I think that you are going to be really enjoying WordPress, Barry.
There are a lot of plugins that you can use, from the worldwide body of users of the software, whom have worked hard to give something back.
It is nice to see an effort that has gone so smoothly so far, involving people from three different continents. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of the cocoon.

Thank you, Barry.
For the Owlies, and for your kinds words. (That Jill is prodigious.)
It is a good thing that I don't get paid by the word, or someone would be bankrupt. I was busy clacking away on my keyboard in the office last week, and one of my co-workers was doing the same, and someone stuck their head in the office and checked to see if we were really typing that fast.
Somehow, in a contest against Jeeves, I think I might be a John Henry contestant. I suspect the Butler has some more processing power than me.
I'm going to take those next 10,000 posts one at a time Barry. Thank you for helping to make a good many of them a pleasure with your own thoughtful and interesting posts.
Great links, by the way.
Cheers.

I like the perspective that you attain with this post. The web does shrink the world, and make it smaller.
The amount of information that is available to us at any one time is greater. I think that some strategies will develop that can help us cope with this flood of data, and enable us to turn it into useful information.
RSS/Atom is one start towards a tool that can enable us to keep up with our interests. Blogs aren't just an explosion of different viewpoints, but an opportunity to find people who share a thirst for topics common to our own, and to add their biases and views on a subject. Using something like Bloglines can help us manage some of that torrent of words and images.
Collaborative efforts such as forums, and decentralized blog networks can help us find useful information that we might not find on our own.
News alerts, of the type provided by Google and others, can help us filter the web.
I find it fascinating to think about the impact that Radio, and then Television had upon societies. The web allows us considerably more choices. It's something we have to adapt to. I think that it is something that we will adapt to by working with others.

in IMC 2004 - Footnote - the most memorable quotation | BPWrap on BPWrap
I had the opportunity to attend a User Interface Engineering presentation with Jared Spool and Christine Perfetti last summer. It was a day long seminar in center city Philadelphia, and very enjoyable.
I walked away from their presentation with a lot of ideas that I've kept in mind and used ever since.
As for pdf files, it is possible to embed links in them. It's also likely that your pdf is a document that you want people to print, and the layout of the page is important.
Why not include instructions that "the pdf file will open in a new window. When you are finished with it, just close that window, and you'll be back where you started."
I have seen a number of sites where their creator didn't include a way to return back to where you've come from without using the back button. Only a very small handful were done that way on purpose, and worked. (I believe those pages were bout hypertext theory, too.

Funny the coincidences we run into. You wouldn't be identical twins, would you?

It sounds like this was a really great conference, Barry. Thanks for writing about it and giving us a taste of the three days of lectures and networking.
