i think listening encompasses quite a lot, more than it should probably and that's part of the problem, i think we need more defined stages. some people companies can afford to make mistakes, the problem is that some executives don't understand that so strategists are under a lot of pressure.

i don't think there is any doubt that companies are going to have to begin creating and implementing a social media policy, twitter and the SEC are a great recent example of this. as jeff mentioned before, i think intel did a great job with theirs.

it is a bit flawed but unfortunately it's a metric that people are looking at as a measure of success. you did recommend a few good tools though. i'm not familiar with all of them; am going to check them out now, thanks!

hey lj, you do make a good point. a lot of people look at the number of twitter followers you have as an authority/influence rank, however if you are buying your twitter followers you lose credibility.

hey gary, not meant to really "call it out" but just show as an example. didn't do anything wrong and you're right it's not the worst thing ever, far from it. just goes to show that there are multiple creative ways out there to build relationships with people. what kw's did you target by the way?

LJ Jones I wasn't really meaning to "call you out" either. One thing I think that is great about social media, is that if you are trustworthy and people follow and like you, they will vouch for you, as many of your supporters have done here and else where. And you have obviously built trust through hard work and personal relationships. This tactic just seems to fall outside that. I would wonder the difference in influence between people who follow you on twitter because of the one to one interaction and people who followed you because they saw the Adwords ad. I would love to hear more details about the project that started this discussion and the results of what you were trying to show your friend.

I just came back from a trip to all around turkey a few months ago and I'll tell you a 3 week trip there will turn you into a hard negotiator. i've always loved debating, negotiating so this stuff is fun for me. im actually going to china for a month in a few weeks and looking forward to doing some great negotiating there as well.

don't suppose you're going to be in china during march are you tim? by the way i still have that funny pic of you and rohit bhargava at the web 2.0 expo, the one where you were holding his book...ya i'm the guy who took the photo...remember?

hi lina, credit for what? i found out about the spoofing through someone else, and just noticed that you guys had a list of some of the spoof names. did you guys have something to do with detection, notification/etc? You had a whole team working on what? I'd be happy to give you credit, provided I knew what I was giving credit for. All I know is that you had a list of some of the spoof accounts, clue me in and tell me what you guys do and what you did for jeremiah.

well i use google docs for collaboration work. i can share a live doc that can be edited by multiple people at the same time. it's a great tool for collaboration.

ive heard some pretty ridiculous internal jargon before that makes me pause and say "your customers really search for that?" there shouldn't be an excuse now for companies to not be able to target their visitors. integrating seo and social media is a powerful mix that solves this issue :)
