If you're interested, a natural "cure" for poison ivy is jewel weed, which, as luck would have it, often grows near poison ivy. After exposure, pick the jewel weed (stems, flowers - when available - and stems), crush it and smear the "juice" in the affected area. It works well for bug bites, too.

You can also make a "tea" by steeping the plant parts in boiling water for five or ten minutes. After the "tea" cools, I put it in ice cube trays and freeze it for times of year when it's not growing.

I can't attest to whether or not jewel weed really does work on poison ivy. It's a native herbal cure I was taught, but I've either never been exposed, or I'm already immune to poison ivy. But I can say that it works well on soothing bug bites.

Like the article mentions, we keep jewelweed in the freezer. Mosquitoes (and biting black flies) are horrible up here, and it's good to have something to combat the itchies ;).

I was doing a little research yesterday on this new health care reform that Pres. Obama is trying to push through. I'm not liking a lot of what it is proposing, but I needed to know more, and so I read a bit about his most recent attempts to rally support. I found his statements rather irritating. His argument was, basically, "well, if you don't vote FOR my reforms, things are going to be much worse." I really bristled at his strong-armed fear-mongering. What's funny is that while I was doing my sleuthing around, I happened upon an article that likened what's happening in our government - right now - to the rise of the Nazi party. Pretty scary stuff, but not really anything new. Naomi Wolf has a really great piece entitled 'The End of America', which is pretty sobering - and highly recommended viewing.

After I read several articles, I found a poll asking if Pres. Obama's comments re: the proposed health reform made me support it, and 54% of the respondents said "no." This seems pretty typical of what I've seen for a long time. The polls say "no" to the things the government is proposing - the "people" say "no" - and the government STILL passes them. It doesn't make sense.

For those folks who are still using a dishwasher (stop throwing things *grin*), 1:1 solution of baking soda (or Arm & Hammer washing powder) and borax works great in lieu of commercial detergents.

Just a little baking soda and a good, stiff scrub brush work great for cleaning the shower, too. My girls like it when I sprinkle baking soda on the shower floor and then pour vinegar over it - it's better than the "scrubbing bubbles."

Fantastic advice! I wish I'd had this kind of knowledge when I was twenty. I think things would have been vastly different for me. But the important thing is, I learned, and I couldn't agree with you more re: your first sentence. Getting out of the "money" economy is paramount for the "prepper." It is much more difficult to live a self-sufficient lifestyle if one needs a lot of money to pay bills.

We've been paying down our debt, and right now, it's the mortgage only, which, when the economy started tanking last year, and my husband's salary was cut by 1/3, really worked to our advantage. Three months later, we're living within (or slightly below) our means, we're paying all of our expenses - on time! -, we're able to make small repairs (like to our cars) if we plan ahead a little, and we haven't had to touch our savings. It feels good to know that we "can".

Anyway, long winded, but kudos to you.

Also, if you haven't seen the Simple Dollar, you might check it out. He, sometimes, has some good advice for being frugal, although he's not coming from a "prepper" mindset - so be forwarned that sometimes his ideas are a little too ... maintream/money economy driven :).

As a "locavore" food storage is just a way of life, especially up here in the chilly northeast, where our growing season is about three (good) months ;). I have a garden, raise some of my own meat, forage for some wild foods, visit the farm stands and farmer's market all summer, and spend a great deal of time preserving food for the winter.

But, it's ALWAYS a good idea to have some stored food - for everyone. We had a four-day power outage here in December 2008, and I know you guys there in KY had something similar happen earlier this year. Having stored food (and water) would have been really helpful, I'm sure. It was for us ;).

Fantastic ideas.

We were hit by an ice storm in December 2008 and lost power for four days. I was pleased by how prepared we were, and the area that I most impressed myself with was the laundry. I actually bought a wash tub and and antique wringer, and so when we lost power, I heated water on the woodstove for baths (in the wash tub that we put into the stand-up shower) and then used that water to wash clothes :). The best part was realizing how little I *needed* electricity to function day-to-day.

We bought the smallest generator we could find to have for things like powering the fridge and freezer. Although if we were to lose power for more than a week, I'd be taking the food out of the freezer and pressure canning it on the rocket stove outside ;).

Like a couple of other folks mentioned - in a "worst case scenario", I wouldn't want the attention the generator might attract, especially as I'm in a suburban area.

Great suggestions, Knine!

If I could offer a couple more: A magnesium firestarter works, and they're cheap and not terribly difficult to use . We have six of them (probably overkill :).

My husband is learning to start a fire with a bow drill, which takes a lot of practice and LOTS of patience.

Of course, we don't have to resort to those methods, unless we want to. Matches can be hand made. The key element in match making is salt peter, which can be made by straining urine through ash.

And while my husband is learning to use his bow drill, I've taken up a study of rocks and minerals so that in a pinch I can indentify flint. With a bit of flint and some steel, we'll have fire ;).

I think, for me, it all goes back to the idea that we need to be looking at some seriously primitive skills - just in case - and fire making and tending is one of those. Keeping a fire going 24 hours a day to heat a house when it's sub-freezing outside (and there is no other heat source) is no joke. It takes diligence and perserverance. I wonder how many folks realize how much work it is.

Another option is a cistern for those people who don't have a lot space. A simple concrete tank (like those used as septic tanks) buried in the ground could be used as a water cachement system (used in conjunction with rain spouts, for instance). With a hand pump or a simple bucket/pulley system the water would be accessible.

The bonus with this sort of system, especially for people who live in climates with below freezing temperatures is that it won't freeze like a rain barrel, thereby ensuring access to emergency water year round.

A very good resource for solar cooking is the book Cooking with the Sun by Beth Halacy and Dan Halacy. In addition to plans for a solar oven and lots of great recipes, they also have plans for a solar "hot plate" for things like heating up water for tea.

It's definitely worth the $10, if one is interested in learning to cook with the sun.

You might also mention that one can make some pretty tasty homemade granola bars with the oats, honey, dried fruit and cinnamon (... and a couple of other ingredients ;).

And granola bars are great "trail food" - although the ones I make don't last longer than a day or two in my house :).

I'm with Mike, though, when eating cooked oats as a breakfast cereal. I like a little milk or fresh (raw) cream added to my oats. Yum!

Another really great resource from another "survivor" is ClubOrlov. The author, Dmitry Orlov, witnessed Russia's collapse in the 1990's. He lived in the US, but had relatives in Russia, and so while he can't relate as personal experience as FerFal, he does offer some insights.

His book "Reinventing Collapse" is also very good - not for any useful "how to" information on dealing with the collapse (like FerFal), but for some good fodder for discussing the current events and where they might lead with people who may not, quite, see the writing on the wall.

Instead of a warmer you can keep a squirt bottle with a water

This is very much like a bidet, and instead of using it to moisten the wipes, you could actually spray it right on ... yourself ;), and clean off the bulk of the problem and use the wipe to dry. After I gave birth, I used this method because dry wiping with toilet paper was just too painful (oh, is that TMI?)

At the risk of sounding like a "greenie weenie" (*grin*), toilet paper is not one of my preps. When TSHTF, the last thing I'm going to worry about is toilet tissue (much to my husband's dismay. I've already asked him to switch - he's not interested ;). We'll be switching to cloth, and sooner rather than later. All of the other environmental benefits of switching aside, the fact is that toilet paper doesn't compost down as fast as ... the other stuff that goes into the toilet ..., and if we don't have the option of someone to pump our septic tank, then we probably don't want a whole lot of stuff in there. In fact, if we had to switch to a composting toilet or an outhouse, using TP in there isn't the best choice.

You are absolutely correct, Matt. Keeping a store of consumable items (like food and batteries) will save a bundle of money over the long-term, because most people who start stocking up will buy in larger quantities which are usually less expensive.

The other side of it is that if you have it in storage, you don't have to go to the store as often, and there's less chance of succumbing to impulse purchases.

I have to say that with the "free" equipment and cellular service (doesn't demand a land line)we thought that the $44.99 we are paying monthly seemed like a reasonable investment for our safety. What was crazy was the actual installation process. We were sold and installed on the same evening around 8pm, and it took two young techs coming from two seperate sides of town to get it done. The best part was having to fill the holes in the wall near my front entrance due to them "throwing" it up on the wall no where near where it was practical, and after we had identified where and how we wanted it placed (you know even with the light switch - pleasing to the eye). My husband also enjoyed going to his truck to pull the correct tools out for them to put the small holes in the sidewall of our doors for the connectors as to not have our doors damaged. Basically, we "helped" install our system after 8pm at night!

Now, let's talk about billing.... our contract says "bill monthly" but we get billed when
SAI (their billing agent) gets around to it, and most often it's done incorrectly. In the first six months of service we have been over-charged by more than $209.00, and customer service is a joke! On three seperate occasions I have sat on hold for a cumlative total of an hour or more, and still no resolution. Think you have the right to cancel if they are screwing up? Think again, if one more of those self righteous "reps" tells me to "read my contract" I'm going to go section 8 on them! Ladies and gentlemen, please do read the contract (front and back) it's two legal size sheets in very small print, and you pretty much waive your legal rights. DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO INSTALL ON THE FIRST VISIT. Let them leave the paperwork so you have time to really read it, no matter which alarm company it is. As for us, two and half more years in our "contract", and you best believe I'm sending the 60 day cancellation notice by certified mail - and most likely about six months in advance so there is no mis-understanding of our intent to stop service!

I have an underbite and having jaw surgery is one of my options to correct it, which would cost less than braces because insurance would pay for it since it is a skeletal issue and not cosmetic. Anyway, I have been putting it off, but I need to do something. I am a BIG chicken too. I like to be awake. I was awake when getting my wisdom teeth out too. I will be praying for you and I will be anxious to hear your thoughts. I don't know of anyone that has had this done. Take care.

We love smoothies w/vanilla yogurt, milk, and some fruit thrown in.

It has taken me a long time to really get this and at times I still fail. I have noticed that the first couple minutes of interaction between me and my husband or kids in the morning or when my husband gets home from work help set the tone for the day.

I am so w/you on the peanut butter and I really miss it. My son is allergic to peanuts/nuts, so we don't keep it in the house. Maybe that is a good thing for me though. :)

Great post, thanks for sharing this! How wonderful to have had a Titus 2 relationship like this. I have been meeting w/our pastor's wife for about 4 yrs. now and she reminds me of your friend. I have learned so much from her and she has changed my life in so many ways. Most importantly though I have gotten closer to the Lord. An article in The Age newspaper gave a brief outline of this ministers thinking and future direction. Whilst I do not know this gentleman personally, I do have concerns regarding his beliefs. The very basis of Christian belief is that Jesus was/is the Son of God, not just the son of a Jewish peasant, (as quoted by him in the Age newspaper 16 Sept 08) There were a number of other alarming false teachings in this article (available on the age website if you want to search for it). What this very prominent melbourne minister is saying does not measure to the truth of the bible. It is this that concerns me about his so called new faith.

I thought the weekend was great. I didn't mind the kids yesterday morning, it is good to have the whole family of God celebrating together!!

I would like to add 2 suggestions though.

1. The concert Saturday night was still predominately singing and band. What about fanning into flame the drama, more timbrels, more dance, instead of more of the same. The performers were musically excellent, but let's have variety. In my opinion the Alice Springs ladies were the best on the night - so simple yet profound, yet they only were given a short time.

2. What about dinner boxes on sunday lunch? We missed fellowship with others due to finding a venue to get some lunch. As we came from the country it was difficult to take our lunch with us. So feel missed a little in that regard.

Otherwise a great weekend.

NOt everyone is 'into bands'. I agree with first writer, to go out to an event, I would like to see a variety of the arts, not just sit and listen to Band music all night. I was at the MSB concert in Mryborough a few weeks ago, whilst musically it was great, and they are a great bunch of people. I did not find sitting through 2 hours of band music totally inspiring or spiritually uplifting. We, in The Salvation Army have talented people in many areas, let's not fall into the trap we did in the 50s and 60s and make brass bands the be all and end all.

I am a young individual. My fiance has a car that we do not drive on a regular basis. Before, his parents have paid for insurance, but now they have decided to cut back on costs. So now we are going to have to pay for the insurance. We were going to go carless since we already take public transport to get to work and school, but his parents pressured us to keep the car, even though it has been broken into already sitting in the apartment parking lot. The generation before mine still has this idea that if you dont have a car, then you are not contributing to society. I guess it has something to do with living in a town that has huge urban sprawl. I wonder if anyone else has a similar experience?

I just got one of these great little machines and WOW it is just what I have been looking for. It has a computer inside and you can hear the motor whirring around now and then. It's pretty simple to use if you read the instructions - and you have to read the instructions because after all - it's compost! Living and breathing and all. This is MUCH easier than my old outdoor tumbler.

They put the list of foods you can use right on the lid which I have never seen on any composter before. I was surprised about composting meat and fish and dairy - I guess it's because the thing gets really hot inside and kills off the bad stuff. It says no lemons and limes, but I called them (they actually answer their phone!) and they said a little is ok so long as you go easy on the acidity. The fan started out a little noisy but once the food gets in it calms down quite a bit and now I can't really hear it at all. Maybe it was hungry?

I got my first batch of compost out and it looks yummy! I am dying to use it but I have to wait until spring because my garden is basically dead this time of year. My only wish is that they hurry up and make a bigger one that I can use for my yard waste (the current one can handle about 5-10 dinner plates per day which is only enough for the kitchen scraps).

Oy. That's a hard call. I'm sure Chelsea really needs a little alone time, so personally, I would leave her in.

I think this happens a lot. An above average child suddenly starts acting average after being around other kids. Maybe you could just correct her and explain that's not how she's supposed to act. And also talk to the teachers to see if they can give her some more advanced work to do on her own. She may be very bored with it, since she already knows most of the stuff.

I think it's very very important to let her be around other kids at this age. It'll also help when she starts regular school because she'll be more used to a structured teaching environment (that's not mommy and daddy).

Even if she does average out, the same above average brain is in there, so don't worry about it too much at this point. Just keep teaching her things at home as well. Good luck!

Perhaps libraries should utilize digital books such as MobiStoies that can be viewed on ANY digital device with a screen, thus eliminating the need for using budgetary resources for hardware and avoiding the entire issue of proprietary readers. Services such as www.overdrive.com are geared towards multiple downloads that a library would offer. Take the equipment out of the equation and deliver the information.

In all of the information communications prior to the synchroblog we did try to deconstruct the notion that this is just a gap between Christian and gay ….. but referenced multiple gaps – certainly many among those who adhere to Christian faith as well as diversity of perspective among lgbtq folks. We also pointed to gay Christians, a diverse group as well, and that this isn’t about just two monolithic groups.

At the end of the day, I am grateful that the majority of posts contributed for the synchroblog were thoughtful, grace-filled, humble and hopeful. I am encouraged, particularly by the number of pastors and straight Christians who expressed openness and a teachable spirit.

Since I'm working on content a lot I don't have time to click much. I've noticed a lot of places I go when I comment have Entrecard which is really cool. It feels more prevalent now. Hmm, for me high-maintenance simply means spending alot to look and feel good, and unfortunately I dont see myself being high-maintenance and I do not feel it is wrong as long as he/she spends him/her own money :)

Great post. Really thought provoking and very similar to my own situation. kind of... we married extremely young and had a baby and another and so on right away. While my dh was able to get his degree I did not.

Staying home is important to me. But some days i wonder who I am. (think Les Miserables "Who Am I? Who am I? 24601...") waaaa!

With my youngest getting ready to start school I am beginning to think that my turn to go to school is coming too. But I'm not sure if that is what i want. With my oldest in middle school it seems that she needs me home (and mentally awake and aware) more than ever...

That is the worst part about the military for us. (okay, deployment is worse) And it doesnt' get any better as the kids get older...

We are at the point where some of our friends are getting out and starting a "real" life. It is a little sad. I wish I did a better job of keeping in touch.

what you're feeling is perfectly normal. I had worries and fears too before I got pregnant. My biggest was what if I get asthma attacks and my allergies worsen because of the pregnancy hormones. Actually am facing this right now. But I constantly ask my doctors about it (one of my sisters is a doctor) Everything seems to be under control.

Just take it one step at a time, Jade =) am sure you'll make a great mom and whatever happens, I assure you, you will enjoy motherhood!!
