I've been trying to discover the ultimate brain/consciousness/technology parallel too. Would "culture" in place of community, or is there something specific about a community that makes it a better fit?

I think the idea of bringing it back to a 'community' as opposed to the generic 'culture' is that it humanizes it a bit and brings it 'closer' to a network of friends, allies, confidants, and colleagues - it's not as nebulous (or spacey as McKenna's vision;).
