Absolutely. You want to control your domain. I'll actually add those points to my post. Thanks for the reminder, Michael.

in The Bonsai Method of Social Media Management on Social Media Explorer
Great analogy, Jason. Would it be ironic if I say I probably don't have time to tend to a bonsai tree?

Kat wrote it, D. But yes it is. And yes, it would be ironic I suppose. Guess it all depends on how important and which bonsai tree is to you.
KatFrench
It would be ironic if you meant it literally, because bonsai tending was one of your personal hobbies.
If you mean it figuratively, then it's not ironic, grammatically speaking. It does however mean that you have not yet realized that you have to tend the metaphorical bonsai in order to recoup more time. Egg, meet chicken. Chicken, egg.

in Twitter as a news tool: A case study on Mathew's comments
Matthew - It's really cool how we were able to use Twitter to break the story, and that people actually thought of contacting us.
On a personal note, I went to school in Buffalo, and I always looked forward to my forays over to Toronto, where I picked up the Globe and Mail!

Very cool indeed, Daniel. Thanks for the comment -- and for being a long-time Globe and Mail fan as well :-)

Kieran - A Digg for video? Brilliant!
But seriously, figuring out the Digg algorithm, at least from a SMM perspective, would be like SEOers discovering the Google algorithm. I really wonder if it would be changed.

in Vast and grand, monumental - Should Links Open In New Windows? on Vast and grand, monumental
I disagree as well. I think that it's actually a worse user experience to take people off of your site. Say you were to scroll around a site after checking out another. You're three, four clicks into the site and probably will click "Back" three or four times. (If you watch usability tests, you'll see that most people rarely use the "Recent Pages" list.)
Why make it take multiple clicks to get back when it could only take one: The little "X" in the top right corner of the window

Mollie - Psht.
Katie - Ouch. Let's see if Mollie comes back.
Todd - Definitely agreed. Unfortunately, with the fast-paced nature of the media, local guys like Royko and Breslin become less relevant, I believe. Mark Konkol and Mark Brown over at the Sun-Times are trying, but there's just no comparing these guys to Royko.

in Tidbit of the Day: The outdoor marketer’s oversight on Daniel B. Honigman's site
Martin -
Thanks so much for your insightful (and kind) comment.
I was having a conversation earlier with a colleague of mine, and the reason marketers can't think about anything long-term is because:
1) They're trying to show quick ROI, and as a result...
2) ...are trying to keep their jobs.
Make no mistake; marketers are trying to show the financial folks that their campaigns are worth spending money on. There's always something quicker and cheaper, but in the long run, it will hurt your brand. I've learned that much so far just reporting on the marketing profession.
Anyway, I hope you come back to my page soon. Let's talk.
