in Social Media is Rife with Experts but Starved of Authorities on PR2.0
This is definitely a well thought out and accurate post, but I'm just sick of hearing people complain about 'social media experts'

The problem is not the experts in the broad sense of the meaning, it's these ridiculous people going around touting themselves as experts.

The way I see it... There's nothing wrong if others are calling you an expert. Now, If you have to call *yourself* an expert, you're probably not. Especially in the social media landscape where influence rules.

in 5 Essential Traits for Community Managers on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Great list! Another I would add is a strong sense of curiosity--it helps a community manager get to know community members personally, because you can't fake genuine interest. Also if someone has a questions that you're generally curious about to, you'll definitely be prompt getting them an answer.

in Worm Regards from Canada Revenue Agency on Dave Delaney : Dave Made That
Unfortunately emails like these keep going around because someone, somewhere is still falling for it. Sad.

BTW-I came in via your Tweet, which read like it was a viral campaign from CRA to get people talking about their tax returns. Can you imagine?

in User data ownership on Facebook and why it doesn’t matter on Scobleizer
It's ridiculous to hear all this complaining. Bottom line is DON'T LIKE IT? DON'T USE IT! I can't believe how many people are starting groups on Facebook to complain about Facebook's TOS.

Yea the possibilities of what FB can do with such data can be scary, but have they done anything yet? Has Facebook ever done anything harmful to its users with this type of information? Yes, there was the whole Beacon thing when it first came out, but FB realized the mistake and pulled the program.

in What is the Value of Twitter? on OverlayBlog
I use Twitter heavily for work as part of a bigger strategy to increase traffic to our site as well as to get partners to sign up and post on our site. Other methods to reach these goals include blogging (posting and reading/commenting), attending events, joining relevant social networks in the industry (to name a few). I do spend a lot of time on Twitter but I definitely get wayyy more value out of Twitter. In fact just this week I've had 3 potential partners contact ME through Twitter about joining our site. Plus looking at our analytics it's consistently one of the top 10 sources of traffic.

So you're missing the value gained and how it contributes to business. If it's not, than that time on Twitter can be perceived as a waste, but if it's helping reach the bottom line (and it's measured), it's certainly a good investment of time.

That's how I see it. However, if you aren't able to measure that value, is it worth it? I'd still say yes, but that's my opinion as a die-hard twitter addict.

Congrats! And I know exactly how you feel, though I definitely don't think you can beat me at Trivial Pursuit. Certainly not the '90s edition.

BTW-Love the blog!!

in Are you going to BlogWorld Expo? on The New PR
Sadly I won't be there, but I think I heard a couple others from Ottawa will be.

Oh and say hi to George Favvas of SmartHippo.com if you see him, my soon-to-be employer! He's speaking on Friday I believe...

in Inbox Taming for Busy People on Chris Brogan
Impressive!

I like the idea of Evernote, but also fear I would forget about it and lose key information. Though maybe that's my own organization problem???

Either way, I'm inspired.

Oh yea, and let's not forget--Twitter has the fun lexicon to go with it: Tweet, Tweeple/Tweeps, Twitterati, Tweet up...

in Identi.ca Is More About What Comes Next on Chris Brogan
I've signed up but haven't really had a chance to check it out yet. The problem is I've already got a lot of friends on Twitter and now it's like starting over! Plus, obviously I've got pretty used to Twitter, eccentricities and all.

I thought Plurk was a really great alternative, but haven't been on there lately really...

It'll be interesting to see what happens with identi.ca though.

Fantastic idea. I really haven't been commenting enough lately. I blame Twitter for eating up all my spare time.

That's great news. I love to hear when companies are paying attention and reacting!

Good luck, I hope you are able to retrieve your data.

in Things you say that make you sound stupid on The New PR
"Utilize"

First of all, it's a useless word. As when people speak it, they usually mean 'use.'

Utilize, however, is supposed to mean using an object for a purpose other than its intended purpose. Such as "he utilized a screwdriver to open the door."

Though in that case, it's perfectly acceptable to use "use" anyway. Most people use it incorrectly because they think it makes them sound smarter, though it does not. In fact, I grant them negative points.

Glad I could get that off my chest.
