in Cranky McCain is back and mad at Obama on AMERICAblog
If my money is going to be dispersed I'd rather it be on public works than tax cuts that are more advantageous to the wealthy and big business. Republican lawmakers are trying to cover their own asses. They are just posturing for the next set of elections. They figure if they can block anything from happening and the situation worsens then they will be re-elected by default. It's tax cuts or nothing from their point of view. At this point I feel like they have made their stance and are unwilling to concede anything or to even look at the other side's opinions as ideas that might work.

Treat 'em like mushrooms.

in Obama to announce executive pay limits on AMERICAblog
In my opinion its not the salary that is the issue. It's the bonuses. I can understand how they have million dollar salaries when I look at the size of the companies these people are supposed to run. The major problem area is when the CEOs get 10,30, 50,100 MILLION in bonuses and the companies are losing money. Personally I think CEO's bonuses should be some percentage of company profits. With stock options, CEO's will always be able to 'get over' regardless of how the company is doing in reality.

in Obama recommits to repeal "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy on AMERICAblog
They need to end that shit as soon as possible. I don't know the exact number, but a huge percentage of our Arabic translators were gay. We could really use them. In order to end harrassment I'd just enact strong regulations against harrassment.

in Iraqis hail shoe-throwing journalist on The Daily Contributor
Some of the comments on here are ridiculous.

Adam - Voicing your opinion does nothing to influence Bush, Jr. He will just continue his way regardless. Don't you remember 'Mission Accomplished"? Reality is not Bush's strong suit. If it doesn't fit his way of thinking, he will ignore the facts.

George - He's a reporter. You say he's directionless in life? And should become a bomber? Your post shows both your ignorance on the subject and your inability to understand people and their motives. Put the blame where it lays. Osama for 9/11, Bush for Iraq. One had nothing to do with the other. The only piece of evidence linking the two was coerced, and more importantly fabricated and false testimony under duress and torture. There was no link. Bush, Jr. was hust looking for an excuse to invade Iraq and topple Saddam. Listen to his speeches in the years before the war.

Retired LE - Bush has shown no respect to the average Iraqi citizen. He even used their plight to improve his image. "Mission Accomplished." Why should they respect him? Should people have respected Hitler while he was fuhrer? Hell no. Actions such as invading Iraq and propping up governments leads to our insecurity.

Rbas - How exactly would the journalist have reported Saddam's atrocities without being tortured and executed? And when the fighting between groups was going on at one point he was kidnapped. I'd say he has first-hand knowledge of what is going on on the ground. He has as much a right to be upset as anyone.

Steven allah - I don't exactly disagree with you in terms of leaving Saddam in place. He and his sons may have been horrible, but he was the only secular leader of a Muslim country. The only time he used religion was pretty much to gain support against America when we invaded. It was absolutely necessary to go to Iraq when they invaded Kuwait, but the second time was not necessary. He was able to keep a stable Middle East because of his military and the geographic location of Iraq. Deposing him could only lead to instability in the region. How Bush and those around him didn't see this is beyond me. The second part I disagree with whole-heartedly. It doesn't even deserve a retort.

It amazes me how we as Americans refuse to look at ourselves and admit failures and responsibility. We aren't responsible for every problem in the Middle East, but one cannot say we aren't a large contributor. Start accepting responsibility and stop pointing the finger. We are Americans and we should be better than that.

Retired LE Matt,

Comparing Bush to Hitler is totally out of line.... Bush made his decision to invade Iraq based on intel he was provided by his advisors and our allies. Everyone seems to forget how Saddam played the game, or what he did to his own people.

The only sad thing here is that we have essentially traded blood for oil. Without that oil the ragheads would still be nomads - living in tents and scratching fleas.

in Iraqi Journalist Muthathar al Zaidi Throws his Shoes at President Bush During Press Conference on Black Political Thought
I could care less if Bush was hurt. If we were all lucky that pretzel would have done its job a couple years back. I am only happy that Bush did not get hurt because the journalist would have been black-bagged. As it is, the journalist is pretty much a hero to people all over, not just in the Middle East. That was the ultimate F U. It shows the frustration people feel, without physically injuring anyone. Even if the shoes connnected it would have just been a black eye. Which is exactly what he has given us, the American people.

Our country is just!
In the first Guantanamo Bay case to be reviewed, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled in favor of Huzaifa Parhat, a Chinese Muslim known as a Uighur, undermining the basis for his more than six years in detention.
Parhat never fought against the United States and the government concedes there's no evidence he ever intended to. He has been held for six years because he is linked to a Chinese separatist group that the military says has some ties to the Al Qaeda terrorist network. And it comes to light, he never was an instigator against the U.S.
I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of these.

Hey Kevin, Way to take my comments out of context. I am over the election, but the FACT is that it was stolen. This was just a point. And I said our actions and policies contributed to 9/11. I did not say we deserved it. So do you think they just did it for no reason? People who are upset about both the war and Darfur are upset because of human rights violations. They occur in Darfur, they occurred under Saddam, and they continued to occcur under U.S. occupation. How hard is that to understand, and how does that bother you? And yes, the first line was "former terrorist suspects, " they key word being suspects, meaning they were suspected, meaning it is not sure or positive. If so wouldn't it just say former terrorists? And you say one shouldn't be able to hold someone accountable because one is biased against them. Everyone should be held accountable for everything they do, especially a public figure in the public arena. One should praise another for good work, but what is wrong with criticizing someone when they do wrong? People are biased because they feel someone, in this case Bush, has done a horrible job. 75% of Americans or more feel Bush has done/is doing a bad job. Many people had no bias against Bush when he entered office. Shoot, he won the election, but it is obvious that he has done a bad job, or at least that there is the perception he has done a bad job by 3 out of 4 Americans. And although Saddam may have had ties to terrorists, he had no ties with the terrorists that we are currently hunting. Saddam and these terrorists were diametrically opposed to each other, with completely different idealogies. Saddam only moved idealogically towards a more religious tone when confronted by the Iranians and the U.S.

Maltese - Did you even have a point in your rant? What reason is our national symbol the eagle by the bay, in consideration of your argument? I'm not against the conservative government, just against bad government. And Bush didn't win that election, it was stolen. I am against some of the liberal government's strategies as well. Such as Clinton's bombing of the Sudanese pharmaceutical plant. You talk about the need to protect the country, but this is more about the torture of people whom have never been charged with anything, many of whom were taken from their homes without reason. You say the media is a source of information when compared to intelligence. Well, good job with Iraq. You speak of 9/11 like these people have no reason to hate us. It is our policies in the past that led to the situation. I realize that we cannot go back and erase what has previously been done, but our country continues to have policies that will upset people. THIS is the bigger picture. How about we try to avoid killing people and start helping them. It might bring some goodwill and maybe a little bit peace and a sense of security for everyone.

Sorry, I think I meant Hugh's comment. ; ( I was wondering how someone using the name fast moving cloud had those type of opinions.) My bad.

Fast moving cloud, you have no clue what you are talking about. By your rationale it is ok to torture and detain people because they MIGHT know something. How is torturing them for information at GITMO going to get us that bomb. It is a half world away and this torture is/was taking place months/years after they were kidnapped. Look at Ghosts of Abu Graib on HBO. You might learn something. American soldiers have detained/kidnapped and imprisoned children in an effort to curb terrorism! It is these exact actions, along with severe unemployment in many middle eastern countries that lead to terrorism. In fact much of it is actually revolutionary fighting. If another country's army dropped into America because of a few American terrorists and they came door to door, you can be sure that we Americans would be fighting back at every opportunity, so how can you blame them for doing the same? Think for yourself and stop watching the FOX news.
