Drew,
Great post. I share many of your sentiments. I'll stay in the blissful state too, I guess.

Man,
I know just how tough it is to give up music, it's really, really tough. I miss it a lot and from what I read above, I'm guessing you will too. That's life, though, for some of us I guess. Enjoy the time off, man. Take care of yourself and your fam. And have fun w/that dissertation.

in Simone Weil on Marriage on Notes From Off Center
Weil is a fascinating mind!!! You're right she is radical. One of my Church History profs asked us in class once what we thought about her. I had just began a Sr. Minister position and I replied, "To me, she sounds like a pastor's worst nightmare." If anyone has read her stuff, I think they'll get this comment and not take offense at it. My prof laughed for a good bit after that remark.

Skemono STOP THE HATE SPEECH

as far as i'm concerned, nobody is acting like a bigot more than you. you parade yourself as open-minded but in all actuality, your type of hateful, closed-minded fundamentalism is the scariest thing i can imagine. check yourself!!! kind of odd that Drew's last words are "you decide" and then you come on here bashing the first person who disagrees with your ideology. as far as i can see, you're not willing to let me or anyone who disagrees with you "decide". again, check yourself!!!

Drew,
I do find it kind of odd that in this post about hate speech and silencing it, you keep skemono's comments posted. just saying.

After reading your second post, I do agree that James makes some good points and I do agree that gentleness is important. However, I do not agree that lobing your neighbor means condoning something you think they're doing wrong.

I think you have set up a false dichotomy here. You can't just take someone's words and replace them with other words like you have done; in doing this, you are totally taking things out of context. Just as well, there is a clear difference between choosing a homosexual lifestyle and being African American or black by default. There is simply no comparison. If you had substituted "white" for gay or african american, it still wouldn't have worked, even if it was placed on the lips of a black person. I think your dichotomy is false and incredibly misconstrued. Furthermore, I am a little troubled by the attempt to do away with free speech--however much you might think her wrong--by labeling it "hate speech". Just some thoughts.

in Who Benefits from Salvation?: III on Notes From Off Center
Drew,
Good thoughts, though I disagree with the overall conclusion. Just to clarify, on that quote of James', that is off. I have never attempted to argue that Abe wasn't saved. In fact, I say he probably was/is, a few times. Instead, I've been trying to show that Paul wasn't trying to make an argument that Abe was saved. Instead, Paul was simply saying he was righteous, which I see as two different things. I think, in fact, this is the more natural reading for James if anyone. I think Paul is clear on the fact that there are righteous persons outside of Christ. Lest we forget that Abe was a Gentile, the point Paul is making--at least in part--is that God made a promise to Abe. The promise, though, focuses not on Abe but one of Abe's descendants, namely, Jesus Christ. The whole reason Paul mentions Abe then, is as a means to an end, to eventually end up saying: What God promised back then--the uniting of all persons to Himself--has now come to fruition in Jesus (and Jesus alone!).

I think you're framing the issue/question wrong when you ask if the efficacy of the cross (I would add to this the resurrection and perhaps the ascension too) is enough or if a confession must accompany it. I say this because what happened to Jesus was enough on His behalf but there has to be the response of each person or we lapse into universalism. So, this is why (as I spell out in my most recent reply) why belief, confession and lifestyle are certainly necesarry on our behalf. What Jesus did and what we do must be wedded together otherwise salvation is simply salvation waiting to be grasped and lived out; in this case each person has not entered into right standing with God, it's like it's pending.
