Eating local is a fabulous concept that people are not always excited to embrace. To live in an area where fruits and vegetables are plentiful all year round makes it easier. If a person lives in a climate that only permits seasonal growth of local produce, then a shift in mindset to decide not to buy imported produce. OPtions exist- you could set up a greenhouse and look into other options. The key is to be willing to be flexible and open-minded.

Thank you for sharing this story. It reminds me of the wisdom found in your books where you reveal that less can actually say more.

This post reminds me of a similar story about a senior monk. His peers were after him to discharge an obnoxious pupil who was always swearing and didn't strike them as "monk material."

"Send him on his way," they urged. But the senior monk refused.

"I will not do that," he replied. "This pupil is God's greatest gift to me."

This stunned his peers.

The senior monk said, "since this pupil has enterd my life, I have become more humble than ever before."

His peers simply looked at him, confused.

"You see, before I met this pupil, I thought I knew everything about patience, understanding, love, compassion and unconditional forgiveness. This pupil reminds me every day how much I still have to learn."

I will send it to a friend who recently cancelled his upcoming wedding This happened abruptly after the minister helped reveal the bride-to-be wasn't divorced. Its a rather difficult time for this friend yet, as this plot thickens, its useful to value blessings in disguise.

Each Coelho book I read I find more engaging and thought-provoking than the last. Each one is unique and uncomparable yet, each one probes me to question on levels that encourage me to expand and redefine my ever-changing comfort zones.

Some people conclude that nothing outside themselves will fulfill them. Sex as a topic invites us to come face-to-face with what we've heard and experienced, with our principles, values, dares, hopes and dreams. I look forward to "Brida" with enthusiasm.

This post reminded me of something I read by Bernie Siegel, M.D. in a book called Handbook of the Soul. In it, Siegel asks how you would introduce yourself to God. In my mind, he already knows us better than we know ourselves. Still, he wants us to evolve to know who we are at the core. This is our true life's work-exploring the depths of the soul. Your books reflect facits of your own journey. I'm grateful to share in that as it inspires my journey into the depths of my soul.

I love emphasis on the idea that what is "necessary" isn't the same as what we think we want.

Society sends us messages in images and in lifestyles. We perceive communities around us that reinforce misplaced desires. Each moment is an opportunity to discover the power of self-discipline, of innate self-worth and of developing abilities to transcend the things we have been conditioned to accept and aspire to.

In essence, our senses lie. They don't perceive reality without being trained to see past the self-created illusions. Whatever you have been told or conditioned to think, you can learn to think for yourself in ways that disregard what's in your head. You can come to believe you are loved, accepted and appreciated unconditionally for all you are. You can come to understand your life, its supposed tests, trials and tribulations all stretch you and make you stronger. You need nothing. You have no lack, no imperfection, no reason to doubt yourself. Every experience brings you closer to grasping this truth.

If you interpret or perceive harmony to be deranged, then you are comparing and judging yourself with regard to a reference. We create our own idea of the universe in the mind, based on how we feel about ourselves.

To me, a 'modern' approach to spirituality doesn't require meeting other people's expectations any more or less than views of spirituality in the past. A sense of time is a construct, invention, or illusion. We live in a universe that seems real based on our understanding of our own thoughts and feelings at a given time. Who we were when we initially read The Alchemist may differ from who we see ourselves to be now. If we re-read this book, we would reframe harmony based on our own sense of personal growth since the last time we read it. If self-view changes, then an understanding of spirituality may also change.

The subject of this Mehegan book reminds us that human ego is irrational and prompts people to behave contrary to their inner impulses. The line of thinking that enables humans to uncover truth, to learn to feel the inside of the self, is acually simple, different, and requires no inner struggle.

When a person doesn't choose to respect the past, he or she inevitably makes similar mistakes in future. Whatever you're doing now or are about to do, a few months ago, you may have never imagined. And yet, you can love what you do, who and where you are. You can evolve to trust your instincts and discern they have their own virtues. To realize whatever is going on around you doesn't have to brainwash or condition you to give up who you are, is a key step to opening your senses wider. We can each move away from irrational thinking and behaviour. its part of a process that indicates our growing self-awareness.

Caring for the body is like caring for the spirit. Most of what human beings don't choose to understand in life relates to what they don't readily see. Some people believe the invisible truth might seem the hardest to discern. You realize you're expanding your awareness as you realize 'seeing' in human terms has nothing to do with it. Its all about learning to look in ways and directions you hadn't considered before. The truth must be felt. It defies explanation because that isn't what its about. Each person is meant to figure it out for himself or herself. What you're told about love, faith and other concepts doesn't ever ring true. Only experience does.

Wisdom grows when one realizes how to listen to the self at the core and doesn't disregard intuition. To choose to assume what has already been done is not the only way is also to ascertain what external forces believe or judge about you doesn't matter. Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" is a poem I memorized in grade 6. I remember it to this very day.

It is the fear of accepting yourself that destroys you, the fear of dissolving ego and recognizeing bliss is all you are. Fear of success, of having nothing left to work toward, scares the living daylight out of many people.

This story reveals its wise not to simply believe everything you read. Just because someone tells you something, doesn't mean you should automatically take it as gospel either. Living in a physical body offers each of us many different opportunities to grow. One of my favorite responses to what I'm told relates to a story about a Zen master who didn't permit external events to disrupt his inner peace of mind. No matter what he was told, he always replied, "Is that so?"

Some human beings are compelled to judge, no matter what they read, or about whom. This has less to do with the focus of the writing than unresolved issues inside the critic. If you love someone's work, you are, in some sense, expressing a facit of unconditional love. Not everyone has yet learned to "go the distance," that is to accept other human beings despite choices that may not resonate in your own mind. The thing is, you aren't that other person so you aren't expected to make the same choices.

Some people believe we have more than one "soulmate," and that we could be happy within ourselves whether we chose to partner with one or a number of other people. This idea resonates with me. At the same time, I also believe that souls reunite with other souls they have known in past lives. How we find one another is magic.

Personally, I've found that taking great risks can bring great personal rewards. I also sense magic plays a role in our choices, whether or not human beings are ready to admit or accept this.

Many human beings will sense what is right, appropriate or in the interest of their learning and growth. This doesn't mean they take the initiative to do these things. This helps people begin to understand the difference between theory and practice, thinkers and doers. It can be a very long way between the conception of a thought and the effort exerted to make it happen. The mind can be a very powerful obstacle. It creates debilitating illusions which ironically prevent meaningful action when the illusions don't exist.

Suffering permits indivduals to learn to stop identifying with external things. It urges you to explore deeper sides of yourself. If you believe that suffering is triggered when you identify with form, then you also begin to understand that suffering begins to dissolve when you acknowledge it and choose to work through it. Eckhart Tolle tells that, "suffering has a noble purpose: the evolution of consciousness and the buring up of ego." To read this and to experience it teach you different levels of awareness.

This post resonates with me. My parents experienced what it was like to have the empty nest when my two sisters and I moved away. One sister lived in the same country as my parents but remains 5 horus away by car. Another sister is in the United States. I was in Australia. More recently, my husband and I moved back to Canada to be with with my parents temporarily because of a health situation. My mother in particular requires in-home care and my father needed assistance. We are adjusting other aspects of our lives because we feel this is the right thing to do. Living in the same house like this is not as common in Western countries. I have friends in Asia who have three or more generations living in the same dwelling. You learn to adjust to your circumstances and do what makes sense to you, regardless of what society suggests are your options.

People who donate money to these kinds of situations seldom know where the money actually goes. "People in charge" will say one thing, but that does not mean aid always gets where its needed. Friends and colleagues of mine work for organisations that have people in foreign countries where aid is requested. They report all kinds of unforeseen obstacles to receiveing aid that is supposed to be in transit.

There was a period in my life where I used to wish to live as long as I could so long as I had certain functioning faculties and physical abilities. As I have evolved inside however, my beliefs have evolved as well. I now attune to energy in ways that enable me to discern spiritual immortality. This article could be viewed as a kind of pandora's box. Human beings are reminded a person can learn from someone without aspiring to become him.

If you believe love and compassion are the answer, then you may realize anger and hatred are very profound teachers. Fighting anger with anger is no solution. Teaching hatred is not the solution either. Anti-war rallies send a different message than peace rallies. Look to Gandhi:)

Regardless of your life experience, negative emotions that bubble within you show you who you really are, why you fear, what matters to you, how you cope with adversity, ego and frustration. Some people believe everyone you encounter provokes reflections about your deepest self. Not everyone desires to accept this. To choose to learn from your own anger and to learn to understand it is key in the process of self- mastery.

A human being can identify with problems, imperfections, illness and hatred on different levels. Ego defines a focus grounded in emotion. Ego is not wrong, only unconscious. People have free will and can cling to a sense of illness, conflict, despair, idealism or something else. This is done in part because these perceptions have become internalized on levels that contribute to a sense of identity. As a person explores what creates their own sense of reality, then they will fuel the fire with parallel thoughts, feelings and perceptions until/ unless they shift to let go and focus elsewhere.

Every angle of the media has a vested interest in what it broadcasts. The perception of each viewer is based on cultural, emotional, religious or other baggage unless a person has evolved to move beyod these mental obstacles created within limited physical space.

An intriguing juxtaposition is offered by the film, Slumdog Millionnaire. Media have portrayed that the government has offered "better" housing/ living conditions to poor people from that area. Apparently, some people do not desire to change their way of life. Similarly, some people do not choose to shift how and what they take in with their senses. It is always possible to evolve to rise above thought and rediscover something else.

The Dalai Lama askes us to remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
Many people fear silence, fear being judged, fear not doing or, not being right.
Lao Tzu encourages human beings to empty the mind of everything. How many minds rest at peace? Preoccupations rise and fall while the Self observes. Ideas grow and expand and then return to the source. Returning to the source is stillness, which is the way of nature. This is the origin of everything. People resist the nature of self-acceptance.

In silence, people can know themselves. In silence, they observe differently. A reacting mind is noisy, judgmental and disrtacted. In silence, people sense the right action. A noisy mind leads to distorted action. In silence, people suddenly understand and relate to others. Focus moves from the physical world to pure love. In silence, one hears all.

A Taoist views crisis as opportunity to explore and improve life experience. A Taoist often acts very simply or not at all. To overreact removes the power of the situation to help those involved to actually learn and make it past the transitional stages of the crisis.

Consider also Zen thinking. This uses paradox to teach. The riddle is often illogical or contradictory. Zen koans (riddles) work by creating a crisis of logic which literally breaks the mind out of one pattern and reorients it into a new direction.

Ever heard the phrase, "sleep when you're dead?" This cultural phenomenon grew out of the idea sleep shouldn't be necessary. Workaholics may have coined the phrase? Yet, on a physical plane, rest and regeneration are necessary. Its interesting to read about different sleep habits and the impact on different levels of productivity. It has been noted for instance, that shorter sleeps (i.e. shifts of 2-3 hours) a few times per day would lead to getting more out of life. Remind yourself everything is an opinion unless it is experienced by yourself.

I sense different kinds of intelligence exist. Professional or workplace labels offer a rather limited view of perceived "intelligence." Whenever we use adjectives such as "great," we are falling into the trap of believing in the illusion of inferiority-superiority complex. Another stance would be that no person is better, more intelligent or different than you at soul level. You may simply find that certain points of view empower you to open your heart and mind differently.

It's useful to note that alternative energy sources are becoming more of a focus in the economic marketplace. Higher demand for materials like silicon will draw new attenion to environmental issues associated with mining. Every situation has blessings or let's say, "a bright side." What is your view on that?
The current U.S. financial situation could be perceived as a blessing in disguise. After all, if a normal citizen went around repeatedly paying credit card debts with more credit cards, that person would not be permitted to continue for too long. Credit would run out and banks would come after them. Not so with a givernmetn, apparently. Repercussions are huge and affect millions of people. Accountability is what is missing from this whole picture. Rather than assign blame and criticize who is or is not doing an effective job, it makes more sense to address the core issues that pertain to twisted values, self-interest, protectionism, military policy and a whole lot of dishonest government officials that the public has been accepting and turing a blind eye to for far too long.
