I've had a number of opportunities to move from DC to SF and each time, I've declined it. One of the major things has been the big fish/small pond thing. In DC, the intensity and amount of chatter is a fraction of SF and that much easier to participate in.

Re: Startup School

Thanks, I didn't see that they had it online so was just trying to get some conversation going. I may end up doing the flight thing too. For $40 and saving quite a bit of time, it makes lots of sense.

Also, *if* I do end up doing the flight and you need access back to the Metro system, my wife has already agreed to pick me/us up and drop you at Dunn Loring Metro. It will save you a trip on the Washington Flyer ($8 and 20-30+ minutes).

I'm trying to finalize in the next 48 hours or so.

Re: Secret sauce

That'd be hilarious because - I think - a SCOTUS judge can only be removed if they can be proven to be mentally unfit.. which is unlikely to happen since he was just voted in.

Re: Secret sauce

Did you catch this through O'Reilly today?

http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2005/09/rober...

Re: Rest in peace

I was following it off and on for a while and thought it was a joke until MarkTAW stepped into high gear and started tracking down IP's, the embassy officials, etc.

After that, I was hopeful but didn't think it'd work.

Re: Business Consulting Etiquette

When I read this one, I was reminded of my own "Art of the Introduction" - http://caseysoftware.com/blog/the-art-of-the-in... - where you have a very limited window of someone's time/attention to give them something of interest/value. As soon as you allow the government to own or even subsidize something, you allow them to control it... that applies to the internet too. Look at the way they currently treat libraries. You can count on the same thing happening to ISP's if what you suggest actually happens.

And by the way, it's already failed once... in the mid-90's there was an attempt to bring schools online. All it resulted in was *millions* and *millions* being spent to buy new Cisco gear that sat in closets. Thanks, but no thanks.

Re: Tech Policy is the new Economic Policy.

My other issue stands... if the govt pays for it or subsidizes it, you have to plan on them using it for their own purposes. Or deciding to monitor it when they decide it is worthwhile. It's a dangerous line to cross. I'd go for Comcast's bandwidth caps before I allowed my traffic to be monitored by the Feds at their whim.

Re: Chapter 11, Pt. 2: Hard Lessons from the Chapter

Ray,

Thanks for sharing your experiences here. While those are still strong indicators and aren't irrelevant, they're only part of the picture. In the last couple years, the number, variety, and types of tech companies in the area has not only exploded, but they're becoming better connected.

I think this is where DC is excelling and growing in ways that the WaPo doesn't detect and probably can't get their minds around... yet.

Re: Tech Cocktail DC 2

That was great and one of the more creative retrospectives! The remaining 24,020 (13.4 percent) of the aliens had criminal records (20,346 from Border Patrol stations and 3,674 from ports of entry)."

And then read Table 5 directly below that quote.

Source: http://www.usdoj.gov/oig/reports/plus/e0501/results2.htm

Re: The Case For The Fence

So you're saying those people - who are already established to be criminals - should be allowed in?

Re: The Case For The Fence

Sorry... but you're completely wrong. 1 in 8 are people that should be in prison somewhere. And many of them were repeat offenders (15.6% had 5+ violations, 4.4% had 10+ violations).

If you actually read the paragraph before and after Table 5, you'll see that those who had purely administrative violations of immigration were not considered any further.

At the very least, this is a compelling reason to know who is coming in and filter out these people but allowing people "freely migrate" is suicidal.

Re: Army Facing Crisis Over Officers Leaving The Service?

I have a buddy who just completed his tour as a 1st Lt. in Iraq and promptly left after his commitment was done. He had some sort of pre-qualification for Ranger school but his Captain kept him around instead... to do what you ask? To fill out paper work for commendations.

Then, since his Captain and another had a pissing contest, he was required to hand-deliver the paper work to another Captain for approval.. outside the Green Zone, almost 50 miles away.

Incompetence.

Re: Illegal Immigration Protests Spark Backlash

That's what I'm doing after reading this one:

http://defendourborders.com/?q=node/86

Re: Downsides To The West Coast

As soon as he said to Audry "I'll be right back", I knew something was up... that and I couldn't imagine him finishing the season actually kissing the woman he loved. After many years of all the knights attempting to best one another, he finally announced the single contest that will resolve it all.

The big day came and the first knight came foward...
"I am the youngest knight of the land and have more youth and vitality than anyone else. To prove my worth, I will lift 2 bricks with my penis!"

He succeeded, the crowd cheered, the women fainted, and the band played appropriately.

A second knight came forward...
"I am the bravest knight of the land and have slain more dragons than any three knights combined. To prove my worth, I will lift 4 bricks with my penis!"

He succeeded, the crowd cheered, the women fainted, and the band played appropriated.

A third knight came foward...
"I am the oldest knight of the land and have been more experience and have trained most of our other knights. To prove my worth, I will lift 6 bricks with my penis!"

He succeeded, the crowd cheered, the women fainted, and the band played appropriated.

A silence covered the field as no other knight stepped foward. And then the King spoke....
"I am your King. I am the wisest, bravest, strongest, and the leader of my people. To prove my worth, I will lift 10 bricks with my penis!"

He succeeded, the crowd cheered, the women fainted, and the band played God Save the Queen.

Re: Margaret Cho Naked

Thanks... He reviewed Internet casinos. He had links to them, and ran ads by them. He fancied himself a guide to an uncharted frontier, even compiling a list of "rogue casinos" that had bilked gamblers.

All that, says the state -- the ads, the linking, even the discussing -- violates a new state law barring online wagering or using the Internet to transmit "gambling information."

Re: Proud To Be From North Dakota

The wife and I always kid around about starting a restaurant called "Unlimited Smoking" and then requiring anyone entering (employees, patrons, etc) to sign a release before they can enter... would probably get huge press and visitors...

Neither of us smoke.

Re: Strange Statues From Around The World

So I found the one referenced...
