in Procter & Gamble Doesn’t Understand Social Media on Marketing Pilgrim
Hey guys - I work closely with P&G on social and emerging media and I can say from first hand experience that they do get the issues. The hardest part in the social network space is the execution. P&G is out there testing, trying new things, experimenting and working with users to evolve how we communicate TOGETHER. They’re working to be part of the evolution of Social instead of watching from the sidelines.

It’s also worth noting that P&G is a large company with over 300 brands, every single one is different: different products, different markets, different customers, different connection points, different conversations and metrics for success. There is no "one-size-fits-all" solution or even a template we can use for any given brand. But P&G’s brands are putting time, effort and commitment into Social because they want to find ways to bring it to life in ways that meaningfully connect with their consumers and that make sense for their business.

ok - wow - i am humbled and yes - I really stink at keeping up with my posts, but thanks for recognizing that it is indeed because it is tough to balance the "doing" with the "writing". I also try to point out new stuff -cause heck there are A LOT of smart folks wirting great stuff and well - I don;t want to just repost the same old stuff.

JasonFalls Honored you would stop by, Deb. Didn't meet you at SXSW, but saw enough of your talks to know I needed to follow you more closely. Thanks for the wisdom.

Chris - so timely,so true. I have been working on just this bridge for the past 5+ years [as you know] - reminding the echo chamber of the world outside and the world outside of the beauty, potential and work involved in the social web. Too many miss the motivations underlying the features/tools/communities - no, i cannot "make you a viral video", or press a button and poof you have a sense of purpose. Frankly, as current headlines demonstrate most people have bigger issues in their lives than how many people follow them on twitter. It is the motivations and what we GET out of our efforts as people that drive the current features/tools/commuinities. As - "technology changes, human's don't". Keep on keeping on man.

Great post. I am increasingly shocked by companies who create features masquerading as companies without asking is this viable? who would use this outside my 10 friends? What are the benefits? How dies it fit into their daily lives?

Chris - great article. I have been thinking a lot about the impact this is having on memory and behavior and etiquette and relationship. The issue will be how we balance added inputs with expected outputs. I remember reading an article about the 1950's housewife - where the new products were going to save her time and enable her to spend more time with the family - alas all it did was raise the bar on how clean and perfect her home needed to be!

in Finding, Measuring and Becoming an Influential Blogger on Pravda on Media and Technology
Hi Kfir - good post. I find it really interesting that there was not too much mention of WHAT people are saying the IDEAS. Right now we are living in a world of numbers - which is son one dimensional. I say - enuf with the alpha blogger technorati numbers driven stuff. I know plenty of "bloggers" who write once in a blue moon but when they do *everyone* listens. That is because their blog is a manifestation of their ideas and work in other places. I say have a passion and point of view and the rest will follow. I am frankly very tired of the twitter spam of "tinyurls" pointing people back to their own posts. There was a time when you discovered a new blog for its ideas not just cause everyone said it was influential. The true value of "influence" is when other people talk about what you write or say - oh wait that is what cross-linking is all about...;)

Also - their is no such thing as *a* blogger today - I use the phone am I a "phoner"? There are mommy bloggers and journalists, tabloid writers and academics - a blog is a tool.

sad - this is about control. They still feel the need to control - as if bringing everyone to their site makes it better - they have such great passionate owners/fans out there across all the hubs - but they insist on corralling. Reminds e of the old fable about hugging the bird till it chokes - let it breathe out there and be free.

in Marketing is NOT Social Media-Social Media is NOT Marketing on Chris Brogan
Chris - love the analogy of carpenter vs hammer!

I will add that the rules of the road are changing - for now everyone views the initial impact of social media as it relates to marketing [kinda like how websites were just marketing brochures till someone woke up to selling stuff thru em.;) ]

The true impact of all this social media stuff is much deeper than marketing - it is business changing. But --heh - you already know that [jumping off soapbox!]

in If Communities are Just Marketing Pools on Chris Brogan
great post indeed and something I do A LOT of thinking about. One of the issues we are dealing with in this current moment in time is that we dont have the right words for "friends" & "community" in the online sense. Just as web pages were never pages. Friends online are different than 3D friends (not better or worse, deeper or more superficial) just different. Same holds rue for community. I get very tired with people constantly comparing the word community online and offline and arguing with people who say you cant possibly have XX [insert ridiculous high number here] friends online. I cant have 5K friends in the traditional sense of the word but I can have [insert ridiculous large number again] connections that may come to my aid, teach me, introduce me and who knows what else.
