The wages at US companies are already lower then at US-based, foreign owned factories in the south. The $71 dollar/hr rate includes pension payments. It's the total compensation cost for the company divided by the total hours worked, but it includes pension payments for people who worked at those companies for years and years. In other words, the $71 figure is a lie.

Toyota and BMW in the south have new plants, so they don't have that legacy of older workers from decades past.

But the actual compensation paid for working employees is actually lower.

It's really disgusting to see a millionaire venture capitalist whining about some poor blue collar worker "making to much" in this economy. Really it's sick and you should be ashamed of yourself!

The UAW has already made concessions with the auto makers. It's not the Auto makers trying that is trying to lower wages and pension payments, they aren't asking for anything as far as I can tell. The only people who are saying the Unions should accept less compensation is the republicans in the senate as a condition of getting a bailout.

And it has nothing to do with the viability of the Automakers. There are a huge bunch of intrested parties that need to be negotiated with to lower the Auto maker's cost structure, bond holders, suppliers, dealers and workers.

But the focus is on the UAW because the republican party sees this as their chance to destroy the union that helped get Obama into office. They are only asking for concessions from the UAW, and none of the other interested parties.

The senate republicans not the auto makers are willing to play Russian roulette with the economy because they hate unions.

But the point is, the only one asking for these additional union concessions is the senate republicans, not the Auto makers, not Bush or Obama or democrats, or anyone else.

They'll still get their pensions, it's just that it will come from the tax payers. Read up on the Pension Protection Act. letting these companies fail would cost the government far more in terms of pension payments and reduced tax revenue then the cost of the bridge loan so far. Now obviously if we had to make these payments every year it would be a problem.

But if it's just a one-time thing, it could save the government hundreds of billions in pension protection payments over decades.

The problem is an imbalance between shareholders and non-unionized employees. Shareholders get to bargain collectively through management, but workers have to bargain as individuals.

Actually I would say that banks did a pretty good job of using, or "leveraging". Those bankers are pretty smart, and a lot of them come from pretty geeky fields like physics, engineering, computer science, etc. Plus they had web-like technology long before the general public (like bloomberg terminals). And hell, you could the use of networking by investment banks goes back to the 1920s, when people would get up-to-date stock market information by telegraph.

These days, all banks have online banking. When you use your ATM card, your bank probably makes a lot more money via ATM fee then they ever did with you going in and seeing a teller.

In fact, I would argue that it wasn't a failure to embrace the internet that caused the banks problems. Rather it was an *over-enthusastic* embrace of information technology in general that caused their problems. A lot of the exotics that banks sold, like mezzanine CDOs, netted CDSes, blackbox statistical arbitrage would have been impossible without some pretty hard-core computational resources and the ability to make trades by computer.

Starbucks and Microsoft are two of the most successful companies in the world. Obviously they'll both have trouble in depression 2.0, but come on. Microsoft in particular's problem is that it's so huge there are no more real vectors for growth. It's reached it's "end state" No company can keep growing forever. It may be that Starbucks could grow more, but how many coffee drinkers are there?

New thinking means untested thinking. The last thing this country needs is a bunch of rich dilettantes with heads full of delusions of greatness. As I recall, it was that kind of thinking that got us into trouble in the first place (house prices will always go up! dot-com! etc!)

In my opinion Enrico's analysis is right, but I agree with Alessandro. Vozavi.com can acquire more interaction with people.

In a general way I think that Social Shopping site will be an important marketing tool. Unlikily only few European nation has these tools. Others are late to develop these application. In my opinion a nation with only Contestual Ad services cannot develop a significant e-commerce strategy.

Those guys are crazy. First of all, the time line is wrong. The depression started at the end of 1929, and I think any sane person would agree that there had been an insane bubble going, which means that any 1920s era regulation failed to stop the bubble from growing. These professors seemed to think that if we'd just deregulated even more, we'd have kept the bubble growing? That's preposterous.

Also, the idea middle class tax payers should have their wages garnished even more in order to 'infuse capital' into wall street at the very same time wall street charges outrageous credit card rates and bad mortgage deals while many Americans go without health care is politically unsustainable, and frankly perverse.

So Wall Street spent billions of dollars lobbying to relax regulations, and politicians accepted their bribes. Somehow that makes it less Wall Street's fault? The Politicians in D.C. were at best the sidekicks of the wall street looters.

Yeah, and the arsonists are the only ones who know how to put out the fire! Honest! But they won't do it unless you pay them millions of dollars in bonuses, because it's just so much work and no one but them is smart enough to do it.

But really, the house of cards has already collapsed, what we need to do now is build a new house out something a bit more sturdy. And the best way to do that is with new people, people who don't have have history of building houses of cards and telling you they're made from granite. Frankly, if you're not willing to work for less then $250k a year I don't want you running a system that our society depends on.

I have no problem with a few people on wall street making that kind of dough, but they shouldn't be making that kind of money at companies like Citibank and other large banks that have 60% of our nations assets or whatever.

I'd rather have people who want to make decent money and have a nice life and boring but rewarding job and make a quarter million then psychopaths who work 80 hours a week and are addicted to risk and won't get out of bed for less then $11 million a year.

Would you invest in a startup that wanted to pay it's employees 20% of it's latest valuation in bonuses a year? You'd think they were a ripoff and you'd be right.

This is a huge problem caused by the misuse of statistical datamining. People think "hey this is 99% accurate at detecting fraud, let's use it!" but they don't realize that if there are 100,000 good transactions for every fraudulent one, then 1,000 good will get flagged for EVERY SINGLE FRAUDULENT ONE!

There are tons of snake oil salesmen out there perverting statistics who don't understand what they're selling to people who don't understand what they're buying. It's disgusting. And it's also a much greater burden on people who are at the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum, because they have no way to 'appeal' the problems. A poor credit rating or errors can prevent people from getting loans, getting a job, getting an apartment, all kinds of problems that related to these statistical models that might not even work!

Well, there is a huge difference between assassinating an oppressive despot who tortures his own citizens (like Mugabe) and assassinating an elected leader like Mbeki just because he has ill conceived scientific policies.

Mbeki's government hasn't been out there banning condoms or anything like that, the AIDS policy isn't very effective, but he's not, or hasn't been actively fighting legitimate policies as far as I can tell.

By your logic it would be fine to assassinate any leader of a country with a poor healthcare system, which would by practically by definition cause excess death, or for global warming denialism.

John, there's no reason why a government health care plan would have approved that. It's true that private insurance companies have to look out for shareholders, but public insurance companies have to look out for the bottom line. It looks like the cost of a bone marrow transplant is around $200k, while an HPV vaccination costs about $125. So you're looking at vaccinating around 1,600 people for the cost of one transplant.

There are always going to be cost/benefit issues with any health care system.

The term was thought up by African Americans, apparently "popularized" by spike lee, who has a history of making rather sharp comments. I don't think Spike Lee would make a good GOP chairman either.

Also, the LA Times columnist never called Obama a "Magical Negro", he was criticizing people who thought of him that way. Also the whole song is offensive. Cramer never said anyone should invest in bear sterns, or hold on to the stock. What he said was that people shouldn't close their accounts with them, because they would get bought out. And, that's exactly what happened.

Obviously, Cramer has his issues, but people criticizing him on this point are really taking his comments out of context.

HCFS phobia is just that, a ridiculous phobia. It's no worse for you then regular sugar, in fact, it contains the same chemicals. Mercury won't kill you, in fact if you eat any seafood at all you're going to be eating tons of it. It's only if you get above a certain level that it causes problems.

Also, testing food with HCFS as an ingredient and finding mercury doesn't mean the mercury is from the HCFS. Did they check non-HCFS food and not find any? If not, then that really is a terrible study.

I like this that only affects new recipients. Under paulson, some solvent banks were basically forced to take the money and do mergers that were not necessary for *their* survival at the time, like Wells Fargo. It would be lame to come back later and make changes.

The other problem here is that if you allow compensation from dividends, you encourage high dividends, which will reduce their capitalization. Stockholders won't lose anything, but it encourages management to basically liquidate the company.

Last year my credit card company had been sending me 'convience' checks every couple of months that would expire after a while. At really low rates like 4% or 6%. In September they sent me checks with a 1% interest rate! That wasn't a teaser rate, that was the real rate! There was a 3% surcharge though (that would only apply once)

The kicker, of course, was that if I missed a payment, the interest rates would jack up. They're trying to get me to use the card again, saying I can get 4% on purchases over $300. This is U.S. Bank, so I guess they're finally getting around to distributing those TARP funds.

Citibank has actually been jacking up people's rates just because they shop at the same stores as people with bad credit!

I appreciate Stewart's efforts, but he kind of flubbed it. The problem was Sununu said he actually was for some regulation, and mentioned something about Freddie/Fannie, and then Stewart hammered him on the need for some regulation. But then sununu comes back and says "but I am for regulation!"

In reality he should have asked more about why Frieddie/Fannie was the only thing republicans ever brought up. He did finally mention that it was a kind of partisan thing at the end of that argument, but that was about it.

But I guess it's hard to have an argument with someone when they don't even admit to their actual beliefs and tries to change the subject.

Iowa doesn't have a simple referendum process to amend the constitution either. In order to change the constitution, you have to go through the (currently dem controlled) legislature. The standards are pretty high. I think it can end up as a referendum, or maybe not. Either way, you're not going to see the kind of instant populist campaign to repeal this.

on the other hand, I suppose it's possible that legislators might try to override this ruling, but would take a while.

There's a guy who, very sadly, is often stumbling around in an incoherent drunken stupor near that area of the tracks. I remember one occasion where he passed out on the tracks, and two people waiting for the train had to pull him off, because the train was due in 10 minutes. The rumor mill speculates that this is who was struck this morning, though we don't have an official answer on that yet. He was way down the platform, too far away from where others were waiting for anyone to see what was going on before it was too late to intervene.

Figure skater Kiira Korpi's illness seems not to end. Korpi's season starting is postponing again.

After over-exhaustion, flu and fewer Korpi has returned to ice and is practicing with changing success. Though the skater from Tampere has not fully recovered yet.

Korpi has been to all possible tests, but the reason for the illnesses has not been identified.

Korpi will miss the GP competition in Canada for the next weekend. Finland will be represented by Jenni Vähämaa. The French GP competition on 13th of November is still open issue for Korpi.

Last Friday's issue of Iltalehti (www.iltalehti.fi) featured an article of Kiira and contained good news:

This sight is long awaited! After a long autumn of illnesses, the figure skater Kiira Korpi glides in the Hakametsä ice rink with the other Tappara figure skating team. Friday's training program seemed light by amateur's eyes. Relaxed skating and only a few jumps. More than a double jump is not seen during one hour training.

"Now the situation seems better than earlier this autumn. I am in a good condition, but it could be better." Korpi says to Iltalehti.

A doctor from Tampere, Markku Tuominen, described Kiira's situation over the phone:

"Kiira has been away from the ice for about two months. She returned to ice training about one and half weeks ago. In the beginning the problem was with the neuro-muscular system of Kiira's feet. She didn't recover normally after training. Then later in the autumn she got a virus infection." Tuominen says.

A rumor circulates that the problem isn't physical, but a mental burn-out. This theory is denied by Tuominen.

Because of the illnesses, Korpi has missed every competition in the start of the season. It is a bad thing, because Korpi should gain her place in the European Championships. Finland has three places and four top skaters are competing from them. Laura Lepistö and Susanna Pöykiö have competed strongly in this season, also junior sensation Jenni Vähämaa is competent. Within the sports circles, there has been speculation that Korpi will not get better in time for European Championhips, and Finland will be represented by Lepistö, Pöykiö and Vähämaa.

"Of course the European Championships is my goal. I will start by season in a invitation competition in Germany in about two weeks." Korpi says.

The selection criteria for European Championships is strict. Three best performed skaters in this season will be selected. The last opportunity to show talent is Finnish Championships just before Christmas.

Korpi herself doesn't want to comment on her possibilities for European Championships. It is although sure that the two months training gap will show.

"Kiira is taking it easy for starts. I got a text message from her, where she said that the trainings have gone well without pain." says the doctor Tuominen who answered the phone from China.

Molti degli esempi forniti nelle slides sono però presenti solo in lingue differenti dall'italiano. Deduco quindi che non siano presenti in Italia.

Francamente non riesco a capire come tu faccia ad essere ottimista sul commercio elettronico in Italia se poi le risorse che fornisci non ci sono qui da noi.

I moved an old blog I had to Tumblr after I couldn't afford the hosting any more, and what I did was move it from sozter.com to sozter.net, import the old posts to Tumblr via the API, and set up a Google App Engine app on the sozter.com to 301 redirect visits from the old .com URLs to the new .net ones at Tumblr. It's worked fine so far.

Pixel Logo is my personal favorite stock logo service. You can buy a decent logo for less than 200 bucks. I'd imagine they'd make a custom logo for you too, but I've never tried it. The only thing is that you need to make sure you get an Exclusive Logo, because on some of them you get the copyright and on others they are able to sell the same logo to other people.

I just pinched this code (knowing very little JS) and swore for a while because it wouldn't work.

Copy and paste into TextMate resulting in some weird versions of apostrophes and quote marks, as if it was using smart quotes. I had to delete them all and retype them manually to get it to work.

It should be easier to find people interested in testing 3.0.x beta version because the trunk version will have to many bugs for a long time.

Nobody will use the nightlies oder beta of security release if you don't present an USP to them. The USP of these betas is a higher security cause known security bugs are already fixed.

Regarding the HFS one, "Remote attacker can cause a kernel panic."

This particular one can only be triggered if the victim can be tricked into mounting the malicious disk image, then deleting a specific file. So it's much less severe than the other disk image issues, which are triggered on mount.

I think your comments are pretty accurate, people get stream ciphers (of which RC4 is the only well-known form) but don't get block ciphers, even when they're dressed up as stream ciphers. So even a block cipher in OFB or CTR mode is too hard because you need an IV, and people can't deal with that.

RFC 4345 is pretty weird, it was pushed through by an individual (with some support from others, apparently SSH "needed" a stream cipher although no-one was ever able to explain why) based on different implementers hacking around with RC4 "fixes" in SSHv2 when the sensible thing to do would have been to just make RC4 SHOULD NOT in the main SSH RFC(s).

Incidentally the special balls/Aztecs give bonus Pang when you hit a Pangya shot on them, so you get all, or most of your money back when using them.

And you do want to use all the stat boosting equipment you can afford to make those long distant hole-in-one shots in license mode easier. I found with some characters it was impossible to hit the ball far enough unless you got lucky with the wind or unlocked a stronger character through story mode.

I didn't notice clothing giving a stats bonus, only a 10% Pang bonus for the first time wearing it. So you want to go with 18 hole wander/free play mode with new clothing equipped to max out the amount of bonus Pang you get. But then I can't read Japanese so I may be missing something.

Nah, it's just following supply and demand, retailers carry more stock for games they think will be popular, as a result the big name games generally come down in price a lot quicker than the "rarer" games.

Look at Disgaea on PSP, it's still selling at full price despite being a PS2 port and released 2-3 years ago.

After staring at the Project Diva logo I noticed the eyes were asymmetric, then realized it spells PJD with the eyes and the nose (PJD=Project Diva).

If this game can have nice stages then why not Idolmaster SP too? Maybe it would take too long too load, or maybe they were planning up to 3 characters on stage at once but cut it late in development?

I kinda agree with both you and them. On the one hand, it is a delusion and you probably will be better off dealing with it as early as possible. But on the other, I can't see why that should have to involve medication that you're not happy with. I wouldn't be happy with it either. Have they not talked about any other alternatives? I don't mean any hippy trippy herbal medicines or anything like that, maybe cognitive behavioral therapy or something?

Yeah, I agree.

I think the writing is also on the wall that the degree won't be worth much in the future. Since undergrad became 'mandatory' for most everyone, the quality of the degrees has been diluted a lot. College is more like high school these days. It's a basic, mass consumption ticket that signals you haven't gone seriously wrong in your life, but also doesn't show anything particularly impressive about you.

I don't think the graduate degrees are like that, yet.

It feels like a waste of life when you know it's going to be taken with a grain of salt. If I were hiring people, a college degree would still put someone ahead of those without, but there's PLENTY of room for exceptional people. I bet in 10 years college degrees will carry a lot less weight. No-one goes around saying "I graduated high school, that shows I'm a good worker" anymore - everyone expects you to have graduated high school if you want to work a reasonably good job. It just indicates your life hasn't fallen apart in some massive way, nothing more. College is the same way - it's a basic prereq, sure, but it's not anything special. And with how broken education is, the reality is you're looking to hire someone who gained real skills around the edges of their college experience.

With no job security coming from them there's no reason to keep worshiping paper credentials. The tickets just don't provide the benefits they used to, partially because the education itself got watered down. Most of the rides at the carnival your academic tickets got you into have been dismantled.

Screw it, I don't want to bother with that old carnival; these old tickets won't get me into the rides at the really cool new theme park being built over here. ->

If you'd like to do debugging right from within vim, try vimgdb from the clewn project: http://clewn.sourceforge.net/

I used it for a year and a half to do gdb debugging and it integrates *very* nicely with vim -- both from the terminal version and the GUI version.

(and you can still use screen with the terminal version of vim -- doesn't everyone do that to deal with code on remote servers? :-D )

The script was leaked a few weeks back and it's a turd. Tucker claimed it was substantially rewritten since then (that script was about 9 months old), but he also claimed it was pure comic gold before the rewrite.

Synopsis: recent Law school graduate Tucker is mediating his parent's divorce and frustrated by it. He takes friends Aaron (caught his ex girlfriend cheating on him and now hates all women) and Jeff, who's about to be married and pussy whipped on a road trip to Texas to visit a legendary strip club that's closing down.

On their first night, some bachelorettes assume they're gay and invite them to see some male strippers. Tucker is thrown out of the club for punching one of the male strippers.

On their second night, they go back to the strip club and Tucker threatens to have them arrested for prostitution unless their drinks are comped. Aaron goes home with a stripper and stops hating women.

Tucker brings a stripper back to the hotel. Before they can have sex, she takes a massive shit, clogging the toilet. Tucker, who has spent most of the movie constipated, is forced to use the lobby toilet and leaves a trail of diarrhea all over the floor, bathroom, etc.

That's about it, but with more flashbacks, scrubs-style alternate editing, and terrible dialogue.

Impressive machine you have. I couldn't even hope to have such good fps on my machine even at the "fastest framerate" setting (6850, 4870HD, 2G memory), it turns into semi-slideshow when four warbands converge.

I know devs like to harp about performance boosts, but I can't remember never EVER having played an MMO where their "boosts" led to actual performance improvements. I'm not expecting 1.3.2 to improve anything either.
