in Doriot Quote Of The Day on A VC
That's why it's critically important for an entrepreneur to pick the investors for his first company very carefully. To be successful, the partnership has to be symbiotic. If the entrepreneur is tech-savvy but not a finance guy, a bookkeeper isn't enough, the venture firm's CFO should be leveraged to provide guidance and training to the CEO. If the entrepreneur is smart and a visionary, but lacks management skills, the venture firm should be providing guidance on leadership, management, hiring, firing, morale, etc. Some of it you hope the entrepreneur already has, but everybody benefits from re-learning or being reminded of what makes great companies operate and execute successfully.

And as this quote points out, it's important that the partnership maintain its level of involvement as long as the firm is invested. Too often I see investors suffer from ADD and get bored with a company (even if it's doing well, heck, especially if its doing well) and stop paying much attention. The outcome is rarely positive on the company. An active, involved board and venture firm provides far more value than cash. At least, that's been my experience.

Good quote though, I've got the book on its way. :-)

We're always working on improving the search results page. Curious what you find so horrible about the search page. I think you'll find the results are similar to Googles.

in OpenDNS Review on BestTechie.net
Wow your review is awesome. You did a fantastic job explaining our service and explaining DNS. I sent it to my parents. :-)

You speak clearly, and are well prepared. In other words, you just did better than like 80% the journalists we work with. Seriously.

Please stay in touch and make sure we get your name on our distribution list to get notified about new services before we launch them.

Fred,

I'm surprised. Regardless of how large the market share of Outlook is, and it's huge, history has been crystal clear about what happens to companies who try to deeply integrate with Microsoft products. They either get locked out, or much of their functionality replicated in a future version by MS. It's the typical MS "Embrace, extend and extinguish" strategy. I wish Xobni the best of luck, but history is not on their side.

Breck I was also very impressed with Xobni. I think I may go back to Outlook after 3 years of Gmail just to try it out. I particularly like the idea of how it shows you graphs of your message history with a person.

in OpenDNS Shortcuts (are) were More Like Detours on Zoli's Blog
Your point is well taken though, we can strive to make that faster. In theory, it should be a 150ms delay. The benefit of the shorthand outweighs 150-200ms, but not a number of seconds. I'll let you know when we have it fixed.

Hi Nabeel,

Thanks for letting us know. If you'd email me a traceroute to the IPs you're using that'd help me a lot.

in Amazon Associates aStore, Build Your Own Amazon.com on Laughing Squid
All this talk of Amazon being evil and mega-corporate is total BS. There was a time when Amazon was the underdog trying to change the world of books. And they did. And they do a damn good job and provide a fantastic service to consumers. If your local bookstore can't compete then maybe it shouldn't compete.

Le Video beats Netflix for me because they carry the weird shit that I like to watch. They also provide me instant gratification.

The only difference between a sellout and a not-sellout is the presence of a buyer. You don't have to break someone's back to be successful and I don't think putting Amazon (and LS, etc) into the same pile as Halliburton does anything to support your arguments. LS does amazing things to change the world, some subtle some direct, but all in the spirit of innovation and improving the way things are. I have no doubt Amazon would see themselves the same way.

in OpenDNS Launches “Shortcuts” on I Bought a Mac
We have an internal ticketing system called "trac" that we use. so I type "trac [ticket#]" and go directly there about a million times a day.

I do "office [some address]" and get directions from my office to another site pretty frequently too.

Nice post and image you made at the top.

I'm glad setup was easy. Did you try out the bookmarklet? If you go to a page like finance.yahoo.com and do a search, then click the bookmarklet on the search results page you'll see how to create an "advanced" shortcut. :-)

in OpenDNS and Google a Phisher’s Delight? on Incoherent Babble
I think there's a lot of truth in what you write and a lot that folks like us at OpenDNS can do to prevent this from occurring. There is already an implicit level of trust folks like Google and OpenDNS have and we work hard to earn and maintain that trust. Things like this are of the utmost concern to me and I'm definitely open to a discussion of what we can do with more intelligence in the DNS and on the network to remedy these kinds of hypothetical situations.

The performance of CacheFly blows something like S3 out of the water. CacheFly is running a major globally redundant TCP anycast network. It's run by some really really smart folks at the cutting edge of CDN and networking technologies. Matt Levine is the guy to talk to over there.

I am jealous. Nice writeup.

Note to Google'ers reading this. I will take a day off of OpenDNS and come talk about Anthropology and the DNS just to hang out on the campus for a day. I will not pontificate, I will educate. I will probably want an It's It ice cream sandwich. I might use the bathroom. That is all.
