I did wonder if they are still startups, but in your list is 37 Signals, Last.fm, and Threadless. I don't think of them so much as startups anymore so I included them.

*shrug* this is really a different conversation though...

I've used about 1 in 3 of the listed above. The applications I actively use that aren't on list are:

Flickr, LinkedIn, Jaiku, FeedBurner, and Dopplr

I imagine it's actually highly specific to the situation, with far too many variables to *know* how you'd react... but when you get onto "I", I'm obvious bias.

Many I'm being naive, but I just don't "get" this one. As a founder, and acting CEO I look forward to the day I can hand over and step aside, don't get me wrong I love it, but...

A good coders aim is to make himself redundant, always. If what he/she builds is so good they're no longer needed on that problem that's a job well done. You move onto a hopefully harder, and currently unsolved challenge/problem/etc

Now, isn't it similar? When a business hits the point where your work on that problem is done. Not to say the problem is solved but your work on it is no longer needed, no longer the right person to have at the helm isn't stepping aside a compliment to you?

To be fair, given my personal experience with HSBC business accounts I a) am not surprised and b) wouldn't go near them again.

There is an argument that by not accepting your application they're actually doing you a favour ;-)

Given Google Application Engine I imagine Python + Django hackers are about to become even more in demand! Disqus, good luck.

Absolutely, where you can decentralize control, and allow one of the big players to worry about it, do.

I'm still surprised when startups waste engineers time fixing their email servers. Move it to Google Applications! Same with servers and EC2. Same with storage and S3. I'd rather have 50 odd top ops folk at Google/Amazon worry about my 99.9% uptime then the few on-site engineers.

... I'm sure there is a few specific cases when you'd need to DIY, 80/20 rule.

I don't own a TV, and don't plan to change that any time soon. At the recent Apple keynote with Steve Jobs talking about all-in-one devices, I have a feeling replacing TV might be in that all-in-one.

I've been playing with implementation of mobile apps a little myself and can't decided between:

1) mobile app
2) mobile app of web app
3) web app that works in mobile browser

I know it's a case of the best tool for the job, and Apple's announcements will kick start option 3. Will Apple's implementation of option 3 be good enough to start dismissing the other 2, will Nokia/Motorola adapt to some extent?

As your interested, I use a Nokia N73. No keyboard.

Vodafone release a data package on the 1st (can't sign up until the 4th - they "update the network" over the weekend) and from the 7th half their network is down. Related? No idea.

But, they do give you the first month for free - save £7.50. Gee, thanks. The £200 a month I paid waiting seems like nothing now I've got a free month.

... I here 3 has a good data package.

The problem with two "twits" going on a date is that their phone keeps beeping, telling them what fun all their other friends are having - it becomes a very unsocial date.

But, I still love twitter :)
