Just because where you are employed there is no bonus plan does not mean they do not exist, they are everywhere. Did you look at the dollars offerred? After taxes it's a few tanks of gas and a pizza. Incenting teachers to stay at their shool is a GOOD thing for the taxpayers, it costs us far more each time someone leaves and a replacement is needed.

Jake and Andrew - bad teachers get fired and are not around long enough for the bonus. Peabody continually loses good teachers to higher paying communities so this is a creative way to incent them to stay. As long as kids are born teachers will be needed and they deserve decent pay just like anyone else. End of story.

Andrew, since we are in an economic downturn do you suggest laying off hundreds of teachers and closing the schools down? We pay taxes no matter what the economy is doing and it pays for services, one happens to be teaching children, deal with it. If you think they have it so good, quit your job and get on their payroll for about 34k starting salary, if you have a masters degree it is about 39k. Best of luck.

I was on the 5:37 from Boston and when we stopped just before River Works the conductor immediately told us what had happenned. They clearly updated us that as soon as they could get to Lynn they would let us all off and get into waiting buses to bring us to our destination. I thought they did a great job communicating, it's not always their strong suit. Our inconvenience is minor compared to a man dying.

Are you serious? A major tradegy on the tracks that grinds all service to a halt for 3+ hours and your hour and 15 minute delay grades them an F-? Think about the logistics involved in getting thousands of people (North AND Southbound) to their destinations in the heart of rush hour. Believe it or not your train was not the only one impacted. I suppose you think there is a reserve of a couple hundred buses sitting somewhere waiting to be used in case of an emergency? You need to change your name to Selfish / Unrealistic Commuter.

The mayor has clearly laid out several ways in which the city can take on the debt service of a new HS without added taxation. The State has agreed to pay over 55% and if the city doesn't act now that will probably go away. If reconsidered in 5 years as you suggest, the cost will rise to $100 million and with no state assistance is not feasible. Take advantage of the state reimbursement and get it done now.
Spending $10 million to renovate (no reimbursement) then another $100 in 5 years is a foolish choice compared to approx. $35 million for a brand new facility today.

What year was the $65 million estimate? Naturally over time costs go up which is all the more reason to do it now. For every .45 we spend the state will kick in .55, how can you say no to that?

Sugarcoat it anyway you want JD but the bottom line is Peabody seems to be a mess these days. Union contracts regularly get extended without agreements (anyone hear how the teacher's contract is still being worked on despite the announcement an agreement was reached)? You have a cop who committed a crime peeking at files, another one who recently shot and killed a man and another who unbelievably beat his own mother. You have a firefighter sleeping at the switchboard, a former coach suing everyone, kids sports leagues grabbing headlines due to adults acting like children, and city council meetings reduced to yelling, finger pointing and fighting, is that it?
Nope, wait, a downtown that floods when it rains!!!!

I am not a teacher, just thought it was ironic that you were criticizing HS students for not being able to write a sentence when neither can you. I'd have to go back and look at the test results but I find it hard to believe that only 2% of the entire graduating class knows how to write a sentence.

Come on I don’t believe it.
In the city’s defense they do have a lot on their plate….let’s see….a former coach suing for discrimination, a former sleeping firefighter suing for unlawful termination, a former cop who was found guilty of a computer crime while on the job, a former cop who beat his own mother into a coma, a current cop who recently shot and killed a man, little league administrators and coaches acting like children, recent key staff resignations, empty buildings downtown being ransacked, liquor license disputes, adult fighting and finger pointing at city meetings, union contract renewals regularly delayed, a High School that was just put on a watch list, and flooding downtown when it rains hard.
Reality TV anyone?

That's a laughable comparison. Cops make tens of thousands annually on details, far more than coaches make and there are far more cops on detail than coaches in Peabody. The irony is coaching is much more difficult than a paid detail but who gets paid better?

Why does the City of Peabody have different health insurance levels for different unions? Doesn't it make sense to offer all municipal employees the same plan selections/options/co-pays regardless of what union they are in? My guess is they could get better rates if they did.

Whether you are pro education or not the city screwed this one up. They bargained with the union in good faith, the union ratified the contract now the city says they need to change it?

Usually where there is smoke there is fire and if rounds of a 22 are found at school you have to assume a gun could be there too. Nobody was in danger based on hindsight alone Doc.

So for $35 million you'd chose a renovated school over a brand new one? I don't get it.
The state will not just give the city the other $56 million to do what they want, it would ONLY be towards a new school.
Any renovation would be funded solely by the city.

Unfortunately, that's what happens when you are dealing with a government agency. The clerk is in a guaranteed lifetime position and if she doesn't feel like being nice nobody is going to make her. Knowing the RMV has the ultimate authority of whether you drive or not probably makes her feel like she can be a bully and if you don't like it you can talk to the pistol packing cop on duty who will back her up 99 times out of 100.
Ever hear the lady on the Orange line in Boston tell people if they don't get out of the way of the closing doors the train will hit them? I'm guessing they are related.

I don't think this Obvio company has produced a single car, and this is two years after they were marketing themselves as the next thing. I wouldn't hold my breath that this company will every produce more than the prototypes that they have been showing around. I would be very interested in an electric version of this car, but I think this company is all smoke and no pancake.
