A "why" question is usually a hard one. I personally wanted to learn Japanese because I was interested in Asian cultures. I noticed that Asian kids were smarter in school, so by learning about their culture, I thought I'd get smarter too. Just kidding! I hope I didn't offend anyone. No, but seriously, I thought the writing was cool and artistic. More or less, through cultural diffusion, I was introduced to anime, and Japanese imported electronics before I even knew they were Japanese. So when I looked into learning a new language, I thought of Japanese, since I was interested in its culture, both the "futuristic" one that is known, and the traditional culture. Plus, I looked into other languages and they're much more difficult to pronounce. I like learning new languages and new things about different cultures. Japanese will just be one I pay more attention to and hope to trully study in the future.

Re: Huh? I click on "SUBSCRIBE" and then it takes me to a feeder page. I don't use feeds of any kind. I guess I'm less intelligent about the web then I thought? I already subscribed to the newsletter. How would I log in? Is that option available for everyone or just the web designers? Maybe it's just too late and I'm confused and sleepy.<br>PS: You're welcome.

Re: Are you a J-Doramaholic?

I am a Gokusen addict... Gokusen! Fight-oh. oh! I watched like three episodes today of the second season. I didn't do my homework during the year because I got bored and I thought watching something would wake me up. So I'd go to bed at 3 and wake up at 6 with not much done. Haha. Okay it's not that bad, that happened once, and I only watched one episode. But yeah, someone told me to watch it because I wanted her to watch Heroes (one of the best shows ever!)! So now we're both hooked on Heroes and now I'm hooked on Gokusen. Then I also passed it on to a friend and now he likes it. Ahh. But yeah, Gokusen is like inspiring me to become a teacher... haha. Maybe I'll watch that other one? Not sure about it. I almost watched an entire episode of Hana Yori Dango cause my friend asked me to download it, but I stopped. Gokusen is enough... at least till I finish it! Uhoh... My eyes hurt now... too much computer.

Re: Beginning Japanese I: Where do self-teachers start?

Haha. This is a good entry, considering I have the rest of summer to learn a full school year of Japanese I. I was supposed to take an online course for Japanese I, but it costs too much money. The Japanese teacher (who is actually Japanese, unlike the Spanish teachers at my school!) says she'll see how much Japanese I've learned to determine if I should go to one or two. She said, "Make sure you know all Hiragana, and some Katakana and Kanji at level I." So far I've been memorizing Hiragana since Monday... I made flash cards, since they work for me. Though, all I've memorized were the vowels and ka ke ko ku ki, haha. I'm working on it. I'm glad I got the first step down, or at least I'm starting correctly. Also I found a pdf that has a Japanese 1 curriculum, so I think I'll looseley follow that. The Japanese teacher and my friends got back from a school Japan trip yesterday. (Man, I wanted to go!) So, before I ask her, I was wondering what other suggestions, websites and books are helpful for learning Japanese. I'll email her later on and show her some suggestions and I'll probably put some of her suggestions here. <br><br>PS: I found this website, and it seems pretty good: <a href="http://learnjapanese.elanguageschool.net" rel="nofollow">http://learnjapanese.elanguageschool.net</a>

Re: Beginning Japanese I: Where do self-teachers start?

As lame as this sounds, I just looked up Genki on eBay and I was amazed I could read the cover. haha. YES! But maybe cause it was in order. Correcting pronunciation is hard when you're self-teaching. I guess recording yourself would be the best thing to do. After getting over the fact of what your own voice sounds like, you gotta compare it to a recording of whatever you were trying to say. That's gonna be fun... As for butchering a language, I think I got used to people butchering Spanish, but I shouldn't! I suppose teachers get used to it eventually, but if they want to be Great Teachers, they must not give up on it. This is basically like choir or playing an instrument. Practice makes perfect. You gotta listen to good players, or in this case speakers, and listen to yourself. I should explain the "slow and practice" thing to this guy who basically thinks he's memorized all hiragana in a day, and is aiming for all the katakana in the weekend. He's very... "intelligent". I'll recommend this site.

Re: Beginning Japanese II: Pronunciation is King

You bought one?!

Re: ウルトラローライズデニムビキニパンツ (Ho Pants)

Haha. I desperately need to listen to new songs... Doesn't matter the language. Ayano Tsuji's was alright, how old is it? The Pillows were good. Natsukawa sounds like a pretty good singer. First time I listen to Japanese folk music. I heard Famurueta and Toki no Kawa. The m-flo song was pretty good. Out of all of these... surprisingly Rimi Natsukawa was my favorite. But I think I could listen to m-flo the longest. But that's just from listening to each artist once. Never saw FLCL, I guess I'll check it out since it's only six episodes.

Re: By Request: Favorite Japanese Music (Erin)

FLCL is wierd... the fact that I don't know Japanese is not helpful since its so fast and random. It's not bad, though! I didn't say that! But it's just random! Haha. It's good. Random. FLCL=Random. In the end of the episodes I'm like "HUH!?" Yet I get it, but I kinda don't. I'm on episode 5. I don't like watching 500 episodes of Anime or anything(Maybe HEROES) a day. I don't know how these people can just sit there on Youtube or Veoh and watch Naruto or GTO for like entire seasons in one sitting. I like to absorb what I'm watching and make it last. haha. I like this post. I really liked the end when you talked about learning about the culture is part of learning the language. Also, it was wierd to listen to Godzilla speak English. I wasn't used to that. Haha.<br><br>Humbleness has it's time and place. I think it ties in with the level of respect found in Japanese culture. Ahh... I'm thinking of a bunch of things to write but I can't really write it in an organized form. Basically American culture, including the language, is very direct, I guess. I think external would be a better way to put it. I suppose, though I'm probably wrong, that Japanese culture would be internal. Like when you try to explain something, American culture would probably say, "I need 5 days off." Then you lead to explain those days, "To take care of a sick aunt." Then in Japanese culture you'd say, "My aunt has been very sick recently. I need some days off."<br><br>Uh... I think I'm writing a bunch of random things, so I'll stop before I get confused myself and go way off. It's just I remember this from freshmen year in a Business Support Systems class. The Japanese teacher was also the Business teacher. I think I'm probably way off.<br><br>Still, I understand what you're talking about. Hopefully I'm at least showing it. For fun songs I’d ask for "Hawaiin Roller Coaster Ride" and "Hakuna Matata". But I doubt they know any Hawaiian. Haha. I know all these Disney songs because my friends were in summer band and we got bored and disucssed Disney songs. We noticed that they don’t sing anymore. Well, I studied Japanese durign the summer, learning hiragana and some kanji and a bit of katakana. I also learned some phrases and structure of the sentences and things like that. Basic things. I kind of thought I was going to be screwed and really behind in Japanese 2, since that's what I had signed up for, hoping I'd learned enough. So I did feel like I wasn't getting anywhere for a bit when school came. Today I get to Japanese 2 and was amazed I actually understood the teacher and the students. I acutally knew some things some of the students didn't know. Then again, some of those kids in my Japanese class seem really bad and they don't care. It's likely they were placed in Japanese since they ran out of room in the other classes like Spanish. My teacher said there's going to be basic review the first two weeks and thinks I'll be fine. So I suppose this is a good level up. Still, I can't stop laughing at how the class is. One half is full of the kids that love anime, I saw about three reading manga, and they care about learning. The other half is full of some kids who were making fun of the language and said they didn't care. I was in the middle. Haha. I'm off to do the Japanese homework.<br><br>PS: I like the graphic, but it's kind of said that the "me" character is dead with a broken neck, arm, and legs.

Re: Super Short Style Guidance Post

I saw this book called "fruits" that my friend had and showed all these crazy fashion styles in the late 90's. Once again, keep up the good work!

Re: How to not talk like a Japanese Transvestite (or a boy/girl)

Interesting vid Koichi. Interesting, I'll leave it at that. Haha. This is interesting though, I've never thought about it. Usually when you hear about masculanity or femininity in a language it is categorized on the objects being spoken about, but never the form of the person using it. Well, I guess that's true for European languages and Romance ones. I remember my Thai friend taught me this phrase in a Thai restaurant and the waitress looked at me funny. Haha. My other friend (who was a girl) told me why. Haha. That was a fun day. This is good to know and will keep in mind if I ever learn that much Japanese.

Re: Pivo 2 Unveiled: Generation of Lazy Drivers in the Making

Lol. It did just change a lot overnight. You guys have the most votes overall. Nice! As for the blog design, did you change the top again? I'm getting confused, haha. Cause I wasn't paying too much attention as it changed. I think I like it before, the font style or something. Maybe I'm just making up things. Ha. I like how it transitions from light blue to dark blue. It's been sixth months... I remember when I first caught this website after watching the "Learn Japanese from watching anime 5 minutes a day" video. Haha. Then coincidently my friend passed me Gokusen during the summer and then that post came up of being a "J-dramaholic" and soon came GTO then thanks to Erin FLCL. But I haven't watched anything sense then. Haha. Either way its been cool seeing this blog change over time and I think it's been getting better. Like I said before, I think this site is cool because its informative and amusing. I wish you guys the best of luck with all the future plans! As for suggestions, I'm not really sure, I'll keep it in mind, haha. Still say Tofugu shirt? haha.

Re: Tofugu&#8217;s Japan Week in Review 1: Fukuda, Elevators, &#038; Mochi Death

Viet: Haha. I laughed when I read that! I was like "I didn't know guns were traditional Native American weapons." I mean... you could go with another loophole and be like "the white man brought us these weapons long ago". <br><br>I don't have a problem with whaling, unless it is on species that are dwindling and in danger. I'm also mad that they lied about it by claiming it to be research.<br><br>Whatever happened to dolphins? I used to hear a lot about dolphin controversy. I read somewhere that Heroes' Hayden Pannettiere is wanted in Japan for stoping an annual dolphin hunt. Interesting. haha.<br><br>The video was a lot clearer after reading the article. I think one of the biggest difficulties in making these type of blogs is choosing what is important to talk about and how to write about each thing. There's just so much info and things going on that it would be hard to choose. Good luck!

Re: Use Mixi.jp to improve your Japanese (and make some friends, too!)

Mixi!
