in Blackberry Social Network: BBM on Marketing
I realized the power of BBM when my sister (who had just graduated college) decided not to take a free iPhone (it was a gift) because she'd have no way to talk to her friends. :)

EricFriedman Exactly. It is that type of lock-in RIM has going for them right now, but
have to pivot into value across O.P.P. (other platforms & phones :) )

Very few people notice that (or at least comment on it). I'm kind of amazed it doesn't exist more places. I really believe that it raises the level of dialog.

in 5 dollar, 5 dollar _____! on Matt Daniels: dot Com
Just to be clear, I wasn't saying that package design and branding have no affect on purchase behavior. I actually think package design is probably the single biggest factor. More what I was suggesting was that so called "good design" doesn't always lead to higher sales and that most of the things people critique logos on are dumb.

in Social Media Is Still Only Social If You’re Alone on The Toad Stool by Alan Wolk

Alan Wolk Thanks Noah. That story (about a woman who was more or less
quarantined during a long illness and used Facebook to stay in touch
with family and friends) is exactly why social media can be a really
great thing for people who are otherwise isolated, either in extreme
situations like that one or even for people whose jobs are fairly
solitary in nature where social media serves as a daily water cooler.

It only becomes awkward when there are other people in the room and we
ignore them to address our online friends. And having been one of
those online friends, it's awkward on that end too, since it's hard
not to be aware of the dynamics.

I'm happy to report that thanks to my comment Aiaiai contacted me and are sending me a new pair. Looks like my email bouncing was a freak occurrence.

I had a pair. They stopped working in three months and none of the email addresses on the Aiaiai website worked. Needless to say I was disappointed and have since moved on to a new brand of headphones.

With that said, I'm with you that they look cool and sound nice.

michaelsurtees that sucks on both accounts, i'm surprised to read that. they seem pretty durable – if i can get at least four months use of them that would be on par for me.

The new Jetblue terminal at JFK actually has a lot of them ... Pretty sure it's the first terminal I've been in that's been built in a Wifi world.

in Did Motrin Suffer From NASCAR Blindness? on The Toad Stool by Alan Wolk
That's fair, and I admit I don't know the vocal minorities of moms very well at all. But I don't know if this applies across the board. I think often vocal minorities are just that: Vocal minorities and as long as they're not taking away from your product (like claiming that you have poisoned it) I'm not sure how much sway they really have (especially in the case of responding to an advertisement).

First off let me couch my comments with I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to kids and didn't understand what was offensive about that commercial after reading this entry twice and watching it twice.

Okay, now that that's out of the way, let me offer a flip side: Couldn't this also be a vocal minority who has decided to pick up on something and none of it really means anything? Are a bunch of people screaming on the internet really representative or is it just herd behavior? (I don't know the answer to these questions.)

I've been meaning to write an entry (maybe I'll get around to it today) about how I think that people spend too much time listening to the people that don't really matter. I was going to use Microsoft as an example. They went away from their Seinfeld thing because a bunch of people in the ad industry went all crazy on them. Even if you assume it went further and mainstream folks were discussing Seinfeld/Microsoft, isn't that a good thing in the long run? Isn't that what you want your commercials to do?

rascalpants Noah,

your mistake here is that you underestimate the power and influence these fringe groups have on society. The AP crowd are the same ones that will conduct breastfeeding "nurse ins" in the entrence of a Starbucks and Barnes & Nobles and get on the 10 pm News.

And when the same cliche of people that create and design ads and media get in an uproar about something they dont like, they use the same skills to conjure up negative movements as they do to created the same positive "iPod movements". Look at all of the "herd" of people that jumped on THAT bandwagon.

And the saying that all press is good press is not true in every situation... there are people that still will not eat Tuna or Nestle, and they dont even know why.

And i have to say that although I am a "PC"... the recent Mac ads that say that just not saying the word Vista doesn't change the product were brilliant.

rp

PS. Moms were pissed because they made it sounds like wearing your baby was like waring a Prada bag... and while very pretty, a baby is much more than leather and fancy buckles... oh yeah... and that whole having to have a baby strapped to you to be an "Official Mom" was upsetting to working moms at all.
