in Letter: Bad experience at Beverly RMV on The Salem News
Unfortunately, that's what happens when you are dealing with a government agency. The clerk is in a guaranteed lifetime position and if she doesn't feel like being nice nobody is going to make her. Knowing the RMV has the ultimate authority of whether you drive or not probably makes her feel like she can be a bully and if you don't like it you can talk to the pistol packing cop on duty who will back her up 99 times out of 100.
Ever hear the lady on the Orange line in Boston tell people if they don't get out of the way of the closing doors the train will hit them? I'm guessing they are related.

Not in my back yard huh Betsy?
Betsy Ross I guess you havn't tried to exit the train station lately between 4:30 and 6:30 pm. Beverly already has an investor lined up and they have an RFP for the land to build on. Salem would need to provide an access road to lead to the top of the overpass to handle that amount of cars from the current entrance and exit. It would never work! Build 1st plan later cost double!
You can always drive to Beverly.

in Disqualifications increase Beverly High cost by $1.1M on The Salem News
No inside line, the process has been explained in the paper time and time again. Hard to express an opinion if you don't pay attention to the process.
I'm real, most of your comments aren't.

in Disqualifications increase Beverly High cost by $1.1M on The Salem News
So for $35 million you'd chose a renovated school over a brand new one? I don't get it.
The state will not just give the city the other $56 million to do what they want, it would ONLY be towards a new school.
Any renovation would be funded solely by the city.
James I know where the state gets its money......and it doesn't grow on a tree. Its called taxes from people like you and me...so bottom line the money isn't free. If the city and schools did repairs, upgrades, maintenance on its property like the average taxpayer...we would not be building a new wing on a school after 40 years at a cost of $80 Million...sorry inflation, over runs, kickbacks,,,,make that $100Million. Lets call it the Little dig.

They will need to vote again since the original cost went up. Why don't you want it?

Hopefully this will get it moving forward.
Replacing a delapitated building with a brand new h.s costing residents $35 million is great for the city.

You have a PhD in what? I know it's America and all but you seriously think kids having leftover ammo in their pockets is normal? Did he have the proper license for this caliber? Usually where there is smoke there is fire and if rounds of a 22 are found at school you have to assume a gun could be there too. Nobody was in danger based on hindsight alone Doc.

in Teachers protest holdup of pact signing on The Salem News
Whether you are pro education or not the city screwed this one up. They bargained with the union in good faith, the union ratified the contract now the city says they need to change it?
No wonder Peabody is a mess, the leadership is pathetic.
SnapperCronin Well said, $$. I would add that it is simply due to the lack of leadership and lack of accountability. Mikey is hiding behind his crumbling facade. Like the previous analogy of rats bailing out of a sinking ship this once mighty, reputable and proud city is quickly becoming a dump.

in Teachers protest holdup of pact signing on The Salem News
Why does the City of Peabody have different health insurance levels for different unions? Doesn't it make sense to offer all municipal employees the same plan selections/options/co-pays regardless of what union they are in? My guess is they could get better rates if they did.
double dee That would make too much sense and Mayor Mike would not be able to play favorites.

That's a laughable comparison. Cops make tens of thousands annually on details, far more than coaches make and there are far more cops on detail than coaches in Peabody. The irony is coaching is much more difficult than a paid detail but who gets paid better?

in Teachers protest holdup of pact signing on The Salem News
A problem in Peabody?
Come on I don’t believe it.
In the city’s defense they do have a lot on their plate….let’s see….a former coach suing for discrimination, a former sleeping firefighter suing for unlawful termination, a former cop who was found guilty of a computer crime while on the job, a former cop who beat his own mother into a coma, a current cop who recently shot and killed a man, little league administrators and coaches acting like children, recent key staff resignations, empty buildings downtown being ransacked, liquor license disputes, adult fighting and finger pointing at city meetings, union contract renewals regularly delayed, a High School that was just put on a watch list, and flooding downtown when it rains hard.
Reality TV anyone?

in Fix of MCAS goof lifts Peabody High's results on The Salem News
I am not a teacher, just thought it was ironic that you were criticizing HS students for not being able to write a sentence when neither can you. I'd have to go back and look at the test results but I find it hard to believe that only 2% of the entire graduating class knows how to write a sentence.

John, maybe you and that teacher need to spend more time together. All 3 of your sentences are pathetic.

JohnnyAppleseed It's on a blog where language doesn't follow the rules of English Literature. You hide behind your computer and criticize me for context and not content.

Maybe the teacher was wrong, and there are only perfect students being graduated. The Community College Presidents are wrong saying that the local high schools are not preparing students with basic abilities to attend Community College.

When "needs improvement" is an MCAS grade, then the test fails. Needs improvement should not allow GRADUATION, but indicates more teaching is needed.

I bet the Bishop Fenwick and St. John's Prep grads know how to write a sentence, a paper, a letter, and are ready to attend Community College without remedial training of what was missed by the PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

Are you a teacher in Peabody? Do you deserve your salary based on your results with STUDENTS? I think I may have hit a nerve.

The board should have told them to paint over the ridiculous drink menu they have on THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING.
They could paint “come inside and get totally wasted for cheap” because it says the same thing.

in Peabody mayor's chief of staff quits on The Salem News
Sugarcoat it anyway you want JD but the bottom line is Peabody seems to be a mess these days. Union contracts regularly get extended without agreements (anyone hear how the teacher's contract is still being worked on despite the announcement an agreement was reached)? You have a cop who committed a crime peeking at files, another one who recently shot and killed a man and another who unbelievably beat his own mother. You have a firefighter sleeping at the switchboard, a former coach suing everyone, kids sports leagues grabbing headlines due to adults acting like children, and city council meetings reduced to yelling, finger pointing and fighting, is that it?
Nope, wait, a downtown that floods when it rains!!!!
hawcwatcher Don't forget the fire chief who doesn't pass the CORI, but is allowed in every public building and school in the city.
feedback JD is right on! you might as well write for one of the rags you see at the check out counter because this paper does not write about the facts they dont investigate the stories they write rumors the the editors should be ashamed of themselves but that's why your not writing for a real newspaper.
