Another point should be learning from other's mistakes. True I understand, we can't foresee them and this advice works well everywhere, but in a dynamic work environment, it always makes sense to keep abreast of what others are doing wrong so we can capitalize on them.

I know one thing for sure, the Indian social networing sites had a high time around last year where all the top VC's were funding it(sequoia funded 7 mill to minglebox.com), but since then the Indian social networking sites aren't doing that great. Mingle box atleast seems to have been past its peak in the product life cycle.
Bharat Student seems to be quite big, though I don't see them doing that great in the future.

The thing is you need to improvise in india.

Social networking sites of indian origin will only work in india if we give them a new incentive which they didnt get on orkut hi5 or facebook.

Indian social netwrokin sites are trying to do this by having campus moderators and paying them to blog or become sort of online evangelists.

I guess the craigslist people are happy with the amount of money they are minting. Though I do hope one of their guys stumbles upon this piece of news, even if they do not have the common sense to charge people in other markets.
