows you to use Google Reader, at least most of the application, offline. You connect to the Internet, download your latest feed subscription’s updates, get offline, and you’re still able to read the feeds that you’ve cached on your local system. What’s more is that you are able to flag those items and Google Reader will sync with your Google Reader account once an Internet connection is available."

What most amazes me about this? The fact that technology similar to this has existed for years in the form of BBS client software! (I used to run a BBS back in the day.)

That said, this is a great article and I agree that this will bring a new facet to our lives on the web.

Re: An overview of Skitch

Great review and how can I get a copy?! Folks want to see something interesting about you, not how many flowers you're growing.
- much like in Flickr comments, it is not good practice to leave bright, flashing, glowing or noisy things on peoples' Facebook walls.
- Consider that not everyone is interested in the latest thing, e.g. money making, click getting, chick wooing, scheme. Having thousands of followers is just a statistic. Having 100 dedicated relationships that can be turned into help, inspiration, and dinner dates is something worth measuring, but only in respect to its self.

Personally, my # of contacts has grown rapidly recently but the number of real relationships is not growing in proportion to that. I dislike running across an interesting story on /. for example, only to read the link and it points to a blog. Open the full blog and find it points to an earlier post on the blog, and so on. No actual link to the website or company blogged about is provided.

I'm not sure if that qualifies as shody journalism, but it certainliy makes it hard for me to take them seriously. Heck, if I'm going to blog about something Google or MS does, I could at least link to that company's own news release. If I'm just ranting about someone else's opinion, then I link to their blog post or article.

Anyway, though I sometimes have a hard time keeping up, at least you provide links. It would sure make things easier at work to get working webpages. Since the inclusion of the ability to publish html from Word, folks have been able to create any old crap.(No offense, probably their fault as much as anything.) But the big reason is that it hides what it is doing, and they feel what they don't see doesn't hurt.

I'm truly shocked to read the quotes above though, even from Microserfs. For a minute I'm tempted to believe you made those up just to humor 'those that hate Microsoft'. Good grief. :)

In our day and age, the idea of forming any kind of real relationship is dead. I'm not going to blame tech for that, but the age of instant this and that, I believe, sometimes leads folks, like my son, into the instant relationship mode.

It's like every relationship folks want to form, they want to make sure it has a dispose module built in.

Take care, stay strong, pray,
Todd

Re: Missed big HR meeting (MyMicrosoft is now improved)

So spill the beans already! Maybe the problem is that too many male bloggers write about techy things and aren't in touch with their feelings.

Or maybe, just maybe, men and women, IN GENERAL, are made up differently, and normative behavior for one sex is slightly different than for the other?! Oh the heresy.

Personally though, I could stand to see more quality bloggers (note that I wish I was one.) and less worry about race/sex/color/creed balance.

Re: Jaiku/Twitter/Facebook/Kyte/Plaxo = something happening you should pay attention to

Robert,
Great high speed intro and call to arms! I'm already digging in on a couple of those. Like your earlier post about Plaxo, I adopted that when it first came out and came to hate it. Jaiku and Twitter have their place, but I seriously need to recruit more friends to either one.

For Facebook, it is easy to see what you pointed out. The profile page with anything and everything is a bit busy but can be a lot fun, and it allows me to see all the things someone is into and doing at the same time.

Thanks for the quickie post and the encouragement to try Plaxo again.

Re: Funny N95 vs. iPhone video

Not a novel concept but it made it's point. I have added lots of new blogs to my regular reading, yours included, and what I enjoy best is no longer getting the latest tech news but the feel that some posts give me of sitting on a conversation.

Your posts have taken on a more relaxed and friendly tone over the last year, more mature in some aspects. That's a bigger draw for me than finding out you scooped the Plaxo thing. That said, I enjoy a good review that's not just the hype. (why a lot of blogs seem redudant)

Thanks Robert and btw, I've been enjoying your presence on Facebook. I'm following you and others to get the conglomerate of what you do online and what you like. It's been helpful for finding stories that interest me in real time.

Yes, FriendFeed is fast. About the UI though, have you heard if there is another interface coming? One perhaps more interactive. Personally can't wait to see what comes next since I'm enjoying using it already.

Thanks for the ideas and have a safe trip.

Re: Adding Google Friend Connect is an example of how hard it is to join the 2010 web

Well, I've used FTP for years, so that wasn't a stumbling block for me. That said, it sure is for most folks. Especially those that do one-click blog installs or even had someone do it for them.

Google should definitely do up a widget on this. Seems straightforward enough.

On the other hand, I've seen almost zero value from this being on my blog, or anyone else's. Where is it going? I see a previous comment mentions future functionality but for right now it's a glorified visitor roll call.

PS. If you don't know your FTP info, check the FAQ on your hosting site, or your account information there. Often mentioned there.

Re: Why Merriam-Webster Should Make “Social Media” A Verb (or Advanced Facebooking For Stunt Doubles)

@Ria - thanks for the intro and the plug.
Really enjoyed this blog post tonight. Wow. Why does this sound like so many conversations I've heard.

My day job employer even has signs up reminding us about the cost of advertising but how that leads to more income. Freaky.

But that mentality has definitely carried over into how companies and even individuals treat their social networking presence.

So many seem to believe that it's enough to have a presence and be in the bubble of social networking/media. They believe that gathering enough followers, 'friends', and connections will in its self lead to some magic response or involvement from those connections with no other actions required.

This belief and behavior is epidemic in my opinion. So many people are only going far enough to 'connect' and then they never go beyond that. It surprises me that relatively few people that connect online, even with very close local connections, really want to establish a deeper relationship or even meet in person.

I'm embarrassed to say that I'd forgotten solid principles about networking that I used daily when I was in the Navy. Being a System Analyst for the last 8 years has allowed me to use some people skills but very few networking needs arise.

What I'd like to do is teach and encourage people to actively network. To go beyond collecting names, countries, and 'colleagues' and get to becoming friends and partners. Beyond that even, I'd love to see people realize more value in their connections but that's only going to happen if they get off their tails and get active.

First steps should include determining where the network they've gathered overlaps with their own personal and organizational goals. And for that network to be analyzed beyond the 1st layer. LinkedIn has this as a great selling point that you can navigate your extended network and find a way to get to someone that is spot on for where you need to get to.

Another first step is yours above. Thank your followers. Even more basic is appreciating your friends and connections. Let them know you appreciate them and beyond that to give them something of value. Sometimes that value can be a smile and a thank you, but more so things that impact their reality.

For a company there are tons of possibilities, including coupons, offers, collaborative social media projects, collaborative real world projects, and more.

For individuals, its pinnacle is face time. I recommend getting there with all of the people in your network that's it's possible to do so with.

Me? I'm not only waiting for someone to plan events these days, but I'm getting them organized, helping with them, and pitching them to others. I use my blog, my Twitter stream, Facebook and more to stir it up. My postcard project, http://www.toddrjordan.com/thebroadbrush/postca..., is just another avenue to reach out to folks, to make it personal. Best thing? It's cheep.

Bonus tip: Better imperfect and sincere over perfect quality but plastic.

Enough of this for tonight. Keep in touch.
@tojosan on Twitter.

Re: How @problogger, @guykawasaki, @timoreilly and others use Twitter - Summed up by @paddydonnelly

As an avid Twitter use, blogger, and social media gad about, this really sparks my interest. I tweet with a couple of these folks off and on, but none on a regular basis.

As to my thoughts?
I'm with Brogan; Twitter is a brand, there'll be others. Once M$ comes out with one built in, that'll be the one favored by millions.

Has it meant less blogging? Or detracted? On the contrary, it's driving me and others to write more than ever. 140 is just not enough to share a great idea. You can only give the gist or a link there.

Does it add value though? Heck yeah. Lots of things shared with me that I'd never get to see if I just waited on it turning up in Google or via link to a link on someone's blog.

About retweets, I'd say they're a blessing and curse. They have power but it's easily abused power. Some folks' entire tweet stream is just RT this or that. Often people get carried away linking and retweeting their own links.

Because of the high volume of retweets, some folks are actually ignoring those from just anyone. They'll want to see them from just the rockstars. That's a whole other issue not even mentioned here, though Guy touches on it briefly.

Cheers to a good read.
Todd

Re: Welcome to The St. Louis Social Media Report

It's exciting times! And they aren't about me. I'd love to think folks get hooked on them and continue them on their own.

St. Louis SEO, i'd love to see folks host them on other days and times. Greg's idea to do something more formal is a must. These Friday events are meant to be informal and an introduction to the idea of regular gatherings and sharing.

The Friday works out great for some, not so great for others. Heck, Thursday might be better for most, but not for me. If someone wants to take them to Thu, I'd encourage them to step up and rock on. I'll be supporting them in spirit when I can't attend.

My next project is going to spin off to some breakfasts, less scheduled, and still informal.

For the small biz events, I say we should schedule one in July Greg and make it happen.

Re: Postmortem on St. Louis’ Largest Tweetup Ever

The key things to success of a tweetup:
you show up, someone else shows up, you have fun, meet people

bonus:
lots of people, good food, good drinks

This had everything but 'lots', and I'd say the number that did show up was plenty.

Was Rex a little out in front of his own popularity? Could be. Could be too he picked a really lousy night and the people that did turn up constitutes a fine amount.

I say the more tweetups the better as long as they don't suck. This one did not suck.

I didn't attend with the anticipation of it actually being the largest. For me it's always about connecting and breaking bread together.
