Often, I need to 'make room' by initiating an idea for 'real' (be in tangible or virtual - like code)

Though all the ideas can be maddening, I also get HUGE amounts of energy from having them and especially implementing - even if it's just to make a start. Not all ideas make it to a screen though, which is why I need cloning or funding.

Who knows, a few of them just might might some money.

Most ideas I have had have always led to better things, be it a greater knowledge and understanding of something, or a new job.

I'm a self-made 'citizen geek/programmer' - self-taught on the web and trial and error. But the secret is keeping that attention. Nurturing it. Growing it. Being nice to it. Respecting it.

Indeed, we need to trust those who are doing that to us. I created an similar application for plasma screens and bigger ones around the BBC in London, Washington and New York. Also, those massive screens you might see at railway staions around the country are fed by RSS and other xml formats, delivering a nice video payload with 'extras' like news, weather, market data etc.

The ones that feed from just RSS, without direct journo input just run and run. They clean up after themselves and do clever stuff with images and are also network aware - where they show someting nice when the network goes off and spring back to life. Flash makes like easy - and informs - as well being low maintenance. Cool! The coolest thing about it the rss data has already been through the editorial process for publishing on the news website, so no need to have bespoke content for it. It's there already - just bigger ;)

Good to see you again tonight, Robert ;) Another interesting evening!

Re: Goodbye Europe!

yay! Happy {insert festival here}!! :)

This blogroll needs to exist on the same domain as your blog to work, due to Flash security measures. This version was built for the OPML Editor community of bloggers using Dave Winer's free sowftware.

But that's OK. Just point me to whichever one of your many blogrolls you want and I'll build one that would work for you too (and potentially anyone in the same domain.com - yes? ;) hello? heh! )

this should be quite easy to fix up. Then the PMA430 gave the choice of MP3 or WAV.

The thing is, is that the device also has av editing features on the device. You can't do this (so easily) with MP3 as WAV.
I met with the the developers of the Archos and fed them a bunch of ideas about this along with a load of easy quick-win features they could add.
This was while I was at BBC News developing apps and systems for mobile journalists to create and upload content from the road (or pocket)

Mobile wifi players will be interesting - the Archos PMA430 has wifi on board, a linux-basd os, and SDK and people did start to create podcatching apps for the device, with no need for a desktop at all. They were clunky though. But they *did* work.

Trouble is, with mobile wifi is the increased power consumption. Less power to actually play the media downloaded.

I cant wait to see the offerings from both Apple and Microsoft.

But I think Nokia are already WAY ahead of the game, with their N91 phone. With GPRS AND WIFI built in with a 4gb harddisk on board and 'normal' headphone jacks as standard. Loads of apps on Symbian to be made for this and also Flash player support too - I've alreadt built the RSS reader for it :)

I want one ;)

Until the next thing comes along...

Re: Why I don’t use Flash

Robert,

A while ago, you'd seen my Flash OPML Reading list /blogroll and rather liked it ;)

Here's another one - http://readerss.com/opml/

And not forgetting the first ever:
http://www.blugg.com/caster/

;)

Re: Why I don’t use Flash

Also, I should reccommend listening to BoagWorld, a podcast from two Brits about webdesign. I had to rebuild a machine recently and thought I would try the Vista Beta we got at Gnomedex. It actually helped me get my XP install running for some reason, after some driver issues.

But the one huge factor I thought I'd drop my tuppence on, is that immediately after intalling Vista (and sam goes for XP) is the first thing your brand-spanking new install of Windows ever tells you is:

"Warning: Your computer may be at risk"!! WTF!? )

MacOSX welcomes you and makes you feel at ease (even the animations are more similar ;) )

I'll also say that I'm primarily a Windows user, but am now fairly platform agnostic. I just wanted to share that thought with you about the install 'welcome'. eek!

See you at CES! :)

Re: BlogHausing at CES

HI Robert,
I shall be there at about 2pm tomorrow - I leave London in a few hours.

Looking forward to seeing everyone, and I have some great ideas (we think) I want to share with yourself and John ;)

I'm still regretting not taking you up on that invite to the Vegas/JasonC party ;)))

Not this time sir - oh no ;) See you there!!!

U huh u huh u huh thangyewvurrymush

Re: Google Dev: the Next Big programming Language

Are you guys coming to Barcelona for 3GSM?

Re: Adobe enters feed reader race

i wouldnt say there was a 'race' ;)

Flash has a been great for making feed readers for ages in my career. I thought it syncs/copies them over for playback?

Can you confirm?

I have had a TV out for yeeears with a tv or projector hooked up. Logitech did nice job on their 'lean back' media player, controlling it via their bluetooth controller.

Soon portable media players will have much more power and equal quality to these Apple boxes (iTunes hard drives with a tv-out) and they'll record what you want and let you play it where you want.

I'm sure this Apple TV is a nice product. They do make nice hardware. But to 'it rocks' might be an overstatement? Hmm? ;)

It just doesn't seem revolutionary at all. Maybe its just about the simplicity for all the iTunes users who are already forced into using that interface for their padlocked content. ;p

Re: Apple TV rocks

Thanks Goebbels for clearing that up :)

I like that pausing thing too. Both you and Jeremiah did an excellent job. It was like hangin' out with you at a conference in SF for hours! From London!

Excellent experience overall!

Can't the ppl at Verizon Wireless have 'a word'? ;P - they're a Podtech client http://podcast.com/show/6524

Let's face it, the Flash Media/Communication Server technology to do this had been around for years.

IMHO the KEY enabler here for 'mobleScoble' to work is the advancement and availability of the wireless connections these days.

This is just the beginning.

Mark my works, in two years the streams/speeds/quality/tools and UIs available will make all this look so lame.

It will be mutli-screen-mega-stream-mashup madness (with a side order of twitterness)

I have seen ustream 'listening' to people's requests. First the irc chat rooms. Now pop-out chat etc too. and more.

There's so much can be done here with all the archived content too. I hope to help along there in some ways. ;p

BTW: here's the moment you met justin.tv ;)
http://kozcast.com/scoble/scoble_justin.jpg

cheers! They use incredibly small samples (in the thousands - see in the uk: BARB ) using special boxes in their living rooms, where they are required to tap in which channel they are watching.

Our whole TV scheduling and commissioning efforts are based on these ridiculously low samples.

It's a similar problem with podcasts, where there's going to be less actual listens than downloads.

But then, I bet there's plenty of people who have a TV set on and leave the room. Hmmm.

This is a really interesting discussion for the whole media industry.
