We tend to view reader registration as a necessary evil. This Web site is free, so reader registration is a concession to the reality of the business needs. Every paper approaches this problem differently, and we are almost constantly reevaluating our registration process. Thanks for your comments.

Wow - jargon alert. Sorry, I wrote that post kind of late. CMS is a 'content management system.' It is the software that controls the design and presentation of news articles on our Web site.

Well - I stand corrected.

Fortunately, as I stated in the above entry - attempts at abuse of our polls are few and far between.

But, at least we can pull the poll back out from 'behind' registration so it is visible without being logged in to the site.

My other comments stand. The polls (and the hundreds of others across the Web) are what they are. Non scientific surveys of public opinion.

In most cases our readers have shown themselves to be worthy of trust. Where we find egregious violations of the trust we will remove the polls and make a note of the reasons.

Thank you for the suggestion. It is one that has been requested by staff at the Telegraph as well - as they do not want to vote in the polls (and sway the results) in order to see the results.

I will pass the idea along - but I believe as with the overall security issue - it is something that we can not do in-house, and needs to be addressed by our vendor.

Nonetheless - a good idea.

Accuracy is definitely an issue. One of the advantages to using them on a local basis is hopefully we know the area well enough to realize that Baboosic Lake Road does not run through the middle of the lake.

Can't promise we will be perfect about it - but a human touch can definitely help the technology along a bit.
