I'm sorry. Sometimes the littlest things are the hardest ones to let go of, because they feel like home.

(P.S. I love you dearly, and I'm reading faithfully, but for some reason, it's taking forever for me to be able to make comments, so I'm not commenting as often!)

María Do you mean on my blog or just in general? Disqus takes a while to post
comments on my blog, but I guess that's because they have to go to their
server first.

in Motrin Steps Up, Apologizes on odd time signatures
I don't know if the moms who protested are going to fully appreciate how quickly Motrin and their agency moved on this, but I can speak from personal experience with ad campaigns and say the ability to pull ads quickly is challenging, and it's impressive that they're solving this as quickly as they are. Large companies -- particularly large, consumer packaged goods companies -- move glacially under ordinary circumstances. They should be applauded for stepping up and remedying the situation as they have.

You're absolutely right, Karoli. Time for constructive dialogue now!

Thank FUCKING GOD the comment page is working for me tonight. (Don't mind me, I'm just bitchy because I'm bitchy.)

I dig the new template, and I'll not only let you off the hook for commenting, but you don't even have to read me. How great am I?

in And tears stream down my face… on Immoral Matriarch: Catechizer
I will never have any problem looking into the face of my little biracial son and daughter and telling them they can BE ANYTHING. This country will elect them President if they so choose to live their life in a way to make that a possible path for their life. And this was no close race. This is as close to a mandate as any candidate has had in many election cycles. AMAZING.

Unfortunately, my first thought was that he's speaking in a public park with 70,000 people watching him. I fear for his safety now more than ever. I like that he isn't allowing fear to make his decisions and that he's as inclusionary as ever.

in Just a Question on Immoral Matriarch: Catechizer
I'm exhausted by this "guilt-by-association" thing the McCain campaign keeps hitting him with. Ayers, Reznik, Wright... it's becoming tedious. The McCain supporters who keep spewing this stuff either don't know or have forgotten some key names of their own: Keating, Diamond, Liddy, etc. And you know what? I LIKE that Obama's campaign doesn't mention that crap. I like that they don't find it necessary to dredge up the past, because they're busy talking about the future. In the end, if McCain loses, it won't be because of the economy. Not really. It will be because he and his team played politics the old school way. Experience isn't always a positive -- sometimes it means you just end up doing the same broken things over and over again. Just ask Rumsfeld and Cheney.

I'm formally protesting this post. Loralee has clearly been digging through MY blog drafts and not her own. I swear that German thing is totally mine. But that SVU thing? Notsomuch. Okay, it's possible some of those are hers. But only some of them.

Well, holy shit. Slap my ass and call me a... I don't even know what to say! YOU LINKED TO ME IN THIS POST?

That's it. Tomorrow, we are officially putting the brakes on teaching The Ambassador "Go Obama" and switching to "Maria fucking rocks". (He's already got 1/3 of that line down, so how hard can Maria and rocks be?)

Thanks, babe. I laughed my ass off when I saw that. Thanks for including me in great company with Momo Fali and Chicken Feed, too.

in I GUESS I’m a Mommy Blogger… | Immoral Matriarch: Catechizer on Immoral Matriarch: Catechizer
How did I miss this one? Gawd, it's great. Shit, I'm a mommy blogger. Well, at least I share interesting things with my kid like how to make nuclear weapons, right? And who else would I want him to learn the word "fucking" from? And why wouldn't I be proud that nearly a month later, he's still using it in the appropriate context, even though I have stopped using it in front of him? That's parenting. I like your version of it and mine a lot better than some of the others out there.

Promise to tell me if I become "just" a mommy blogger? Promise?

I always thought I was a narcissist, but now I know I'm not. Because I didn't think you were talking about me AT ALL.

Excellent advice (all three parts). You nailed my biggest pet peeve of partial feeds AND those assholes who get pissy if you don't read their blog every day. All the more reason to love the crap out of you.

in This is Your Nation on White Privilege on Immoral Matriarch: Catechizer
While I'm on board with much of what Wise says, I think there are more American psychological barriers than just race at play here. The biggest gap I think he's missing is the massive inferiority complex that uneducated/undereducated Americans feel when confronted by anyone who uses words that contain more than two syllables. Polls show that people want "a president like me", and I say that's because they'd rather hear stories about Bush choking on a pretzel while watching football ("Remember that time when Mike choked on his own vomit during Superbowl 19?! Haha!") than listen to a man talk about how his parents told him he could do anything and then set out to help him prove it. I think it's not just Obama's race that is the issue, but his success. He makes people feel badly about themselves, and it wouldn't matter if he was white or black -- they don't like that Harvard JD of his. That's why he plays well to the educated upper class -- they know they want someone smarter than them in the office. Not someone just as stupid.

Bigotry is definitely the problem. But I'd define bigotry much more broadly than simply race or class.

You and I may disagree a bit on Hillary's speech last night, but on everything else, it's clear we agree violently. Fabulous post. Dead-on right, and applicable to everything in life, not just politics. Although, given the climate of nominations and elections, it has never, ever been more true for politics.

Karoli Hi Missives, and thanks! and you're right, it has never been more true for politics. For the first time, though, I felt like there were honest efforts to bridge the divide that the primaries created, and I just hope everyone can stay focused on how incredibly important it is to NOT allow the nonsense of the Roves and Republicans to prevail this time.

in Thank You, Hilary. on Immoral Matriarch: Catechizer
That was, without question, the most selfless part of her speech, and if she had just worked that point for another 45 seconds, all would have been forgiven. She did not do what she was supposed to do -- she did not tell her supporters that Obama is ready to lead. She did not hand over the baton in a graceful, supportive manner. She was begrudging at best. At the end of the primaries, I was starting to suspect she was a self-centered douchebag. Now I know she is.

Interesting that after watching Bill tonight, I feel compelled to vote for him all over again. DAMN, he was good.

I'm willing to cut the chick with triplets some slack, since I don't know how you have a cohesive thought with three kids all the same age (especially when they're newborns). But I couldn't agree more -- the rest of 'em are lying.

It's about priorities. I have not missed a single shower in 25 months and two days, and it really irks me when people say, "Oh, now that you're having another one, you'll never get a shower!" Just try to stop me.

As the mom of a gorgeous little biracial boy and the wife of a man who has been called more racial slurs than I ever could imagine people were capable of, I have a similar sensitivity, but what really chaps my hide about this is that the editor and writer KNEW what they were doing. As I read it, that was a list of warnings, with the exception of the comment about minorities, and so they parsed their grammar carefully and titled the section, "Be Aware". It strikes me as a conscious act.

I do want to address what someone else said about how it's hip to adopt an African baby but not an African-American baby and something to the effect of not understanding why people aren't adopting from our own backyard. As someone who has considered and is still considering adoption, I have a personal preference for going to India to look for a child. Because of my husband's background, I'm deeply aware of the issues in that country and feel particularly compassionate for the children there (and there are far more orphans there than in the U.S). It doesn't make me any less caring to leave this country and adopt a child, nor does it make me unpatriotic or unconcerned about the children here. It simply means I have a different perspective. Namely, that adopting from the U.S. is no more and no less noble than adopting from China, Russia or India, because this is quickly becoming one world. In my opinion, a child saved is a child saved. If someone feels a particular affinity for one country over another or cannot get a baby here and don't feel up to the task of adopting a six-year-old, let's all just be thankful they have a heart big enough to take in ANY child.
