What? Questions? | Tofugu.com

College is pretty much a four year vacation. The reason why Japanese kids study so dang hard for entrance exams is that their society heavily emphasizes on the name of the university you attend, not your GPA, major or anything else. College level work is cakewalk compared to studying for the entrance exams. So in essence, the path of your life is determined by the name of the university. Employers don't really care what skills you have as they'll will provide the necessary training. I mean, the students already proven themselves by studying like maniacs to get into that prestigious university. An example: Todai students are almost guaranteed to get high-level job such as in the government (as bureaucrats, considered to be one of the highly honored positions) or upper managerial positions in the private industry.

Re: Beginning Japanese I: Where do self-teachers start?

MASU
MASEN
MASHITA
MASENDESHITA

Re: MoMu and Ultraman sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G

I wonder if he wears that costume in bed...

Nevermind.. Heck, it'll probably be worst, since most of the features touted won't work at all.

All the features that make it better depends SOLELY on the cell phone provider. They support fast upload/download speeds because of the wireless spectrum + technology provided by the cell service (DoCoMo, Softbank, etc). Same goes for the coupon scanners and TV tuners. These are provided by the cell service companies. The framework is in place and this allows the cell phone companies to make their god-like phones. Maybe we should start wishing that companies like AT&T;, T-Mobile, etc provide services equal to that of the Japanese cell carriers. Then and only then we might get phones that are on the same level. The cell phone companies are limited to whats provided to them.

So the question "iPhone or Japanese phone?" should be revised to "AT&T; or DoCoMo?" I'd choose DoCoMo.

Oh funny fact, DoCoMo owns a sizable share in AT&T.; I wish they could do something about the laughable cell service here.

Re: Half of Japanese Authors have Meaty thumbs

@Ramaja

That is true. The culture among the end users have influence on what is being provided and thus the provider (supposably) accommodates to those needs by providing the technical services. But ultimately in the end it is up to the provider to provide those services as they are the ones that have the resources to execute it.

It just seems to me the Japanese cell providers are willing to take more risks with random services like coupon scanners and built-in credit cards. I honestly don't think there was a demand for these services, but they took the risk and the market accepted it. In the US the providers are very conservative.

It really depends on how you look at it I suppose.

Re: “Mama Sucked out my Nose Mucus;” Child Protection Agency Works Overtime

"It’s not a pill so us American’s won’t deal with it."

But would American's deal with inserting pills through their rectum?

Re: How to Win at UFO Catchers

@Ste

Awesome! I have no problems with that, except for the fact they can use high power weaponry to kill the whales, which is something I don't agree with. Anyway, the point is this is happening in the US, but it seems the focus are on the Japanese whenever this hits the news or some social linking website like Digg. Which is fair considering the magnitude the Japanese are gathering the specimens. But at the same time shouldn't we "clean" up our act before we go attacking others?

Whale consumption in Japan seems to be a cultural thing, which personally I have no problems with. It seems people are pissed off because they are using the guise of "research" to harvest these mammals and think they could get away with it. In addition, they are breaking whale hunting laws by using a loophole. Using such a blatant lie is an insult.

In conclusion, to me it isn't so much the whaling that makes me think Japan in a negative way, but the obvious lies they try to pass off to the international community just to fulfill their gluttony.

Re: Tofugu’s Japan Week in Review 1: Fukuda, Elevators, & Mochi Death

Mochi kills old people who can't chew properly.

Re: Use Mixi.jp to improve your Japanese (and make some friends, too!)

In for one..

Hey, is that your yakuza friend in your profile pic?

Re: Fuji inspired X-Seed 4000 to house 1 million people.
