Obviously Bangkok is where everything is going on, but people here don't seem too fussed whatsoever. It's reassuring that there hasn't been any violence or any major uprising. It seems to be a very organised and calm coup d'etat, which usually would seems to be a bit of an oxymoron.

Re: Stepping into Adulthood

Happy 21st birthday! I've got to disagree. I'm fine with Creative running with ZENcast or any other term that they come up with, but Podcast has already has a clear etymology. Hell, even AC is head of the company that has tried to rename them Podshows. This may be because words are my job, but I think it's very rude (at the least) to redefine a common term, even to make it more accessible.

Words survive initial misinterpretation. If I said I bought a new record or album, you would assume I bought a CD or MP3s, not the vinyl that the words refer to. I think that podcasting will survive too. We were both there listening when the phrase was coined in the early days, there was enough trouble finding a word that worked then, let alone trying to change it now.

I'm not sure it's marketing to iPod owners, more that it's that the original idea was to push files onto the iPod. The whole idea of AC and Winer's setup was to automagically pull a file and load it into iTunes. This makes Apple and the iPod and integral part of the history of the movement, for better or worse, and this has been reflected in a lot of the stuff that has followed; podcasting, iPodder, Podshow etc.

I say let it be, if ZENcasts or Podshows take over or if the Personal On Demand becomes popular, so be it. But let the iPod etymology stand. Words change over time, that's the fun part of English (just look at queer or sick), but companies shouldn't be pushing the evolution.

Re: Simon Goudie » Maintenance Mode

Granted, but where are they customers? It's all been archived at http://www.deltaonezero.com/

Rather geeky, I know.

Re: Simon Goudie » Maintenance Mode

The trams are a mixed blessing. They beat the hell out of catching a bus - they're easier to catch, stops are more obvious, and usually avoid the hassles of traffic. For getting around the city in particular, they are definately my preference.
However, they can be slow and a bit jerky and pale in comparison to a train. Catching one for miles can also be a bit of a drag.

Melbourne's public transport is a three tiered system: You catch a train to get somewhere, get a tram anywhere in between rail lines and catch a bus to places not covered by a tram. The system does need an overhaul, as it is not as effective as it should be and has been particularly bad recently. Melbourne's population is simply too sprawled out for operators to make a profit and that makes it hard for them to invest in the system in return. Thankfully, it's fairly easy to understand and the ticketing is relatively straight forward.

As for avoiding the city while the Games are on, I wouldn't be so hesitant. Most of the events are outside the main city area and there's no real need for people to cut through the city. If you aren't on a tram/train line that goes to one of the events, then you shouldn't be too bad. Just avoid the peak hour crushes and possibly Flinders St station if you can. If you're heading to Murmur, Stork, Loop or similar in the city, you should be fine, there just might be some extra tourists around town (plenty of Canadians probably!). Just work out how long your trip will take and flick on the iPod.

Interestingly, today was the first day of the Games and I had the best train/tram ride to work (peak hour) I've had in weeks. Go figure.

Re: Simon Goudie » Maintenance Mode

True, but these bimbos can hand out leaflets like nobodies business. If the Herald Sun could one up them by posting the torrent link, they probably would have. I think it's pretty cool actually, but I feel its uses are quite limited due to data cost and battery life, unfortunately.

There's no way I could leave this running when roaming, as I would have to pay a fortune to my provider. That's not a problem when I get home and back to my WLAN, but that drains battery like anything so isn't much of an option either.

Therefore, I'd still lean towards a s60 program that would let me moblog to a hosted website, rather than host one on the phone itself.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on the Nokia Web Server site though, it seems there's a few great things coming out of the Beta Labs at the moment.

Re: Simon Goudie » Maintenance Mode

Hi Molly,
Thanks! I enjoyed reading your GTD posts, particularly how well you find Nozbe fits your workflow. Nozbe is probably the next system I'll have a close look at, mainly because of it's accessibility, like Remember The Milk. I'm having a look at GTDAgenda at the moment, but I really need ubiquitous access to my system. Leveraging Evernote is another thing on my list to try, as it looks pretty amazing.

I just wish Jott was available in Australia! As one of your commenters pointed out, this would really help with systems like Nozbe, Twitter and RTM. The lack of scroll wheel means that you will have to click past songs individually and no screen means you have to keep listening to the start of each track, even in non-shuffle mode. Given that it holds up to 240 tracks, that could be a real pain. Still, I might have to track one down and have a play, but I don't think I will be purchasing. The mini-mac on the other hand...

Cheers, Raduza

Re: Ipod Shuffle

Maybe they should have gone for a new design rather than cashing in on the iPod craze. There's not a lot of resemblance at all between the shuffle and the rest of the family. I think they could have started an iFlash (snigger) line of products. They would then have the liberty of styling it from scratch and not incurring the wrath of 'elitist' iPod owners (raises hand). I think what is going to weigh the shuffle down the most is its link to the iPod family.
