Not sure I like any of the choices, but I said there's nothing BB can do to make me switch. That's because my business is really just Netflix's to lose. I think Netflix is fantastic--I don't really have any complaints beyond the inevitable minor tweaks I think of from time to time. Movies come in one day; I LOVE what I call the "MySpace factor," which allows me to see friends' collections and discuss movies online; and the website is much more helpful and intuitive, at least based on my (admittedly not very extensive) use of BB's.

Getting in-store rentals just doesn't matter to me. Browsing on Netflix's site is so fun and easy that it more than makes up for any in-store browsing enjoyment I ever got, and paying a tiny bit extra to ensure I've always got something around takes care of any lack of immediate gratification for me.

I fail to see the appeal at all of mailing in my Netflix tabs for free rentals. I'm not trying to squeeze out an extra movie without paying for it. I adjust my account plan regularly based on how many movies I'm watching at the time based on my schedule. It's not about the money--I feel like I'm getting a great deal from Netflix pretty much no matter what I pay. I just don't want to pay for more than I'm actually using.

Geez. This is practically a commercial for Netflix. I guess I'll stop now. Netflix just seems like the superior product to me. Unless they do something to piss me off, I'm just not interested in switching.

Re: Blockbuster Inviting Netflix Customers to Rent Movies From Stores for Free | Bob Caswell

I think davis freeberg nailed it for me--it's the going back that's the real pain. And Sean's point about being able to return mailed movies at the store, while apparently a great feature for him, doesn't mean anything to me. I do Netflix because I want to stay away from the store!

Re: iPod Alternatives? I'd guess columnist interest in the question has more to do with it.

Maybe he even made the question up himself to set up his own straw man who doesn't like an iPod (seriously, who doesn't love their iPod?!--there can't be that many people) just to throw in that "less satisfactory" remark . . . .

Re: Social Content vs. Big Media Content: Do You Have to Pick a Side?

The thing about the Digg community is that it's becoming only community and nothing else. It's a community of people trying to game the community more than anything--it's certainly not primarily about news or information. It's almost like a pyramid scheme, feeding off its own growth until the lack of substance catches up with it.

About the overall post, I don't think you necessarily need to pick sides in this. In a way, it's actually an exciting time for the whole media industry as it works to incorporate the Internet into new models of news and information distribution. I expect a lot of new things will rise and fall as different experiments succeed and fail.

Re: Wal-Mart Goes Digital Movies… Why Netflix May Dethrone Them Again

Right on. By the way, I just noticed today that Netflix already has its first movies available for streaming. The selection is still small, but it says more are being added every month.

Re: How I Used Blogging to Sell Computers.net for $155,000

Alexey and DeeJay, I think it was pretty good. So far B-R players have cost a lot more than HD DVD, so making one available in the same general price range is a huge step. Especially since the word is that Blu-Ray is slightly better technology (though in truth the two formats are remarkably similar).

But I don't know. I just can't pull the trigger yet on either. Blasted format wars! The most annoying thing of all is that combo players cost more than buying two separate units. Luckily I haven't felt the need yet--few of the movies I watch are in either format (a quick look at my Netflix queue shows just 2 movies in my first 20).

Re: HD DVD Still Winning Price War vs. Blu-ray: Player & 10 Movies $219

Well, it's true I'm talking mostly about the greater capacity, which always seems to become an issue during the lifespan of a storage format. And the greater high-end capacity qualifies it as a slightly better technology, I think (your argument against it is not on technology grounds but market-share grounds!).

But I don't think the differences are anything that deserves a whole lot of discussion--certainly not enough to take up the several comments it already has with the addition of this one.

Re: HD DVD Still Winning Price War vs. Blu-ray: Player & 10 Movies $219

Yeah, let's do stop.
