Thankfully, we came off light this year.

This is the second year running that we experienced floods! Last year struck George much more heavily. We had something like 400mm rain in 24 hours last year. This year it was almost the same but in a period of about 5 days, so it was not so devastating.

Even now, the weather is weird. We had one summers day this week, the rest of the time it was cold and rainy. Most weird.

Re: Ananzi (the largest search engine??) now optimising for Google…

WTF?! I've got the world of respect for these okes and as a "minor" (in blogging terms, not in age) look up to them (Yes, Paul, to you too!). They are not a great example at the moment. I was doing exactly the same yesterday. I checked it out and I'm quite frankly very impressed. The user interface is awesome. I love it how you can open an feed item in NNW as a background loading icon while you continue to read other feeds. The only, ONLY objection I have at the moment is that the built in browser, although it renders pages perfectly, does not support flash. That means, if you embed a Youtube video, I can't simply view it in the built in browser. I was doing exactly the same yesterday. I checked it out and I'm quite frankly very impressed. The user interface is awesome. I love it how you can open an feed item in NNW as a background loading icon while you continue to read other feeds. I really appreciate it.

You raise some serious issues here, which I have not given much thought to really. My opinion is pretty low on Microsoft ever since the Microsoft, SCO vs Open Source Linux issue. I think they employ extremely shocking tactics and they are an evil company. That is how I see them. Whether it is true or not, doesn't matter. What matters is that Microsoft is involved and now owning me in a different space. Who knows what they are doing with that data? If they can protect their source code for so long, so effectively, there is no saying what they do behind closed doors...

Even so, its not really about Facebook for me. Yes, regrettably Facebook were the first to implement this. It is about the communication aspect of it. It is about taking Social Networking to a new level, and not about how awesome the feature is. I do have to admit, I have some sense of admiration for how its been done from a technical prespective. I think it works great! I've said it many times before. I do not like Facebook. Like you, I build my network, but do so feeling almost bullied into it. Not by anyone in particular, but simply due to the fact that if I'm not there, I'm missing out on hooking up with my non-techy friends.

Dude, I feel your pain regarding your wife. Is he not contradicting himself? In the column he says:

“I have no objection to reading my Sunday Times on
the Internet because I know the content has been through the same
process as the print edition.”

Yet in the video he clearly states that he does not have to write facts or research facts as he is a columnist not a journalist. Bottom line, the old statement that says "Don't believe everything you read in the papers" does carry some weight!

Re: My new position at The Times

I do not think the Times (DB and all) realise what they have aquired... Imagine that was your child? Can you IMAGINE what it must feel like? I don't think there is ANYTHING worse in life than losing a child. Pure, pure hell on earth. Shit like this makes one wonder what future your kids have. The future you try to give them can be taken away in a flash by some dumbasses who play God. It is really upsetting.

Re: Is this the end of the Record label era?

This is certainly an interesting move. I know exactly how you feel as Ian was about 4 when he had to get grommets. He came through it without any side effects and today we're happy we did it as he would have stayed sick and in pain constantly if we had not done it. Sometimes you just have to do what you think is best and hope and trust all will be okay. Exact same!

We now cancelled the savings (day-to-day) side of the scheme and are only paying for hospitalization (which was much needed yesterday!).

Instead of paying the medical aid, we're paying it into a savings account instead. Each time we or the kids go to the doctor, we use that to pay for the visits and the meds. Works grand at the moment. At least everything is getting paid and there are no nasty surprises.
